Africans are infallible, god-like creatures? Really? REALLY?? Last I checked everyone, regardless of race, is allowed to be made fun of. To imply that the caricature of an African kid (which is accurate to say the least) is somehow deeply offensive on some level to an entire race is to reveal your own racial bias by exposing your want and need for the African to be exempt from criticism in every way, shape, and form. We're all people, and inherently flawed. Learn to laugh.. that is all.
hmm.. you're saying we're racist for being offended that you're laughing at an ignorant caricature that was created NOT by africans but by WHITE media holders.. and ever wonder why it is that its "accurate?" its called identity in america. we GAVE africans that identity you moron. read the book BLINK, its excellent at explaining the reasons for this
Identity is an absolute axiom. It's entirely possible that a person living in one part of the world can possess the same identity as someone living in another part. A=A, ever heard of that? Blacks have lived in America for a long time, and have been given plenty of opportunities to adapt themselves to suit their surroundings. Because a majority of them have failed to do so, with partial responsibility resting on the shoulders of idiot guilt-stricken whites, they have not moved an inch.
we are ALL products of our environment; it's just up to us on how react to and take in our environment. so what are the opportunities that we gave them since slavery for them to 'adapt themselves to suit their surroundings"? and how does Anybody NOT adapt to their surroundings; that is just my point. Our "opportunities" that we gave them are the very IDENTITIES, that they take in. TheOpportunities were us treating them as lower than us and "giving a helping hand" to pull them up in society.
The opportunities are: welfare, food stamps, section 8 housing, earned income tax credits, medicaid, affirmative action, school vouchers, Pell Grants, government subsidized student loans, government subsidized mortgages - the list goes on and on. Point is that black Americans should get on their knees and thank God that they live in the USA. No other country on Earth affords blacks the opportunities that we do in America.
its called retribution. and most of the things you mentioned are not opportunities for blacks, they are opportunities for the lower class. no african american should ever have to get on his/her knees to thank anyone for being brought to this country which was built on the backs of their ancestors. If anything we should be getting on our knees as white people and thank the african americans and their ancestors for building the country that only gives us white's opportunities
I pity your knowledge of history. Look up the etymology of the word "kidnapping", and your understanding of who built this country. Because you seem unwavering in writing YOUR opinions off as fact, conflating 18-19th century slavery with the building of a nation and so on, I'll clue you in a bit on who actually built this country: The answer is EVERYONE! Everyone from whites to asians to hispanics to blacks played a crucial role in the development of our nation.
you're absolutely right in that it was everyone, so we should get on our hands and knees and thank every culture of people for helping create america. No man specifically because of the color of his skin should get on his knees and thank anyone else for being treated as an equal. But I was originally explaining the roles that are given to races in anglo-america, by the white dominance, pointing out that the dominant culture of a society is who gets to shape the virtual reality of ethnic status
@FreedomFightersUnion I strongly disagree It was actually the fighting between themselves that got them to the craphole we call a country generation after generation getting worse and worse causing more crime and hate than any other race now im not saying white people havent done their fair share of stupid stuff but so far in the news and just about everywhere else everytime there is a robbery a murder gang activity so on Its done by african americans or to a lesser exten wanna be black people
look at factors that create crime and poverty. The "wanna be black people" you speak of, I'm guessing, are people of other races that are below the poverty line. Being in poverty, and having to be a "bad-ass" come hand in hand. Color has nothing to do with it, we all make independent decisions on how best to survive. To say white people as a whole make certain decisions, or black people as a whole make others is just plain prejudice, for you're misusing statistics, blaming social constructs.
@FreedomFightersUnion From the information youve it sounds to me like your either in a very good area with a low crime rate or you get all your information from seventh grade text books
@1337h4x0rm4573r hmm, well once again, your being quite prejudice. I live on Fillmore street of san francisco. Look it up if u want to. I have 3 projects within a 5 by 5 block radius. Cars get jacked every night; in fact our car got ran through the first day we moved in. The people I've seen do it to other people, were black. but you have to look up what the ethnic percentages under the poverty line are. A VERY high majority is black, so its likely that I'll only see black people in crime.
Speaking as an African American Female (sad that I have to actually announce that before posting this comment!)
First it's a g*d damn cartoon! Second this is a cartoon from 1941 we have obviously come a very long way since!! Shall we just get the Fcuk over it already. Focusing on the negatives in this clip only keeps the bullshit going ugh!!!
I just find the look disturbing. I'll admit, some of the gags in here are funny. But it was the fact that they threw out a big stereotype that had been used to ridicule African Americans at that time is what really angers people.
WHAT THE FUCK is this Shit!!!! this is so stereotypical, why the fuck they got the black dude on here with that white shit around his lips, who the hell is he suppose to be? the character off of dave chappelle show?? tyrone biggums!!!!!!??? so is he suppose to be on crack or something??!!!
you really should have a look back at the history of the Africans who were kidnapped & brought here and forced into labor in which they literally built the U.S. & its economy. It seems as if you don't realize that this is how they and their descendants were portrayed in Moving and Paper media. If you research, you will find it. Black face, Watermelon eating, Chicken chasing stereotypes. There are disgusting ignorant websites STILL around today that perpetuate such images. made during Jim Crow.
However, the character in this cartoon is not entirely slow. What shames it though in the end is Bugs Bunny walking away with the guy's clothes, and mocks him as he walks. The scene with the dice was too much. Black people have the right to express their feelings on this cartoon, because guess what? White people made Black people their bitch for as long as we can remember.
"White people made Black people their bitch for as long as we can remember" - look you crazy fucks that is not my generation or your generation, that didn't affect you and it wasn't me so what is your deal huh?
you weren't there niether was i which is what i am trying to get across to you people! talk to me about something i did not something someone else of another generation did then i'll take responsibility for race relations!
This is getting a little out of hand. First off, the cartoon, despite it being funny, DEFINITELY reeks of racism. First off, the Black fellow is the stereotypical pickaninny, a term that Southern white folk called Southern Black people. They are slow in mentalitly, they speak slow and in country (e.g., I done caught me a rabbit), and wear shabby clothes.
