  • Going to have to look for this pedal on the old ebay. I use Boss Mega-distortion. It's cool for modern stuff, but I've always preferred the 80's sound.

  • Pedal sucks ass.

  • Heavy Marshall distortion works very well for blues if you use your volume control on your guitar, provided you're a Strat player.

  • less words , more action!

  • shit unusable review

  • One decidedly not metal band known for using this pedal is Radiohead, although I'm not sure if the still do

  • @khentoumi Yup. Mr. Greenwood definitely still uses it.

  • Just dug out my old Shredmaster, cracked it open, chased out the spider that had taken up residence and let rip.

This pedal is still my favourite, many many years after purchase.

  • actually, back then Metallica was indeed a Hair Metal band....technically so was Megadeth :-P Great Job!

  • Phailure365...you are a dick and I doubt that you really know what your talking about.

  • this pedal sounds like shit on all settings lol. amp distortion is usually better then pedals. just get a channel switcher

  • @Phailure365 you dont know shit about this, so shut the fuck up

  • @lairro69 iv forgotten more about gear then you ever knew so shut your goddamn mouth mother fucker you really this a little ass pedal is going to give you sould like a marshell stack? FUCK NO YOU INBRED CUNT

  • Is the Express 5:25 worth the dosh?

  • @xzibit2313, the word is IN-bred mr smart arse and its a review, he is supposed to talk to you about the pedal. you IN-bred :P

  • I've got a Shredmaster and it doesn't sound as good as this.

  • @dirtstyles can be your guitar.. or an active distorsion at the console

  • @dirtstyles can be your guitar.. or an active distortion at the console

  • i love this pedal ive got one and its something out of this world!!!

  • it don't sound that heavy to me i like the metal muff

  • good comparison putting them metallica fags in that bunch

  • is this a od or distorsion?

  • this pedal suck when you back up the gain or what? =(

  • would this pedal be good for a guns n' roses sound..if not what pedal would be the best for it..like the boss DS-1 with a keeley mod?

  • ...did he just call metallica hair metal?

  • @dbsk8r92 totally irrelevant

  • Justin is a fucking n00b

  • @Nyblingking you cant say that i mean just look at your user name!

  • @MeanGreenMovies Yeah, look at your dead mummy's rotten corpse.

  • @Nyblingking errr yeah, whatever that means

  • Comment removed

  • Dude, you're talking for nearly 4 minutes before a guitar sound's heard!

Please try to make shorter intros...

    Nice pedal though!

  • @corso1983 the more he talks the better, because if you dont talk enough there are always a tonne of questions in the comment bit, and believe me youtubers hate that!

  • Hi justin, thanx for all the tips & tricks you giving us and are these pedals still on the market?

  • this was the main distortion of jonny greenwood in radiohead early's days

  • SHUTUP.. and PLAY!!! >:(

  • The blues one is called the blues breaker

  • how about a little more playing and less talking?

  • If you want to play blues just turn down the gain, dummy. It's perfect for mid gain amps like the JCM 800 and it's QUIET, unlike Boss junk.

  • Great review, but at 7.08 > there is a "problem" that I sometimes have to, the "pulsing" lowfrequenzy. Do you or anybody else have any ideas for it? =)

  • i wish they still sold these

  • liked it most full contour and bass/treb 9 oclock.

  • I had one of these back in the day. must be 15+ years ago.

It was awesome. Much better than my mates boss distortion for the metallica stuff we used to play.

sounds strangely not as good as I remember now.

  • This pedal does sound horrid!? Thanks for the review, great review BTW. Nice unbiased description, nice playing. This pedal sounds like the intro to 90120! That thing should have a suck nob because it sucks! Thank god I didn't bother building this thing, I wanted to get that Radiohead crunch but I guess I'll just stick with a Muff clone.

  • Nope, jonny still uses it exclusively. In fact, jonny plays his tele to this pedal to a solid state fender deluxe 80 over 70% of the time.

