Last time I got high I was scared shitless. Must be a necromancer nearby. Either that or I'm having LSD flashbacks when I smoke, which is entirely a possibility when you consider all the trips I brought on by smoking a joint 30 minutes after dropping a hit of acid.
I remember being 13 years old back in 1978 and playing this on my portable casete player , going as loud as it could go . with that solo at the end just lifting my spirits . making me want to spread the word to other people . at the time alot of people saw them as a led zeppelin clone . not as good as zeppelin . and they probably thought the same thing . i love both bands . as well as every other great band of the day . but Rush are the only band to get better with age .
motorcycleboy.... I think you mean to say that there is some other song that reminds you of this song. I'm sure that a great many musicians have been influenced by this unique and innovative masterpiece.
@themotorcycleboy17 Teenage Wasteland by The Who. "Out here in the fields, I work for my meals" Yep, same chord progression. ROFL Happens all the time, chord progressions by themselves cannot be copyrighted. Pachelbel's Cannon a baroque piece is a great example of this. Countless songs use that same chord progression. Look up "pachelbel rant" here on youtube, enjoy!
Im an American whos spent the last 15 years of his life living in Canada (my wife's Canadian)....I was a Rush fan before but since living here Ive become a way bigger Rush fan than before. I saw them back in the eighties, recently I saw them In Vancouver and auburn Washington. The band is incredible regardless if ive been surrounded by Canadians for almost 20 years. More or less the best power trio of all time!!!
@LuigieatsBabies I hear you, especially in 1975, Rush gets recognition from workin man, fly by night, then caress of steel comes out, Rush's most proud album at the time becomes a flop because people dont get it? I dont get people? Telling Rush to sound more like bad company? lol! Nothin against bad company but lets cut the crap!.. Rush's music from 74 til 81 is epic, bad companys no where near the power and beauty. in a final flash of glory the Rush' epic'ness comes to an end in 81,
@dannyhood66 Actually Danny, they have more fans now than they ever had - I think they are more epic then they ever have been. I suspect you prefer the Terry Brown years, and I can understand that. But you cannot say that their 'epicness ends'. Every album they have ever made, although different sounding, has the highest level of muscianship. They have been epic in every genre of music they have ever produced. You just don't like it all. But I do.
@dannyhood66 As well All The World's A Stage.is bye far the turning point in their career as well That album has the Proffesor on the drum kit live,Working Man.Beyond legend this band is the solo of three who still remain. To this day some 40 years As A Canadian this band can really start a party EHHHHH
As a dedicated rush fan...I seriously think this was some of their best work....too bad critics were so hard on the boys.....they deserve the best ratings...always and forever!
As a dedicated rush fan...I seriously think this was some of their best work....too bad critics were so hard on the boys.....they deserve the best ratings...always and forever!
Ever heard of a metaphor?? Or if you actually attain yourself to definitions, have you ever heard of a conjecture?? You're such an illiterate cretin. Get that one?? Or do you actually think I assume you don't know how to read and write?? Do you think you can judge me based on a single "snide" quotation from one of my previous comments??
Give me a break. Everybody else understood what I actually meant, otherwise my other comment wouldn't have any thumbs up, would it??
Only Rush could ever create something like By-Tor & The Snow Dog and perform it, and then have the audacity to create a sequel to it that is equally as amazing, diverse, AND 4 minutes longer! haha
I agree, "Beyond The Lighted Stage" might well be one of the Best documentaries ever done on a Band!
Major Props to the Boys for never compromising their musical integrity during the bleak years of 1975-1976. WE'RE all the better for them staying true to themselves!!
@NS9144 I totally agree that they paved their own way by not compromising during the '75-'76 era. Their attitude before releasing 2112 was we're either going out in a ball of flames on our own terms or this album concept will catch on and it will be so successful that we'll write our own ticket for now on. Thank god Rush had balls ! After the success of 2112 , they were untouchable toward any record company having any control of them ! And that's what makes Rush , Rush !
I saw "Beyond The Lighted Stage" again the other night and if you haven't seen it ,do yourself a favor, take a little time out and watch it. The documentary that Alex , Geddy , and Neil give about the making of "Caress of Steel is phenomenal !
their was a time when great bards sang the tales of heroes and villians.these men were but in their musical infancy, and yet they wrote and played with all they had.it was more than enough to show us all they were and are truely......mystical bards one and all. i loved it.
@LegoBricKing ok your excused , now pay attention, Geddy's Rickenbacker , and an effects pedal (probably phaser) is being used to create that sound by scraping a pick up and down the E string , it's called an overdub , like the voice on telling the story that's an overdub also.-- i.e.- recorded sound on a separate track , edit in while cutting the album.
One thing to point out. I love how part 1 and part 2 almost have the same amount of views. Shows how attached you get and how they are such a cult band.
