@PennyDreadful1 He is a higher bass, hence the title 'low baritone'. Basses are extremely low baritones, and Steele is kind of in-between a low baritone and a true bass (which still is an extremely low baritone voice).
This is an awesome mix. You guys hail from the range place forums right? Love the baritone highs. I'm nailing B4's these days. I want some pro help eventually.
@kurtmandos66 Not actually, Roy just sings his songs in a way that makes his notes sound higher and more impressive than they actually are. He has a fantastic voice.
@SimOneTube93 Remember that vocal range doesn't determine voice type.
High baritones and low tenors share some similar characterists but low tenors are lighter. Compare singers like Bruce Dickinson or Freddie Mercury to high baritones like Hansi Kürsch or Bono and you'll probably hear the difference.
@GoodGuitarSolos even i can. i can hit c6 in still good falsetto and e5-f5 in mixed voice but i'm kind of an high baritone. i start to use head voice at g4 but that peter steele is a low baritone... man, how did he do that? i'm 15 by the way, and i can't figure out how the fuck some people up there are 30, 40 or something and have more natural range than a 15 years old.
@soldatojoker85 They're better singers because they've been singing longer. The strongest weight lifters aren't 15 and neither are the strongest singers.
Tom Jones a high tenor??? Thinks there's something, no logic in your choice of voice type for these singers. Is it classical voice type or what kind of voice classification did you use?
@hed99bpb He has pretty dark timbre but he is definitely either regular baritone or high baritone. Low baritones (aka. basses) would be singers like Axl Rose, Ville Valo, Peter Steele and others.
@GoodGuitarSolos, that Jared Leto's A#s is nothing compared with the high note he reaches in the end of the song "Alibi", listen to that, it's like an explosion, it's really impressive.
I would contend that David Bowie, when he first recorded "Life on Mars?" in 1971, was a low tenor rather than a baritone. Both he and Sir Elton John were tenors in the '70's but became baritones as time passed.
@wpld88 IMO David Bowie's voice hasn't changed at all. Elton John was a low tenor during 70's, I agree, but his vocal nodule surgery changed his voice type to high baritone which he still is at the moment.
@connordrums Nope, he was a lower tenor who was able to go pretty low and high. His nodules and smoking made this baritonish sound during 80's but his voice was way too light and effortless up there in 70's and 90's for any kind of baritone. Just compare Mercury's voice to some high singing baritones like Axl Rose, Chris Cornell or Graham Bonnet and you will see the difference.
@GoodGuitarSolos I said you were right about James being a baritone since that song was from 2008. In the 80s he was a tenor. Like on the demo for The Four Horsemen when it was called The Mechanix. Even now he sounds close to being a tenor if you listen to the Sabbra Cadabra/ National Acrobat and Mercyful Fate covers.
And I was just joking about Dave because he does mostly high notes on the more popular songs like Holy Wars and Tornado of Souls for example. It's what he's known for vocaly.

@Rattlehead757 Steele has a low voice but high bass is almost same thing as low baritone, lower voice type than standard baritone.
You hear him as a tenor? I'm really surprised of it because his voice generally sounds like a higher baritone: he does have tenorish moments but also baritonish moments, and some of his singing in 'Jar of Flies' sounds just like baritone! Amazing singer, nonethless.
IN FACT, a High C is the Soprano C (C6) NOT a C5, musically speaking. For pop/rock music transcripts and lingo, many people call a Tenor C (C5) a "high C", for ease of use --most pop/rock music is sang in the tenor range--. But the term is used incorrectly. It is like writing "you're" instead of your, or "it's" instead of its. Just incorrect popular usage of something that used to be used correctly in the past.
I guess we'll not agree on what a tenor is. To me, if a guy can sing NATURALLY, CLEARLY AND STRONGLY an F2, he's a bass-baritone by birth, no matter if currently his highest is an E4 or an E6. Never in my life have I ever heard a pop/rock singer SING CLEARLY AND STRONGLY anything lower than a B2, Like Johnny Cash does. They just whisper/barely touch their lows. Now, I checked out this video because I read a comment that Brent Smith of Shinedown hits A#4s and C5s in "Devour" Pls tell me WHERE?
@GoodGuitarSolos I know a C5 is simply that: a C5. Some call it "High C" or "Tenor C" wrongly IMO, because that C is not "High" at all: an alto, soprano and above, sing that note fairly easily, and it isn't exclusive of tenors. It's simply a C above the "middle C" (C4). Thanks for the suggestions you sent to my mailbox, I HATE Bono although I think U2, without him, is a cool band. I'm just interested in what I asked you, please, WHERE EXACTLY does Brent Smith hit those A#4s and C5s in Devour?