  • @Ilovemyfender2 im pretty sure jonny uses an AC30 as his main amp...

  • @mistakendrummer Yeah it's the AC30 for cleans...but his dirt tone is a shredmaster into a deluxe 85.

  • @Ilovemyfender2 you're right. right after i replied i was looking at some of the things jonny uses in the in rainbows-live from the basement thing and saw that he was using another amp.

  • i have this pedal - agree it's a one trick pony. Doesn't sound much good except cranked up and then you lose all of the definition. I really doubt Johnny Greenwood uses this much anymore

  • This might be a heavey metal pedal but certainly not a one trick pony,, for example i know for a fact Jonny Greenwood from radiohead uses one as his main use of distortion.

  • As does Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine.

  • since when was stupid an appropriate description of sounds?

  • im sorry but there is no reason to spend 10 minutes explaining a pedal

  • I believe the pedal that has super seeded the shred master is the Marshall Jackhammer JH-1 pedal.

  • Johnny Grennwood and Thom Yorke use it, there thus, is the most awesome distortion pedal in the world, end of.....

  • the marshall drive master sounds like billie joe's drive

  • @jimboo94 I have the Drive Master, and I disagree. Green Day is actually my fave band, so take it from somebody who tried XD It's got a much thinner distortion. Now I think of it, it might have a little of the 39/smooth - Kerplunk sound. But it's still a good pedal!

  • Wow...I have one of those things lying around for years...never took much notice of it...but after seeing your review, I think I'm gonna take a second look at it! Thanks for the great review!! ;-)

  • So many words, so little sound.

  • goog for metal? yes it is, but it's an overdrive to my ears, not a distortion pedal. Awesome sound anyway

  • in the 80's metal wasnt like today...it was more like hard rock middle frequency distortions (and then came dimebag xD)

  • hell yeah :D

  • @destremie MD 2 is the worst pedal of the world and would never be on my pedalboard

  • I can hear that radioheadish distortion.

  • just bought one on ebay. its a awesome pedal!! relly unik!

  • 3:21

  • METALLICA AIN'T HAIR METAL! Ha ha

  • lol

  • It was

  • @Teutonic1250 they have hair

  • @Teutonic1250 hes not necessarily calling metallica hair metal, he just was naming names then said a few hair metal bands and commented on it.

  • radiohead uses this pedal too...

    well, that's what guitargeek says

  • nice review bro, but talk less dude hehe:P

  • which humbucker your telecaster has

  • i used to have this pedal i sold it when a bought a real tube amp , but now that i sold that too i miss this pedal a lot :(

  • what pedal could i buy now to nail the shreadmaster tone? Cus i can't find a shreadmaster or anything that matches this tone. Any ideas?

  • The Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde. The Jekyll side is a TS-808 clone, the Hyde side is a Shredmaster clone. Or, you could just buy the Son of Hyde, which is JUST the Hyde in a box by itself.

  • shredmaster? wheres the shredding then? he just played riffs! nice pedal though...i use a boss metal core 2, i think thats the one to beat at the moment.

  • Comment removed

  • nice carpet... :D thanks Justin

  • If you run all the EQ on the pedal at 50% or straight up go BACK to your amp and use the EQ on that to tailor your tone. Use the Gain and level only on theis pedal unless you want scooped sounds. Gobuy a mesa rectifier. But for my 1977 Marshall MKII N.M.V. 100 watt amp/cab matching I use the Shredmaster AND the MarshallBluesbreaker and I can turn them which wither one im using

  • i got one, its really cool

  • WTF??? This pedal is WAY more than just a one trick pony! I have even groked country tones from it.

  • I did own this pedal back then and unfortunately it wasn't too loud for my tastes but i didn't have the right equipment also, like a guitar with much attack. Nice review, reviews help sometimes

  • what a bunch of tools posting negative comments here - typical metal fucktards - all insults behind ur keyboard but face to face ur pussies!

