I am one of the ultimate LaBelle fans. Having said that...I'm not crazy about her rendition of this tune. There are moments that are magical, as in all of her music. But, I think we're so accustomed to hearing Deniece's light voice navigate this melody. LaBelle's voice seems too strong. Also, I don't care for the arrangement. Too much background. I'm far from a Williams fan, but I think this one belongs to her.

I've not heard this song for over twenty years and I had forgotten all about it. I found it again by searching Deniece Williams and wondering what this song 'Silly' was. I played it and it brought back those memories. Well, it is Deniece's song with her beautiful innocent high-pitched voice - but my Lord - Patti really murdered the song with her soulful experienced voice and the sentiments in her tones. So glad Patti kept it largely the same as the original. Love to both Deniece and Patti.
She simply doesn't have Neicy's range, next she'll try to sing Free. What a mess. Patti is great, but can't sell sweetness or deliver sex appeal. People are always saying songbirds like Diana & Niecy can't do what Patti does, but the question really is can Patti do what they can. It would be a mess if Patti sang Muscles, just as her rendition Silly was a mess. Please don't attempt "Free" Patti. It would be just plain wrong. Soft, sweet, sexy, sultry is simply not Patti's forte.

Patti had at least 7 octaves in her younger days, maintained at six for about 45 years and now at 67 can still reach 5 octaves. Deniece only has about three octaves, which are high octaves. As I said Deniece is wonderful, but Patti is the best.