Thank you. Elmer Fudd was just as stupid as he is, so please let's just cut the bullshit. My black people, we are free!!! We don't have to go through this no more. We can watch this as a learning tool to see where we progress while laughing at the same time!
maybe they were trying to be politicaly correct and have a black character on the show but the only one that's not a rabbit or providing a service of somekind is the hunter( he's supposed to be stupid bugs is smart otherwise the hunter would kill the rabbit)
that has got to be the dumbest comment on the page. I know you know better than that, There was no political correctness during a time when the people they were stereotyping & ridiculing were not allowed to vote, hunted & lynched, restricted to the worse jobs, not allowed to marry who they wanted, not allowed to enter a restaurant for "whites only" not allowed to Drink from "White Fountains", beaten, raped by authorities with no legal recourse..AND YOU COME UP WITH POLITICAL CORRECTNESS.....??
this episode originated in 1942, and was "banned" prolly for the reasons you black people are crying about (as usual) ..back at the time of its creation people knew i t was a cartoon meant to make ppl laugh, now that all these black ppl are super sensistive like emo kids, u cant play anything with the slightest bit of "racial discrimination"..LAUGH..its a cartoon..i did
The "black" person is not black but is the typical "black face" characterization/caricature depiction of blacks by some whites in the early days. If you dont know what youre talking about then why argue? As I said in the other reply, you cant show the depiction without it being racist unless its in a pure discussion or something.
look i don't think you should be offended we are not from that time and it is us that is seeing this as just a black character in a bugs bunny cartoon now
i think you should give white people from that time some credit cause when this cartoon was done they were fighting against the nazi's and there oppression to the blacks the jews and the freeworld, if you are still offended by this cartoon well i didn't make it and the people who did probably wouldn't care anyway!
Ahhh who cares about the cry baby black folks who are always crying about everything.. EVERYTHING to them is racist it does not matter. They and everyone else can make fun of any other race, but the blacks can not take it. They cry and whine everything is racist.. Cry, cry, cry.. White people always having to powder their ass and pamper them to make sure they are not upset and crying...
Ok, so the part at the end was a wee bit racist, for the rest of the cartoon he's acting just like Elmer Fudd. It's funny with a white hunter but not a black one? Interesting. They could've used a different voice actor though...if he had talked much more I wouldn't have made it through *shivers*
I guess it could be considered as racist, but some people think the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was racist literature when Samuel Clemens was only trying to depict the realism of slavery on the Mississippi Delta.
If the hunter had not been drawn in an exaggerated racist stereotype with lips bigger than his head and not spoken in a fashion that depicted him as completely idiotic with the English language ( all of which were racist stereotypes at the time) it would have been equivalent to Elmer Fudd. Elmer Fudd was never portrayed as a stereotype of White Males..therefore Elmer Fudd could never have been a racist depiction because he was never created to be such.Some1 other than whites wld also hav2havmdit
The entire point of a cartoon is to exadurate the features of a charecter. Elmer Fudd's head was almost the same size as his body. His nose was huge. Have you ever heard anyone talk like him in real life? Of corse not. It's exaduration and it's one thing that cartoonists do. Fat Albert's lips were exadurated as well as other charecters on that show. Why didn't anyone yell "racist" with that show?
what? having a head bigger than your body and a big nose isnt a white stereo type. are you trying to say the big lips and how he talked, and ESPECIALLY playing CRAPS.. WASNT a racist black stereo type? you are rediculously cynic.. try looking at EVERY time warner bros had a black person on.. EVERY time its a horribly racist stereotype, usually depicting a monkey with huge lips eating watermellon rediculously fast or somethin of the like
Even though as an African American, I find this cartoon very disturbing, the black hunter sure has a better approach to hunting than Elmer Fudd. When Elmer sees Bugs he tells Bugs that he's hunting for a rabbit. Once the black hunter saw Bugs, he was already to shoot Bugs.
and while im on the subject whats wrong with stereotypes, every race has them and is made fun of but the blacks, oh lord that someone should say anything about them they should be protected!
I think this cartoon was done by Friz Freleng, who is notorious for ripping off other animators' gags, and his cartoons tend to be pretty boring or just sad. When Bob Clampett did "Coal Black," the characters at least had some dignity and were human, unlike this cartoon where the character is a blithering idiot. This cartoon is simply a racist piece of crap no matter how you look at it.
First of all, this film was directed by Tex Avery (who left WB around that time, hence no director credit). Secomd, Friz Freleng was the mentor of the directors who followed and one of Walt Disney's original associates...know what you're talking about before you open your big mouth!
I sincerely apologize for my comments. I'm aware Freleng was one of the earliest directors to define the post-Bosko Warner style. I'm biased against Freleng, favoring the wackier directors, which I should keep as my own personal opinion.
I saw Virgil Ross' credit, so I assumed Freleng directed, completely forgetting that Ross used to work for Avery and Jones before finally sticking with Freleng. Never assume.
Sorry for my spite about a cartoon I didn't even get my facts straight on.
I think I heard once that Tex did indeed direct it, but that it was ultimately completed by Clampett, as Tex had left before the completion of the cartoon, and Schlesinger ultimately took off the director's credit altogether. I *do* know that was the case with "Krazy Kruse," yet another travelogue spoof which ends with a then-timely WWII reference and a cool surprise.
That's because the exact same gag with the hollow log and the turning into a sucker was used in Bob Clampett's "The Big Snooze". In fact, it looks like all they did was take Elmer Fudd and make him a blackface characature in overalls. The animation is exactly the same! I'm pretty sure Bob Clampett came up with that gag first though.
Correction: This cartoon was done in 1941, and "Big Snooze" was made 1946, which obviously means Avery did the gag first. I shouldn't criticize anyone for stealing a gag though, because everyone stole gags back then, and people still do.
i dont see anything wrong with it. people like it because its timeless. i dont think its bad at all. glad i have all the tapes before they were pulled.
I didnt say anything about whether it was dated or not. Not sure im clear on the question? Obviously its old when it pertains to its humor. I meant timeless as in its a classic cartoon. You know, its been pulled from shelves, no longer airs on televsion. Not for sale. Its vintage.
Exactly. I'm a black woman, and I don't find this offensive to me at all. He's just Elmer Fudd with darker skin. I'm sick of these politically correct motherfuckers. White people were racist because they don't understand us, so they will perceived us that way, but please, let's just watch this in peace, and please, let's just get over it. This is only a cartoon, and I've seen worse. Lighten up, my brothers and sisters!!! This can be a learning tool!!!