  • I agree. Mids are our friend.

  • hahah dont listen to these noobs Justin, Great review

  • this is what jonny greenwood plays along with a RAT.

  • Fookin hell!, will you just get on with it?

  • is it true bypass?

  • no it's not

  • True bypass is--rather can--be a bit of shit. People have gotten on this true bypass or bust band wagon lately, and it's balls. Some pedals need it, some don't. I hear "click, hmm, click" a lot lately...

  • sounds shit

  • Woah! You can put a 9 volt in it?

    Just play.

  • Nice video. You can have a very nice sound with the gain set low if you adjust the treble/bass accordingly.

  • I used to have this way back in the 90s I was pretty dumb to buy it for Clash, Rancid and Toy Dolls covers... Absolute beauty for HEAVY sounds though.. Also, its is good to note that this thing is no use for CHEAP guitars( like what I had at the time) it will make you buzz like crazy.. since as you saw it doesn't do much without the gain cranked up.. It has solid construction one of the toughest pedals (and heaviest) everbuilt.

  • it def. has it's own vibe kinda remidns me of a Ratt

  • i dont know about you but it sound pretty decent to me. im thinking about getting its clone from byoc.

  • so much talking

  • sounds crappy. Maybe also turn up your amp volume too since you are using a tube amp. If the tubes arent able to sing the pedal will sound muffled.

  • 5:25 dude look it up

  • What about 5:25? more scooped but still sounds muddy as hell as opposed to other pedals I have and have tried for a Hard rock/ Heavy sound. And he does mention that the actual amp is not really loud. To get the best tone you have to crank the amp so that you get both preamp and poweramp clipping. Its called the sweet spot. and mixed with a pedal, the amp will sing. Thats my opinion on the Marshall Shredmaster.

  • no no no.... the amp is a mesa boogie 5:25 and its on 5 watts so its sounding fine because hes selected it on the 5 watts so you can crack it without annoying your neighbours

  • When was this pedal made and is it true bypass? just got one today for £10 :O (i know i was shocked too) BTW it sounds awesome

  • modified how?

  • Johnny Greenwood uses this right?

  • yeah, but his is modified, i forgot how though

  • know it all

  • sorry, its not modified, but he uses a BOSS volume pedal as a gain controller

  • Kevin Shields uses one.

  • Mmmmmmm. Yes he did.

  • johnny greenwood from radiohead also uses one

  • I am selling my shredmaster. If anyone is interested let me know. I'll ebay it for the transaction.

  • how much, man?

  • what has more gain-- the shredmaster or the drivemaster?

  • drive master has more gain...I think.....

  • wrong! the shredmaster has most gain, then drivemaster , then bluesbreaker. They all sound very very similar just different gain (ive owned all of them) the drivemaster is almost identical to the guvnor

  • You are wrong. That's what Marshall wanted you to believe. If you listen, it's rather obvious that the Drivemaster has more gain. The Shredmaster has way more bass and a very different midrange, though.

  • i owned a shred master. its been with me like 16 years now. made in england. its unbreakable.

  • great sounding pedal. i'll check one out. thought your were going to get choked up there towards the end reminiscing about back in the day. I think you miss shredding it up.

  • boy shut up you tool

  • cuuuul. now i know how johnny got his tone in 'the bends'. (Especially that first setting)

  • Also during the bends he used a boss sd1 to boost the shredmasted. (i.e. solo on Just)

  • For the Bends era, didn't Jonny Greenwood use proco turbo rat? I mean he always used shredmaster live but thought he used the rat for studio.

  • It's dificult to know what he used inside the studio. But on stage, he always used (and still use) a Marshall Shredmaster through a Fender 85 (a transistor amp) and a SD 1 for the less distorted part through his Vox AC-30 tube amp. It's what I believed but It's really hard to be sure... I got a Shredmaster and a Telecaster Plus so I alsmost have the same sound.