@s0undch4ser : Like you, when I 1st heard Rush, I though Geddy used a pick. Never could figure out how he got that plunky pick tone using fingers. Until recently, I was watching a Rush concert on TV, I realized that Geddy would often strum a string w/ his index finger. Perhaps on the back stroke his finger nail contact on the string is what gave that "pick tone". Also; Maybe on rare occasion he did use a pick sometimes in the studio?? I suspect this has puzzled many bassists for years.
If I've said once I'll say it again , The R&R Hall of Shame sucks and they are NOT worthy of RUSH ! If anyone who watches That Metal Show , Eddie Trump goes off on the Hall of Shame with this issue and calls them every name in the book . He then stands up , flips them the bird with both hands , and says kiss my ass ! And I have to say that I fully agree with him ! All I know is that Rush is in my Hall of Fame !
Prince By-Tor ,Knight of darkness ,was defeated by Snow Dog and retreated into hell. The Necromancer takes By-Tor captive and locks him away ,after long years he breaks free of the Necromancer spell and thus slays his enemy and becomes the hero.?
I've always loved this song but the storys confusing , Snow Dog put his ass on the line to save the Overworld from By-Tor. Was By-Tor simply a good guy who was always under the control of the Necromancer?
The album is still one of my favorites and this song is a pinnacle.
Not a bad song on the album. It never got the notoriety of Fly By Night and since they were released so close together obviously Lakeside park made a more appealing to the masses less than epic song (still good)
i'm serious about the tambourine, it makes rock, boogies shake, things rock. perhaps you lacked the time machine 2010 that futureland disallowed tambourine mans mister.
@jeffsdolphin yeah idk why this was not one of their more popular albums... the guitar work is amazing. I like how you can hear the 3 individual instruments during his solo...its simple(sorta) and epic!! like how theres no overdubs or anything
@jeffsdolphin hey im a kid lol. I agree their 70s work is where its at. I'd have to say my favorite 70s album would have to be a tie.................................. between all of em ;D
I'm a 17 year old Rush fan and I love this song. Its definitely in my top ten. But I have to agree that the critics bashed this song and album. I watched beyond the lighted stage, and they show what some of the critics said about their first works in general. I would seriously kill the critics who wrote those things. 8)
@naal13 dont kill anybody for christ sake.....this is really early ...im damn impressed wit -ya!!!!!!!! hemispheres has been in my car tapedeck for 4 months. (a huge recording task ..way out on a farm) heard it was really a huge huge, diffficult ordeal .2112 always is #1
@naal13 good for you kiddo im 41 and you've got your head totally screwed on its the original masterstroke work that rush created and if you appreciate caress of steel you you have connected with the band and there music.................keep rockin dude and all true Rush fans
@naal13 You better watch what you write. It's just music. Anyone who would take somebody's life over what they said or thought about some music is just like that piece of shit who murdered Dimebag.
and anyone who thinks that I actually meant what I said in my other comment must have some kind of mental retardation. Do you really think I would kill someone over a song?? I dream of becoming a doctor, so I would never even consider killing someone, seeing as I'm working my ass off trying to get into med school so that I can save lives. So why don't you watch what you write, before you offend people you don't even know?
@naal13 Where are all the critics that trashed Rush now? Probably unemployed or writing blogs for nothing. Rush? Still touring, making $ and the envy of every band out there. I want too see that justin beaver kid in 36 years(if he doesnt die of an OD when his 15 minutes are over)
don't be such a troll. I merely mentioned my age because, nowadays, its incredibly common to see people who are 17-18 listening to crappy mainstream music with banal content, if any.
@PhilTheMetalhead I'll agree with you up to about Moving Pictures or Signals. I have a hard time with a lot of it after '81 or '82. Even my 15 yr-old loves older Rush. Awesome band to this day!
the closing to "the necromancer" has a joyous tone, this is a champion's anthem; when he defeats his evil demonic foe. this isn't just rock n' roll... it's poetry even tolkien would be proud of!
@quidnick Ask Christopher Lee and the fellowship of the cast. (LOTR). Rush also reminds me of 'an emissary from the mists like a ghost of Tolkien on the set',( Viggo Mortensen). See 2941 3rd age. The white council drove the Necromancer out of Dol Guldur. Don't forsake Rivendell either.
@quidnick Yes, one of the great strengths of Rush is the total lack of defeatism and spiritual exhaustion in their music. The other night I had occasion to listen to The Smiths, and then to Rush. The contrast couldn't have been more stark. The Smiths: nauseating.
If anyone here is looking for new bands that are similar, soft, high pitched male force, strong powerful guitar, and extremely talented drummer to match, not to mention the telling of an amazing story, I suggest looking at Coheed and Cambria.
@KlydeShal and the mars volta. but not all mars volta, you have to listen to like 3 full albums before properly judging them, and 2 of those 3 have to be octahedron an deloused in the comatorium. and led zeppelin obviously
love how they break shit down .plus they have alot of change ups so progresssive.alex plays the last lead with so much feeling.peace and long live the legend of this band.

