I am sorry if you've already answered this question but when doing free lance work, is there a way to sanitize things like eye shadows and blushes that you are dipping into after having touched the clients face with whatever tool you may be using as an applicator or is this not a huge hygiene issue?
hey, i'm from canada, and found that promakeupshop is in europe (i think/i'm pretty sure. do you know any more local options that there might be for me? thanks :)
Nicola! I think you and Sam are just such Dolls! I'm just starting my career as a make up artist and I'm so thankful that you both share your wisdom with us! xo all my best! - Julie
I love you too,LOL! I am new to the Chanel and so far you too are the only Makeup Artist that stress makeup hygiene. Very important for a inspiring makeup artist like myself. Keep up the good work.
I'm currently studying costume for theatre and I want to do some stage makeup, I'm comfortable with the techniques and hygiene regarding pressed products.
I get that you can scrape concealer and foundation, lip products out on to a dish but what do you do with regard to pressed cosmetics?
Do you scrape off some? Or do you clean it off after?
thanks for this nic, i found it really useful. just a quick question - i understand the need for disposable applicators for hygience purporses BUT the thing i dont get is that your dipping the wand/eyeshadow into a mascara/palette that youve already used b4 on other people (yeah?) or do u get brand new ones each time or? like if my frends come over and we want to do make up on eachother and i dont want to mix germs but i dont want to go out and buy all this stuff i just want to use what ive got?
does this mean that spending a ton of money on professional brushes like MAC doesn't account for anything on the field, ie. you don't get to use them even if you disinfect them before going out on a job?
@dawntwist The disposable brushes are for people who have cold sores/rashes/etc. - basically, something you REALLY don't want to get on your expensive brushes. Professional brushes are fine to use on people who don't have communicable skin diseases. Disposable mascara wands are always necessary, though, because eye fluid can transfer diseases that aren't readily noticeable.
Just rummaging threw your video, and found this ! One your makeup and hair is just stunning ! Very helpful video but I was wondering if you would be able to do a video talking more about the life span of makeup and when to throw things away and how to preserve makeup :) In the case that you do have a video about that and I missed it would you point me in the direction please ?
Hi guys, I was wondering if you could do an updated hygiene video? Is Mac still your favorite brush cleaner? Do you sanitize your cream products (blush, etc) after use? (Mine are getting a bit gunky and not sure what to do.)
Let's say you're doing a runway show and you want to use the same tube of mascara on all the girl. do you use different mascara wand for each dip? (what i mean is if you want to apply three coats of mascara on one model would you dip the wand into the tube of mascara three times or would you dip it once, then toss the mascara wand, and get another one?)
@nikisayschill hey i'm not sure if you got a response from one of the girls on your question about mascara and disposable sticks...the answer is yes you would have to use a new mascara wand for each dip because if you dipped the same wand back in you are spreading any germs or bacteria into the whole tube of mascara. It doesn't matter if its one person or five. Hope this helps
I understand about using disposable mascara wands, but what about foundation brushes and powder brushes? Could you just clean/disinfect them after you've used them on a client and then use them again? Or are they only good for personal use?
I have alot of your tutorials in my favorites. My mother passed away almost four months ago and I got realy depressed. These tutorials have been a real pick me up! They're really brilliant! I've started using makeup again because of them! Thanks!
What about mascara? What if you dab a disposable mascara wand in the tube but need more? Do you use a new wand or just make sure you get a lot of product on the wand the first time?
i have had my makeup done at makeup and after they finish ur makeup they ask u to choose 3 items that i want which i thought was cool but i was young at the time i didnt know anything about the brushes so she gave me the lipstick she used on me the lipgloss and pressed powder i thought that was cool now i know if i let tthem do makeup looks on me to collect more brushes lol
A Question for All Makeup Artists: How do you keep your pressed eyeshadows hygenic? Because sometimes people get eyeshadow with a brush, place it on the eye and thn re dip the brush in the eyeshadow, wouldn't that transfer bacteria or do makeup artists do something special?
I'm just asking because I'm a bit of a germophobe and got conjunctivits from my makeup not that long ago and I basically had to throw all my eye makeup out . So I'm looking at getting some more, but want it hygenic.
what i do is take a artist palette and with a lil scraper . put a lil of the product into one of the holes and then use a throw away eyeshadow brush to do the persons eye. and just use a new throw away brush and slot for a new person it keeps it all clean
gossmakeup artist did a video on this. their are special sprays you can purchase, or you can simply do a light spray of isopropyl alcohol over the top of a palette to disinfect it.
powder products don't tend to spread bacteria like cream products do, this is why they have a much longer shelf life. With powder eyeshadows and blushers you can simply remove the top layer of the powder after use to prevent bacterial growth.
The thing with using chemicals on brushes, not specifically designed for that purpose, is that brushes, even synthetic, by design or by fiber-morphology, have porous parts. The can absorb chemicals and irritate your skin.
i need to know a great way of taking wipes, makeup, brushes, lashes, lipstick-basically a great way to travel with my kit. when i ordered my kit from capital it was fine but now that i add to it all the time i seem to have no space and cant stay organised!! very frustrating. any tips????? PLEASE get back to me!xxxxxx THANK YOU!
i would love it if you guys could do a video of how you take off all this makeup. specially when using good coverage products or heavy eye shadow, waterproof mascara, eye lashes glue. i always pull my skin trying to take it all off and end up with my face sored and red and never clean enough. ive heard about vaseline and baby oil some mua's use but im not sure about it, specially when oily skin. what you guys recommend?
i use clean and clear.. the everyday wash thingi.. the blue one.. and then.. put baby oil on ur face and wipe it with cotton.. gently.. and then when all ur makeup is gone moistorize with vasline.. i do that for years now.. my skin is amazing.. always use vasline and baby oil their the best.. !
2.double cleanse with a foaming wash (suitable for oily skin types),
3.tone and
4. moisturise with a light milky moisturiser which has high water to oil ratio-again, suited to oily skin types.
remember ro rub gently in circular upward motion to increase circulation which will also remove any traces of make up. Use damp cotton pads with eye make up remover on them to remove eye and lip make up
I just subscribed to your channel. Both you and the other girl ( i guess she's your sister, i just started watching you guys so i don't know too much about it) are GORGEOUS, perfect bone structures, perfect eyes, perfect skin, sexy cheekbones and lips. And you are bloody talented. Love you!

