@FlakMonky20k Because Atlanta was such an easy track to drive with its sweeping banks that a lot of cars could run well there and thus we'd have great racing. I wasn't a fan when the Old Atlanta was around but I can tell it was better than the Quad Oval they have now.
I know 93 and 94 was bad seasons for the moral of the sport. HOwever, Longlake, I could say the same thing what you said and compare it to the 1995 & 2000 seasons. Jeff Gordon struggled the last few races in '95 only to beat Earnhardt by a meer 35 something points and Dale even won the last race of those seasons to prove that he was in contention to win the title. In 2000 Bobby Labonte beat out ol #3, yet people say that dale was done and should retire...ha how i laughed at those critics!
yeah i remember when he wrecked...his season was just miserable. Having to finish 12th in the points, only one win (the coca-cola 600), and wasn't much of a contender thur out the season. But 1993 was a different story & 94 was a different story...
1993 was one of the worse seasons in Nascar with Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison dying due to their plane and helicopter crashes. Davey could have easily won the championship that year as he was only a few points behind Earnhardt prior to tht July Talladega race. As to 1994, Ernie Irvan was only a few points behind Earnhardt before his near fatal practice crash that ground his season to a halt prior to the August MIS race. minus those events, Earnhardt would not have won in both 1993 and 1994.
Are you kidding? Dale Earnhardt led the entire season in 1993. His only competition was Rusty Wallace. Whether Davey or Alan lived or died had nothing to do with the championship that year.
In 1994 when Ernie was hurt Dale Earnhardt was leading the points by about 60. Would it have been a close battle in 1994? Yes, but I wouldn't have bet against Dale.
Davey would have cleaned Earnhardt's clock in 1994 had he not died the previous year, and he wouldn't have crashed so hard if at all at MIS in practice as Irvan did as he had much more car control then Ernie. 1994 was a huge Ford year, they won 20 some races and Davey would have won in a walk over Earnhardt. He should have won it in 1992, had Waltrip not crashed him out at the second Pocono race. Davey would have been a 2-3 time Champion easy had he not died.
if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we would all have a Merry Christmas all the time. Davey never was consistent enough to win the title. Dale beat him in '91 and he would have beat him any other time, too.
And you know this how? Shit happens, buddy. Looked what happened to Dale. I could easily say Dale would have won the title in 2001 had he not died. He did finish 2nd in 2000. And Harvick did pretty good in his car in 2001.

And that's why 1992 was one one of my favorite seasons in NASCAR. One cheap win at the Coca-Cola 600 (he was speeding down pit lane and the officials turned a blind eye) and Davey, Bill, Alan, Mark and Harry all championship contenders at the last 1992 race at Atlanta. I had had enough of Dale Earnhardt's dirty driving tactics and had stop watching NASCAR prior to this season.
really? ditzy driving? well my friend, nascar was different back then. back then, nascar was enjoyable to watch and not many fuckin rules. now, its shity.
He was not speeding. Irvan and Kyle was way to conservative going down pit road, and Earnhardt with more experience got the most he could without going over the speed limit. He came out first and they couldn't catch him, although Ernie about did. Boo-fucking-hoo!
this was Richard Petty's last race

It's a mystery why he struggled in this specific year- he sandwiched it around two repeats.

Earnhardt would make up for his poor 1992- won the 1993 and 1994 titles and nearly caught Gordon from way behind in 1995.

It's hard to recognize this version of the track in Atlanta - I thought it was darlington for a minute.