prob my all time favorite RUSH song.....evevything about this song is perfect, from lead and bass guitars to drum and vocals.I even got to see RUSH play it wayyyyy back in the 1970's when it was first released
This is music. Rush is undoubtedly one of the best bands to ever exist. So innovative and different from everyone else. No other band can even come close. Basically, THEY FUCKING KICK ASS!!!!
@silverstein834yo As much as I respect your enthusiasm for this band, and I too loved RUSH more than any other band in my youth, it is said that RUSH had borrowed it's style from BUDGIE. a 60s/70s welsh rock band. try looking them up if you don't know them (Though Im sure you do). Geddy even looks like their singer and RUSH says BUDGIE and Zepplin was who inspired him and you can tell their is an element from both bands. But RUSH is still badass.
????... they are anti-establishment. keep trying though. they are the band that others will say, "when music lost it's way every few years, they never did... Rush" peace
Last time I got high I was scared shitless. Must be a necromancer nearby. Either that or I'm having LSD flashbacks when I smoke, which is entirely a possibility when you consider all the trips I brought on by smoking a joint 30 minutes after dropping a hit of acid.

and anyone who thinks that I actually meant what I said in my other comment must have some kind of mental retardation. Do you really think I would kill someone over a song?? I dream of becoming a doctor, so I would never even consider killing someone, seeing as I'm working my ass off trying to get into med school so that I can save lives. So why don't you watch what you write, before you offend people you don't even know?
naal13 6 months ago
@naal13 Where are all the critics that trashed Rush now? Probably unemployed or writing blogs for nothing. Rush? Still touring, making $ and the envy of every band out there. I want too see that justin beaver kid in 36 years(if he doesnt die of an OD when his 15 minutes are over)

no one cares about your age.
metroidorx 5 months ago
@metroidorx
don't be such a troll.

Awesome band to this day!

the closing to "the necromancer" has a joyous tone, this is a champion's anthem; when he defeats his evil demonic foe. this isn't just rock n' roll... it's poetry even tolkien would be proud of!
quidnick 1 year ago 13
@quidnick Ask Christopher Lee and the fellowship of the cast. (LOTR). Rush also reminds me of 'an emissary from the mists like a ghost of Tolkien on the set',( Viggo Mortensen). See 2941 3rd age. The white council drove the Necromancer out of Dol Guldur. Don't forsake Rivendell either.
lakesider3 1 year ago
@quidnick Yes, one of the great strengths of Rush is the total lack of defeatism and spiritual exhaustion in their music. The other night I had occasion to listen to The Smiths, and then to Rush. The contrast couldn't have been more stark. The Smiths: nauseating.

If anyone here is looking for new bands that are similar, soft, high pitched male force, strong powerful guitar, and extremely talented drummer to match, not to mention the telling of an amazing story, I suggest looking at Coheed and Cambria.
I"m now a fan of both bands.
KlydeShal 1 year ago
@KlydeShal and the mars volta. but not all mars volta, you have to listen to like 3 full albums before properly judging them, and 2 of those 3 have to be octahedron an deloused in the comatorium. and led zeppelin obviously

This is music. Rush is undoubtedly one of the best bands to ever exist. So innovative and different from everyone else. No other band can even come close. Basically, THEY FUCKING KICK ASS!!!!
silverstein834yo 2 years ago 29
@silverstein834yo As much as I respect your enthusiasm for this band, and I too loved RUSH more than any other band in my youth, it is said that RUSH had borrowed it's style from BUDGIE. a 60s/70s welsh rock band. try looking them up if you don't know them (Though Im sure you do). Geddy even looks like their singer and RUSH says BUDGIE and Zepplin was who inspired him and you can tell their is an element from both bands. But RUSH is still badass.
