so its an advance reconnaissance plane which flies up to 80k feet. holy shit so how can the other side shoot it down?? and how long can this stay on that altitide?
If shit hapens and the air-craft was particulary destroyed (i wiss not)......they will eject that is sure.BUT how long will it take to land? I mean it is 25 908km
Swedish JA 37 Viggen pilots, using the predictable patterns of SR-71 routine flights over the Baltic Sea, managed to lock their radar on the SR-71 on numerous occasions. Despite heavy jamming from the SR-71, target illumination was maintained by feeding target location from ground-based radars to the fire-control computer in the Viggen. The most common site for the lock-on to occur was the thin stretch of international airspace between Öland and Gotland that the SR-71 used on the return flight.
Crews flying the SR-71 at 80,000 ft (24,000 m) faced two main survival problems: maintaining consciousness at high altitude, and surviving ejection. With a standard pressure demand oxygen mask, human lungs cannot absorb oxygen quickly enough above 43,000 ft (13,000 m).
The pressure difference inside the mask versus the cockpit pressure on the chest also makes exhalation extremely difficult. In addition, emergency ejection at Mach 3.2 would expose the pilot to an instant heat rise pulse of approximately 450 °F (230 °C) as a result of the air flow. To solve these problems, the David Clark Company was hired to produce protective full pressure suits for the A-12, YF-12, MD-21 and SR-71 aircraft. These suits were later adapted for use on the Space Shuttle.
The SR-71 was in service with the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1998. Twelve of the 32 aircraft were destroyed in accidents; none were lost to enemy action. Only one crew member, Jim Zwayer, a Lockheed flight-test reconnaissance and navigation systems specialist, was killed in a flight accident. The rest of the crew members ejected safely or evacuated their aircraft on the ground.
Beautiful airplane. (BTW the 1st on IS the YF-12 - conical nose - but who cares its just as purdy.) It's a pity that 99.9% of the BB footage is taking off, landing, or from the inflight refueller, because it's only in "first gear". You never see it flying fast enough for the engines to be in ramjet config. Wish they had've organised a highspeed flypast once, or some onboard footage. Nice vid anyway
Back in the 60's the US Air Force developed in top secret a new breed of spy plane, made entirely... OF PURE AWESOMENESS!! They called it... THE BLACK BIRD! AKA THE AWESOME BIRD!!
I read somewhere that the fuel used for this bird was more expensive than Scotch Whiskey... And that the engines had to be kept running for several hours after landing.
I can imagine its fuel economy! Ha ha! Thank you for the video
@hsxtcqm no this fuel is 1$/pound.It is known as jp-7 fuel.what you said is an urban legend.idk if the engines had to be kept running, but that doesn 't make any sense
The top speed is mach 3.3 and can fly at over 16 miles above earth. The first sr-71 was fown on December 22, 1964. One was flown from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. in 1 hour 4 minutes and 20 seconds at an average speed of 2,124 miles per hour.
@kingkong87m Because if the pilots were identified as spies, they'd be tortured until they spilled, then killed afterward, whereas a soldier performing regular reconnaissance duties would get off much easier. This measure was taken in case one of the planes actually went down over the Soviet Union.
@Historystartsnow yes its was the yf 12, originoaly it was an experamental interceptor with weapons. but it was better to be a spy plane than interceptor
@Historystartsnow I'm pretty sure the yf 12 has a different nose geometry, also I've seen a SR 71 up close, in real life. I'd say that's a 71. They are -big- planes. And also totally badass <3
@alcapone796 Close, the first Blackbird was a single seat spyplane called the A-12, that was built for the CIA. The YF-12 was actually an attempt to build an interceptor version. It got cancelled becuase of politics and money. The SR-71 was the 2 seat spyplane flown by the Air Force.
Not true, the SR-71 A/B/C's had these flattened out nose cones... This one has the round nose cone witch obviosly isn't a SR-71. xfire7 is right, nice try...
@xfire7 You're right, the chines end where the nose cone begins (look closely in the first few seconds), and there are ventral fins under the engine nacelles of the YF-12A. There is also another fold down ventral fin in the rear of the fuselage that's deployed during flight.
@tony3461 One more thing I should mention, the two seat SR-71 also has ventral fins under the engine nacelles for directional stability due to increased fuselage area, but no central fold down fin like the YF-12.
Not exactly, they are special suits designed to keep the pilot and co-pilot or observer safe and warm because they could reach an altitude of up to 85,000 feet. It's difficult to breathe and retain normal body functions at that altitude and these suits helped. They also protected the human body(somewhat) during the stress caused by ejection,, not to mention the actual fall and parachute deployment.
The most important task of the suit is of course keep it's wearer in normal (ground) temperature and pressure. If you pass height of 11.8 miles / ~19 km .. (so called Armstrong line), your blood will start to boil, if you are not wearing pressurized suit.
@Historystartsnow The suits are there to not only keep them warm, but to keep oxygen saturation at levels similar to those experienced at sea level. Oxygen available at this altitude would be around 1/8th of sea level concentrations and bodily functions would shut down as if asphyxiation were occurring. Blood would boil at 80,000 because of the lack of atmospheric pressure. Important aspect of the suits.
@Historystartsnow actually the first space-suits were modeled after the suits worn by the blackbird U2 and blackbird crews.also at 85.000 feet your body fluids would boil instantly.
@tarded55 what would cause the body fluids to boil at that altitude? i just had a argument with my friend about this and he said they would freeze instead of boiling.
@dicksucker444 yeah...similar to astronauts suits...because the g-forces generated at mach 3+ are just enormous ...and the suit has its own environment....and life support system
The plane is great, really, especially for the year of 1966. when it was introduced. Very space-like design. But the attribute of a "warrior" is not suitable here... after all the plane's purpose was scouting and/or electronic warfare. High construction costs per unit and unpredictable factors from high speeds (1st cause of all planes that crashed) were the main reasons for retirement.
GORGEOUS aircraft, my other favorite (other than the C5 and F-16). Amazing capabilities for their time. 5/5 stars. I remember their high, screaming moan - one of the loudest takeoffs I've ever heard.
the aircraft in the first few seconds is not and sr-71...its a yf-71...the armed prototype version of the sr-71

As long as they belonged to the U.S.A.F they wore markings. They disappeared when the SR-71s were transferred to the C.I.A.
julosx 2 years ago
its a factory model meanin its just a test or its probably to train some person. missions were usually held at night so you couldnt see the markings.