BTW, Thom Yorke used two turbo rat pedals.

  • Johnny Greenwood uses a ShredMaster.

  • I own a couple shredmasters and a couple Blues breakers 1st edition.which i run with all the correct gear. its what you surround these incredible pedals with. Why else would radiohead, my bloody valentone to John mayer use them and buy them all up! I get othing but compliment after compliment on my tones I AB-Y a couple Marhall amps

  • Actually , I own 2 1st EDITION 91' SHREDMASTERS and (2) 1ST ED 1991 Bluesbreakers.

Guitar instrumentals, fusion, heavy rock, alternative, to blues, pure funk and everything imaginitve style you can imagine. remember everyone you cant just go buy a mesa and plug a shredmaster into it. doesnt work. too mushy. unless you like that. I currently run 2 Marshalls one NMV and one MV , 1977 Mint JMP MKII PCB from ENG.100 watt with all NOS TUBES etc and a 1981 Marshall JCM800.

  • simple et éfficace

  • linkin park is nu metal?

  • yes

  • I know little about Nu Mental but it seems really hard to place bands in the genre. It seems to be a wide genre since Linkin Park, System Of A Down and Limp Bizkit are all included(?).

  • It's like, you sort good bands in heavy, thrash, black and stuff, and all those shit bands you mark as nu metal :D

  • Are you running this through the clean channel of your MESA 5:25 amp ?

  • Please do a review on your Mesa Boogie 5:25 Amplifier.

  • Great review man. I have never seen one of these guys floating around, but maybe Ill pick one up if I run across it at a pawn shop or something. Thanks!

  • less talk...more rock.

  • The only time I'd expect to hear the word 'trouser' is followed by the word 'trout'

  • bluesbraker, you mean. not bluesmaster.

  • Review some delay pedals!

  • One trick pony? Lets ask Jonny Greenwood and Kevin Shields about that ;)

  • lol... 'if we take the bass out it sounds a bit thin and stupid' :P

  • Ive played with this pedal once through a crappy behringer little-watt amp and the pedal made it sound positively fantastic :D

  • is this like the older version of the jackhammer? if so i think i like this better.

  • you had a little nostalgic moment towards the end :P

  • Hi Justin!! nice review!! I have one question.. the original chip of the shred Master is a Motorola?? in its circuit inside is written down Jim Marshall?? I don't know if my shred Master circuit is original.. I bought in second-hand, sorry my bad english!! thanks!

  • Justin that's some awesome sustain like you said!

  • how much wud this cost?

  • Currently £1.24 on Ebay.I am selling one,no reserve,current bid £1.24.I am Hurricanedisks,have a look!!!

  • :20-:21 lmaooooo

  • It's a good pedal for rock, good mid-gain pedal. Not quite the modern style but it's good if you play stuff with a lot of bass.

  • Sounds like deep purple towards the end.

  • from 9:00 to 9:04 sounds like deep purple to me, lol jk

  • I use the digitech deathmetal pedal

  • i was thinking about getting one...how well do they work?

  • Pretty good, but if you put it on a loud amp ur gonna need a noise gate cuz the gain is set to 11 and stays there so it makes some feedback. Otherwise i like it alot, sounds real thick, pinch harmonics scream, and basically it just has an EQ on it which gives a range of tone u want.

  • hm. that helps. thanks!

  • same here, I love the sound. it's perfect for playing fast/slow n heavy riffs you can get a range of sound like overclocked221 said. if you like death metal, metal core n such, it's a must have. personally I play Daath, Bloodbath, and Heaven Shall Burn on the pedal.

  • i have the peddal but the words shreed master is red

  • how much does it go for??

  • It sure is a pricey little beast, isn't it?

  • i have this pedal for 15 years now. still working and giving me the tone i want. genuine made in england. lasts a lifetime!!!

  • wtf is that thing at the end.

  • First setting sounded best

  • chugga chigga wugga.

    <3
