@DrGregDVM My redhead chi does this whenever she is excited or if it's windy outside and she just panics. Do you believe this to be an allergy as well? I usually massage the throat area or put her nose on my mouth for 3 seconds and that stops the panic and the attack.
How can you tell whether your dog is reverse sneezing or can't breathe? I have a 14 yo large mixed breed dog who does this out of the blue. He seems distressed when it happens. I'd rather not wait until he passes out to realize he actually can't breathe. Is there anything I can for him during the episode?
@MJEddie Anytime this happens but air is moving and the gums are pink, it is reverse sneezing. If he really were to pass out it would be due to heart issues, choking, or having a petit mal seizure. Reverse sneezing is really very common and due to allergies or throat irritation

@skye0998 Jacks are prone to allergy problems, both food and hay fever. During high pollen counts, wind or dust, antihistamines may help. Check dogdishdietcom for free home remedy download
Thank goodness I found this site....my Jack Russell started reverse sneezing at midnight a week ago, it terrified her and me. Gums are pink. Diet is homecooked and she is on Aktivait, treats are carrots and red peppers so dont why this has begun...she is 9 yrs old. Covering her nostrils works, and stops it, are there any long term problems? Great advice, thank you so much ...from the UK
to him at all, and oddly enough, neither as my boyfriend really who is also slightly allergic to cats. My dog has not reversed sneezed since moving, before the new kitten came, nor afterward. Do you have any idea why? Both the cats are similar, both are long haired cats, so it's not like the new kitten is hairless or anything. lol He has long fur just like my Maine Coon, well about as long. lol I thought that is anyone knew, it would be you! Hope to hear back from you soon! Have a great day!
@xWolfHauntx Allergens can be quite specific and one cat is worse than the other to provoke his allergies. You can try benadryl or claritin on bad days and sometimes dogs seem to grow out of it. Fish oil capsules may help (one daily) the omega three's help to soothe the immune system.
@DrGregDVM Hmmm very interesting, I didn't know different cats can cause different reactions to allergies, I thought if you're allergic to cats then all of them would cause the same reaction. Thanks!
My dog is allergic to cats, and the more cats she's around the more she reverse(and regular) sneezes, (among other things, like a runny nose and irritated eyes)I have a Adult Maine Coon that she grew up with and she had fairly bad allergies with(but not as bad like when I would stay with my aunt, who has three cats and a very..cluttered household) but now me and her moved, and had to leave my cat behind, but now I have a new kitten who's about 5 months old, and she has had virtually no reaction
she does it when she gets excited and we were in 4-H and she use to do it if she was tired and didnt want to run she would do it to get out of the ring haha

What do you do if the gums aren't pink? Also, if they are sneezing, can the owners do anything to help them breath better?
briannalynn1998 2 weeks ago
@briannalynn1998 Compress their chest to see if moving air in their lungs helps.Take them into the vet ASAP.
If they are reverse sneezing you can push on their sides gently with both hands. A benadryl also helps Dose at dogdishdietcom