can you and your sister do a video on your skin care regime. You both have flawless skin and since you both are quite knowledgable on what is out on the market can you tell us what works for you. Thanks
Oh my, I love your new haircut, it's quite amazing. And, your makeup is gorgeous. have youd one a tutorial on it? or will you? because it's absolutely stunning.
Everytime i do someone i just go to superdrug and get the cosmo travel set- they sell the here for 49c a brush so i grab a few and the customer gets to keep them! i duno thats just me!
the whole point of the disposable mascara wand is that you are only going to use it once right? so do you find yourself using 2 or more mascara wands per person so as not to dip the wand in twice?
I never understood the reasoning using a separate makeup wand because if you're sticking the makeup wand back in the mascara after you touch their eye, your putting those germs back into the mascara. Then if you use another makeup wand on someone else your still getting those same germs out of the mascara so why not just use the same brush? :) I've just never understood the logic, I guess. Unless you just never stick the want back in there and use a different one each time you put it in?
Great advice. I think maybe one could use those all the time-or at least to have another set while one is drying! And I love your accent, hair and makeup!!!
sidenote: you're haircut is amazing...each time i see it it looks better and better....i'm sooo tempted to get a cut very similiar. and i'm scared of short hair! lol....
Hi, I use MAC's brush cleaner but I decided to give my brushes a deep clean and washed them with a conditioning shampoo and then partially and gently patted them dryand left them in a warm room. Is this OK and the done thing to do? Thanks :)
Great video! I think many are interested to see how make-up artists disinfect their stash...I 'm super amateur (just starting to handle my own makeup :P), but I was wondering...isn't it more difficult to use these disposable brushes, for example these mini blusher brushes instead of the fluffier 129-type blusher brushes? Do they produce the same effect?
You dont have to use them unless a client has a contraindication but you absolutely must have a set in your kit just in case. A good make-up artist can do brilliant make-up with their fingers so to use these brushes is a cinch.
thank you for this great tutorial, your tips are very helpful. I actually was going to ask you if you always use them or not and your latest comment was the answer to my question :) By the way, the others who commented are right, your hairstyle is really cool!
can you Please do a video on how you style your hair!!?!! i'm sure i'm correct in saying we all love your new hairstyle to bits, and want to know more about it!
i love ur hair, makeup, everything but i love u for posting this. my main problem with the regular sized mascara disposable wands were that they come in this one size...when mainly u buy a mascara because of the effect of the brush....so having thos disposables usualy defeated the purpose but thanks so much for introducing me to this site because of the many choices they have!! THANKS

