this solo is actually pretty crappy playing wise its a tough solo but its too flashing needs to be more like kitchen sink or something which is more chop intended plus it dosnt link together that well which the main reasong it sounds like crap
i think i know what piece you are talking about. it wouldnt happen to be called wooden sink would it. we played that music as audition music for my schools drum line
Interesting; I've seen Dr. Wooton perform this solo several times, I kinda hate that the ending part isn't on here. Somebody ought to try and find a video of him doing "The Downfall of Paris" or "Connecticut Halftime" on one of the old Cooperman rope tension drums...that, friends, is real drumming.
I'll take mediocre. That means I am better than half the world! That video was shot in 1993 and is still available through Row Loff Productions along with several other solos. I am not that old... 45. Still play and give lots of clinics. Keep it positive!
A Pearl Free-floater in '83? Did they have them back then? He looks a little ackward with tricks, but rudimental playing really doesn't get much cleaner than that. I once saw him demonstrate the sounds of tenors for a crowd by playing simple descending triplets, and the crowd actually started cheering, it was so clean and perfect.
This doesn't look that hard.

@sangragganguli The rhythms aren't hard, the solo is based off of the visuals. Which happen to be utterly ridiculous,

This is John Wooton. I would guess this video dates to about 1982 or 83. Rich is a great player, but John is the man.
PandemoniumSteelBand 4 years ago
He's like Rich Viano, except not as good, with the whole tapping the stick with his hand.