Ok, I'm done now.

I swear I've seen this one on TV, and yet it's never been aired. ><

That's because the exact same gag with the hollow log and the turning into a sucker was used in Bob Clampett's "The Big Snooze". In fact, it looks like all they did was take Elmer Fudd and make him a blackface characature in overalls. The animation is exactly the same! I'm pretty sure Bob Clampett came up with that gag first though.
checkeredgeek 5 years ago
No, I mean the actual cartoon. It might've been off of a bootleg tape or something.
HolyDragonSword 5 years ago
Correction: This cartoon was done in 1941, and "Big Snooze" was made 1946, which obviously means Avery did the gag first. I shouldn't criticize anyone for stealing a gag though, because everyone stole gags back then, and people still do.

They break out into a game of freaking dice, and he's got lips so big he could open-mouth kiss a mule. That doesn't strike you as a little dated?
Arrowdodger 5 years ago
I didnt say anything about whether it was dated or not. Not sure im clear on the question? Obviously its old when it pertains to its humor. I meant timeless as in its a classic cartoon. You know, its been pulled from shelves, no longer airs on televsion. Not for sale. Its vintage.

you think this is racist, then you the racist!

You gotta admit that the dice part was a little much, though.

If it's so racist, then how come the hunter in this one is a bit smarter than Elmer Fudd?
Think about it.
NinjaGhostScorpion 3 years ago
