Some people are getting really defensive and aggressive about this. That suggests a perception that they need to justify their gaming habits. He doesn't say that ALL MMO players are addicted, or that the games themselves are bad. What he is saying, is that the developers use similar game design methods to those who develop gambling devices.
Ask yourself this 'Am I playing 2-3 hours a day because I enjoy it, or because I can't live without it?' Try a day without logging in.
Moreover, researchers have not found that playing video games is a particular hazard. Over 30 hours they saw problems, a around 6 hours they found only benefits. They found no differences between games like Call of Duty and games like Little Big Planet. No links between video game violence and real world violence. Gambling addiction and gaming addiction are different animals, one involves a powerful secondary reinforcer, the other does not.
(Sorry, out of order) Truthfully, this piece is full of speculation, misinformation, and pseudoscience. As an addictions specialist myself (BA social psychology, MA applied psychology, and CADC) I urge people to look carefully at current peer-reviewed and published research on video gaming. If you listen to the video carefully, you will hear the admission that the 1-2% figure given is not adjusted for co-morbid conditions such as mental illness or substance abuse.
Dopamine is our primary reward chemical & the chemical that is the most potent factor in addictive behavior, generally speaking, not endorphin. You made casual reference to the primitive defense mechanism known as "denial." A worthy concern, to be sure, but the piece is simply misleading and inaccurate. I've tried to hit 30 hours a week, I can't do it; like a majority of gamers, I hit a wall long before, but pair it with a secondary reinforcer, you'll see more problems.
Actually, that brings to mind a question: Are professional athletes addicted to their sport of choice? [See what I mean?] Truth is, I'd still need to do a bio-psychosocial assessment before I could answer that question in reference to any human's behavior.
@timhaas1 No they are obviously not, though I see what you mean, since they are professional athletes. It's their profession. Or are you suggesting that everybody in the workforce is addicted because they work more than 2hrs per day?
so what's their take on 'medication' they give people with mental problems.. .aren't they addictive!? I age or level up every year and the reward sux and I'm still here, so I'm addicted to life too!!! weee look!!!! my paycheck.. it's why i went to work... to get the reward of money! o.O omg media do something about the addiction of working!!! oh that a necessity and doesn't count??? who said it was, we could go back to hunting and trading!
@sassylittlebytch lolz working is a form of trading. you are trading your physical and mental resource for money, which you can use to trade for items/services that will satisfy your basic needs as well as luxury needs if you have a surplus of money.
To everyone on the internetz - if you spend here more than an hour a day, than yes, you are addicted : ) . Try not turning on your PC for a week and lets see how you will feel like - I can bet you will feel depression, you will have problems with finding what to do, you will, generally, deel emptiness. And I dont care if you will admit it or not - I , for a fact, know that is the case.
@KristinKickbutt how do you know for a fact that is the case? Are you saying if you enjoy any 1 activity for more than 1 hr a day, you are addicted to that behavior?
@KristinKickbutt - Your use of an hour as some sort of magic measurement is silly. The point is whether or not people moderate what they're doing, and do other things. Nobody told me I was addicted to playing guitar when I played 3+ hours a day... That was 'dedicated'.
Someone could spend 3 hours a day on the computer, but also get out, be creative, and do exercise. Suddenly, that's just an enthused hobby.
I've been heavily following Guild Wars 2, that game ruined other MMO's for me. Why did it ruin MMO's? It takes everything we love about MMOs and games, then takes away the things we don't like. Mix in amazing graphics, sound, lore, gameplay and you got yourself one top MMORPG.
Why play other skinner box MMO's, when Guild Wars 2 is about compulsion satisfaction.
If you haven't checked out the game already Junglist, it can help with the skinner box theory.
You call it "unethical game design", everyone else calls it "Good game design". No one wants to play a game that ends when you complete X objective and the entertainment value stops there. We call those games EA games.
@MadDemon64. How does the argument lose steam if the game is free? Whether people profit or not, the game design in MMOs still encourages compulsive, addictive behavior. Heroin is still active whether you pay for it or not. Games (if addictive in the first place) would be as well.
@MadDemon64 first of all... free MMO's although use the same tactics are generally worse at it. I have played many free MMO's and from the descriptions of types of gamers listed i lean the most towards explorer. Runescape and World of Warcraft are the only MMOs that i played for more than a week. Runescape stumbled upon being a fantastic game exploiting this purely through its insane drop table and training. You can either 1 grind guarinteed rewards 2 socialize 3 grind chance 1/100k+
Crazy Eyes made no sense. The chick's answer was schizophrenic gambling loner = Addicted gamer. Great video and i think thats all i got out of it lol.
dude there are alot more unethical things than just addiction for games. this is poorly covered.
