I could never just throw my dead chickens in the trash; they mean too much to me. I usually bury mine in or around my chicken pen, albeit without a coffin. I've also taken to cremation, since we live on five acres with scads of trees; cremating my dead chickens and scattering their ashes around the chicken yard is a nice, symbolic gesture, like my chickens are forever part of their land and their home.

The wire floor does not help the chicks in their first moments after hatching! In nature, they would have hay, grass, something soft, which mama prepares for her chicks. That may have contributed to the chicks death!

My turkey just recovered from a serious bout of avian pox. I hand fed it for almost a month and i dont think im going to have im for dinner anymore. Its very easy to get attached to them as theyre very endearing animals. Its advisable to medicate them with viral drops (in the drinking water) off and on to avoid some of the more fatal diseases. And yes avoid dampness and keep them off the ground at night. When i get my chickens, ill have to try not to get too attached. Duh.

i dont know if turkeys are closely related to ducks in anyway , but if you hold a duck upside down long enough it will die. thats what happened with my poor duck when it fell over and couldnt get back up.
