@countryrebel22 you're right autoshift don't switch gears but if you drive it manually you can skip gears! Autoshift have a full clutch as a manual! When pulling away with autoshift you must depress the clutch from there onwards it change automatically! Ask anyone with argosy autoshifts they have clutches!
@MrCooper1982 Those auto shifts, aka Shift-O-Matics, do not come with clutches you can operate yourself. The clutch is controlled by air pressure as with the gear shift solenoids. All you do with an autoshift is hit the gas. The transmission computer does the rest for you. You can set the gear shift to shift thru even number gears or odd number gears or all gears.
The autoshift gearbox is a fuel saver! It only change at a certain RPM think 1500rpm. If change to manual you can skip gears as you like but you can't judge the weight as a autoshift! Here in S.A we don't drive 18wheelers, we drive 22 to 30wheelers called super and interlink trailers! Those things weigh another load of that of a 18wheeler loaded. I'm a owner driver and empty trailers I only climb sir lowrys pass in cape town @ 40-60km/h! Think the axle weight guys
I love that sound. May I ask why you shift all these gears? You could skip one and half gear every time you shift. That way, you will reach the right speed faster.
So it shifts thru every single gear no matter what?? no way u can like program it or something? forget that, i like being in control of what gear im in, especially thru hills, or in stop and go traffic with stoplights i wanna be able to wind it out and get up to speed, seems like with the auto u could be at a red light and when it turns green u wont even get thru the intersection before it turns red again, cuz u sure aint going anywhere fast in this video, and yur empty!
with one pipe that sumbitch sounds pretty good i got a c16 know about two months ago actually but i wined it at about 21 2200 rpm just to make it bark lol btw nice jakes
Yep, it is an Smart Shift from Freightliner and works on a normal 18speed Fuller gearbox. For those of you that don't know, there is a computer with an electric motor on top of the gearbox that do all the shifting work. On the shift paddle next to steering wheel you can select auto or manual. Here I drove in manual and did the shiftin' when I wanted it to shift. You can leave your foot on accelerator, the computer will regulate everything, but here I shifted with takin' my foot of when I shift.
Yeah, but here I let off the throttle when I shift, thats why it sounds more like a manual box. Your timing have to be perfect for there is 3/4 sec delay after you've pulled the shift lever before it starts to shift. If you let off the throttle to early, it won't sound nice.
caterpillar is phasing out on line haul (class 8) truck engines in the next few years. they are coming out with a line of vocational trucks (dump trucks, cement, etc). if i remember correctly they are teaming up with international or someone like that, and it will be an actual caterpillar truck brand. they arent making very much profit with line haul engines, and since the government is cracking down harder on emissions for line haul trucks real soon, caterpillar is basically saying screw it.
a few people from carter cat told me about that. i think detroits are still bad, but they are improving. i kept getting told by cat owners and techs about the trouble of trying to keep cats in emissions standards.
You call it boring driving a TRUCK? You must be very, very ignorant for what you just stated. Trucking is one of the hardest job. It requires your full concentration, and yet you say its boring...
only problem with those C-16 that i see come in still is the crank brakeing but they are one hell of a nice heay pulling engine not a cummins or detriot can catch them
i will miss caterpillar 6-16 .you can say what you want about them but to me they was some hell of a engines. i loved the way they sounded with straight stacks.and if i has to raise one from the dead c-16 will rise again and will run
this is auto "smart shift" or paddle shift nice trruck drove 1 in new zealand from palmy to auckland and drove a volvo fh12 "i-shift" best trucks those volvos
naw all it has is a brake peddal and a fuel peddle .i drove a dump truck like that with the same setup and it was so nice and powerful with out the stickshift .its really beautiful if youre stuck in traffic no tired knee from holding the clutch or moving the stick .you drive it like a automatic car
i see you can still get those engines ,remanufactured though ,ill be going to school to work on them so if you need some work on them let me know, ill be happy to keep it running for you ...
its a semi-auto also known as the autoshift. on the steering column to the right is the shifter it has a switch on it that you can go to full auto or manual mode. in manual mode you pull up to go into a higher gear or push down to go to a lower gear
ill bet is a allison trans cause they had to cut back the power on the 6-16 cause the torque was striping the gears out the trans so they run it at the most 550 hp .now these days they have another trans that would handle the 600 cat
great sound ... for awhile.... then try long distance driving with it... yuck ..no thanks gives me a huge headache.... wish I had the auto trans though ...nice
should put some 8's on that thing ! definetly sound more mellow and not ark as much ...she'll GROWL LOL. I love how those big 600's have a distinct sound to them , sound way better then the 475/550 but they are great to.
i like the motor not the truck

@MrCooper1982 Sometimes it dosnt. Sometimes they go nuts and rev to 2000rpm, normally when its empty. But they do safe fuel.