Thank you very much for your video, but I have two questions:
1) How often do you clean your brushes and how do you clean them during a show, where you probably have to do the make - up very fast?
2) I noticed that you have your own brushes but do you have the same in the kid? Do one have to buy every favourite brush twice?
Thank you very very much, your so helpful!

A Question for All Makeup Artists: How do you keep your pressed eyeshadows hygenic? Because sometimes people get eyeshadow with a brush, place it on the eye and thn re dip the brush in the eyeshadow, wouldn't that transfer bacteria or do makeup artists do something special?

guitarrasara 2 years ago 3
Thanks!
Givemetetris 2 years ago
You can wipe each shadow with a clean tissue; you are basically removing the surface layer.
You can also lightly spray each one with isopropyl alcohol, aim for 70%or higher so that it will dry quickly.

powder products don't tend to spread bacteria like cream products do, this is why they have a much longer shelf life. With powder eyeshadows and blushers you can simply remove the top layer of the powder after use to prevent bacterial growth.

the whole point of the disposable mascara wand is that you are only going to use it once right? so do you find yourself using 2 or more mascara wands per person so as not to dip the wand in twice?

woah! that's some bright shade on ur eyes! wicked :)

Unless you just never stick the want back in there and use a different one each time you put it in?
guitargirlae 2 years ago
You are only supposed to use them once that is why they are disposable. You never double dip!
pixiwoo 2 years ago
You actually never double dip the mascara wand. So for each person you use two disposable mascara wands - one for each eye.
MUpNorth 2 years ago
Your last idea is correct. They don't put the used want back in if they need more, they throw that one out and get a totally new one.

Great advice. I think maybe one could use those all the time-or at least to have another set while one is drying! And I love your accent, hair and makeup!!!

Can you do a video on how to wash makeup brushes and what products should be used to clean them....?
n6611 2 years ago
Hi, I use MAC's brush cleaner but I decided to give my brushes a deep clean and washed them with a conditioning shampoo and then partially and gently patted them dryand left them in a warm room. Is this OK and the done thing to do? Thanks :)

shanti1983prya 2 years ago
Great video! I think many are interested to see how make-up artists disinfect their stash...I 'm super amateur (just starting to handle my own makeup :P), but I was wondering...isn't it more difficult to use these disposable brushes, for example these mini blusher brushes instead of the fluffier 129-type blusher brushes? Do they produce the same effect?
tinambc 2 years ago
You dont have to use them unless a client has a contraindication but you absolutely must have a set in your kit just in case. A good make-up artist can do brilliant make-up with their fingers so to use these brushes is a cinch.
pixiwoo 2 years ago
thank you for this great tutorial, your tips are very helpful. I actually was going to ask you if you always use them or not and your latest comment was the answer to my question :) By the way, the others who commented are right, your hairstyle is really cool!

Their is not much you can do with powder products but as long as the client see's you wipe over it with a tissue you should be fine xx

i love ur hair, makeup, everything but i love u for posting this. my main problem with the regular sized mascara disposable wands were that they come in this one size...when mainly u buy a mascara because of the effect of the brush....so having thos disposables usualy defeated the purpose but thanks so much for introducing me to this site because of the many choices they have!! THANKS
jcanangel 2 years ago
did you style your hair like that? or is it really that length? =)