@MsBibilinda Are you completely sure that you mean F2 and not F1? Because quite frankly, that would explain EVERYTHING about your post. I can think of plenty of rock singers who have sung MUCH lower than B2, and not all of them are necessarily bass-baritones by any means. Now if you mean B1, that's a very different story. There's actually still a few non-bass-baritones who have gone lower than that, but it's rare.
/watch?v=IZD8ffPwXRo at 1:20 demonstrates A1-A6...is that A2 the octave you mean?
You should put some of Don Henley's "Building the Perfect Beast" stuff on here. He hits D5s in the title track and "Man With A Mission". He sings an extended phrase on a C5 in the bridge of "Sunset Grill". That whole album is chock full of crazy high notes. In fact, most of the songs he sings sit really high in the male range.
@rideon77 He is amazing vocalist for sure! He isn't a standard tenor, that's for sure! He hits really high notes and has some really tenorish moments but his singing style is purely baritonish with all the strain and so on.
@maximan715 Cornell is insane, true! This video was to showcase these 'medium high notes' in A4-C5 zone, there is also a part of C5-E5, where things are getting higher and more difficult.
@Annonymus121 Nope. If you are hitting high notes, it doesn't matter if you're baritone or tenor. Tenors do have easier time singing up there but there are many baritones who can easily hit C5 and beyond like Axl Rose, Daltrey, Eric Adams etc. If baritone wants to hit highs, he just needs a good technique and breath support.
@bijeleudovice2 In popular music, the singers usually go much higher or lower without these opera standards. But yeah, he was one hell of a singer, overall very complete vocalist!
@bijeleudovice2 He is definitely a low tenor: His range is F2-F5 and he was like great example of true low tenor. During 80's he sounded like a baritone due the fact that he smoked tobacco cigarettes, which lowered his tessitura, but during the 90's his voice came back to where it was. I still love his 80's period most, though.
@MsBibilinda Nope, don't trust wikipedia on these things... Low tenor is basically a tenor with lower voice than standard tenor. Paul McCartney is a great example of low tenor, he can go down to baritone notes (even better than some of the baritones) but is still an angelic tenor with light tone and comfortabiltiy up there. He can also go up to C5 in chest easily even at this age! The range doesn't tell if the singer is a baritone or a tenor, it's the voice itself.
@GoodGuitarSolos How high you go doesn't matter, ANYONE can improve their upper range, but your lower range is determined by birth. It's not just Wikipedia, it is ANY MUSIC BOOK , it is my vocal coach, it is everybody who agrees on that.! Everybody in music knows a tenor starts on C3, NO MATTER HOW HIGH HE GOES, and a baritone starts on G2 NO MATTER HOW HIGH HE GOES. That's how you classify voices. If a person can sing as low as F2, his range is between bass and baritone NEVER a tenor.
David Cook seems like a standard tenor, he has really great chesty high notes in 5th octave in many of his performances! If you find something lower for him, feel free to message me, then he could be a low tenor too.
@Spydrfish I know Phil sound better in Down than he did in the mid 90s. But your saying some could have been on here? He could barley do Heresy on the live versions that came with the Cowboys From Hell rerelease. Can you tell me some of those songs? I beleave you, but I want to hear it for myself.
@cubby3o5 yeah, I noticed he sounds tired on the live disc with CFH, And I believe he was. I've seen a lot of live Pantera and down videos and it can be hit or miss, But lately he's been much better. Check out "bury me in smoke" from the download festival in 2009 he sounds great there, and 'Would" with Alice in chains from 2006 is also good. He never really nailed this Cemetery gates note live , he even mentioned having to do it a lot in the studio to get it right on the album.
@cubby3o5@cubby3o5 and I only say the Cemetery gates thing not to say he's bad, just cause if it can be here Studio Down moments could be. if you were asking for Good Down moments, On "Beneath the Tides" and "On March the Saints" from the latest album his voice sounds great, and on most of the album his voice is a bit less rough sounding than it was on the other ones.
@Spydrfish What live version of Cemetary Gates are you talking about. I heard one pre Cowboys From Hell perforemence that fits your description. Yeah I love Beneath the Tides. I heard it on a live video a few days ago.
@cubby3o5 Several, ones from various bootlegs from like 91 or 92, and the one from "Official Live 101 proof" he does hit the note technically but it's not like it is here, it's a lot more rough and strained sounding.
@GoodGuitarSolos yes it's true, if i upload some parts of songs of myself singing would you recognize what baritone type am i (dramatic, liryc, high im almost sure that i would be dramatic or lyric not high)? Thank you!
Quite the Variety here to say the least, Wham! and Slayer in the same video... Hah. There's a lot of stuff here that is Definitely Metal (Particularly the Thrash bands). that might could have had their own video. With these videos it's interesting to see people I had noticed some range in, but never thought I'd see in a video like this, Some of the people have gotten higher than the clips here but that's not really the point. Another good video.

@raucho He is low tenor, really skilled vocalist! Sadly he has lost some of his voice, but it's regaining back slowly!
