I want a Linux Distro that installs with KDE...I've never used KDE before, only GNOME. I'm looking for this because I want to install Backtrack4. I'm a computer security student at the U of M. So before wiping my Ubuntu and installing Backtrack4, I figured I'd install either Kubuntu, or OpenSUSE so that I could get used to the KDE environment.....which one do people recommend and why?
Didn't like how it ran on my system, far to slow and laggy. Plus it took forever to update all the files with 3 restarts and after the updates it ran slower...Great review, but I'll stick to Mint 9 KDE for now.
@cobrafazea Depends on your preference. The video here is showing KDE. KDE is very flashy, and nice looking, but I find it quite cluttered. Gnome is more simplistic, faster, and looks sharper.
It depends on your preference. I prefer Gnome because I find I can be more productive in it, because it's less distracting, and the applications are more straight forward.
All Linux applications work on both, but Gnome applications look ugly in KDE, and KDE applications look ugly in Gnome.
@Grundoko I choosed openSuse Gnome a while ago ( as the openSuse KDE was somehow outdated 4.4 and i needed 4.5 ) ...and i really find the gnome version one of the most amazing experiences i had with linux and i am not willing to change it :)
why do you use JFS? Its not completely ported to Linux yet and it doesn´t have any advantes to for example XFS (the opposide. Its much slower than XFS)
I don't see how you can compare Konqueror to Dolphin, it may look very simple on the outside, though it is full of functionality. You can surf the internet, view system folders and even view and edit files straight from the browser!
@TheQuestioner132 KDE4 is far too heavy for your specs. I have a Pentium 3 @ 1ghz, 768Mb Ram running with Mandriva's KDE4 - I'd say that this is near the minimum for KDE4. But on everything with 2ghz+ 512mb+ it runs fine and looks great.
it works without any problems and have memory usage about 87mb
the difference to you? I use Archlinux instead of Mandriva
what do we learn about that? If KDE takes to much memory, its the distributions fault. I even run 3D Desktop Effects on the Netbook withou and speed decrase.
@TheQuestioner132 If you're judging by the video then it was recorded in a VM with 768MB RAM. I have it installed on hardware with 4GB RAM and it's really fast, I'd say it does some things faster than Windows.
@frvfilms just install KDE on your ubuntu if it's looks you're looking for... Linux users don't use mac because they usually don't judge things by how fancy and shiny they look.
@Skelly117 ok. well what else is there besides that that is good? looking there are so many different ones it is hard to see what is what. why i used windows since didn't have to look at that many choices.
@james42519 Ram is crucial. Upgrade it to at least 256Mb, with 512Mb it would be good enough to run Gnome (Ubuntu). But you'd better go for some LXDE or XFCE based distro, like Lubuntu/Xubuntu. Then there's Puppy and DamnSmallLinux which is on the lower end.
@james42519 Well, I had a quite similar machine and used it to mess around with Gentoo and to learn all that stuff, that was quite worth. And I used an old Laptop for quite a long time: Pentium 1 @ 233mhz 48mb ram.
I got Ubuntu Lucid Lynx on an old Athlon XP 1800+ and it feels kinda sluggish :/

My Private Review : OpenSUSE 11.3 KDE it's FULL OF BUGS !!!
it does NOT install Grub (shame!) ;
it does NOT print on panasonic printers (even if it recognizes them properly);
KDE 4.x freezes when aspect-tuned;
KDE 4.x LOOSES multiple displays configuration ... just after logout.
I will not install it anymore, nevermore.
cicciotto82 1 year ago
@cicciotto82 Panasonic makes printers??? ;) I hadn't expierenced bugs, when installed video card drivers.
chronius9 1 year ago
@chronius9 Panasonic produces copiers, totally incompatible with Linux. Nor linux community makes them work. It's a 2-way incompatibility.
I did not talk about 'video card drivers' , but about a KDE 4.x bug that makes system to loose the configuration with two displays.

reinstall open suse with gnome it's alot less glitchy then kde

i was going to use this but apparmor is broken and won't turn on or let me create profiles which is annoying

@SeltsamerAttraktor
im running KDE4 on my Netbook
650 MHz Intel Atom and 512 mb of memory
it works without any problems and have memory usage about 87mb

Vamp898 1 year ago
@Vamp898 I had to use a PIII with 384Mb for a few weeks. KDE3.5 self-compiled with all optimizations and no addons (Gentoo). It was a pain.
RAM is simply crucial.
SeltsamerAttraktor 1 year ago
@SeltsamerAttraktor
Than really something gets wrong. KDE 3.5 (there is a repo for archlinux) works on my EeePC the same speed my KDE 4.5 works on my 2x2 DualCore
Vamp898 1 year ago
@Vamp898 How much RAM does that EeePC have?
SeltsamerAttraktor 1 year ago
@SeltsamerAttraktor
512mb

@TheQuestioner132 That's why it requires at least 1Gb of memory at install..
KDE usually is for 1Gb+ systems. (eye candy...) Ubuntu works decent with 512Gb memory.
SuperiorBeen 1 year ago
@SuperiorBeen 512Gb memory? So now I know, why 90%+ of all supercomputers run Linux ;P

@SeltsamerAttraktor don't think that will happen. this memory is pc100 or pc133 168 pin dim memory i think. don't know if the computer is worth it.
