Not bad but there's still no contest. Sennheiser's ORPHEUS Full Electrostatic Head-Speakers from about 17(?) years ago, which most of you imbecile kiddies wouldn't have a clue about, let alone what true audio is. (Google it!) They were something like US$13,000 (?), so even the best and most costly STAX electrostatics don't even come close. Best headphone I've ever seen or used and nothing since has even come close. It even came with its own tube amp which itself shames even most home amps.
QUESTION: I want a good pair of headphones (Mainly for GAMING) which is better... the HD600's or the HD595's? OR any other headphones that you may think are better for use mainly for gaming, I want great positional audio, clarity, and bass. Open ear preferred. Thanks :-)
PS: I will be using the ASUS Xonar ST soundcard, has prebuilt amp.
@bloodmoney52 They're two completely different uses. You're not supposed to be using these things outside in traffic expecting to listen to your ipod. And closed and open headphones have very different sounds for different uses.
There is no better or worse, just better or worse for the situation you're using them in.
If you mod the PC-350 headset, you can essentially get yourself a closed version of these.
@CheckExplicit No, you can't. They are shaped completely differently, and they have a completely different sound. Just because they use the same drivers doesn't mean they'll sound the same, or even remotely the same.
@bloodmoney52 Apparently you don't understand the difference between open and closed head phones.. And.. I'm not going to even respond to the second half because it's obvious you're just trolling now.
@AnderssonEric You can get "good base out of a pair of $20 headphones, that doesn't make them a good pair of headphones. I could find a pair for half the price that would simply run circles around your BLOSE for half the price, and yes even have better base. What you define as good base is base that is predominant, why not just use an EQ?
@AnderssonEric Headphones are not about bass...Sennheiser headphones have a natural sound...bose headphones enchance bass artificialy, and songs dont sound like they should.
@khantko @khantko That makes sense then. Be sure to mod your Hd-555 by removing the foam pads on the inside of the grills. Sennheiser put em there to artificially make them worse than the 595's. It is a real simple mod, the sound would closely match the more expensive 595 (which do not have the pads) these are not the same thing as the sound reflectors.
Eh.. Dude, you do know you can't hear the quality of these phones - through the internet, as it has to go through your phones, this video says NOTHING.
I prefer the Audio Technica ATH-AD700 ($100) to these, I have owned both but sold the HD-555 as they don't even compare. I am a Senn guy to, if you want detail and clarity, stay away from the HD-555 and the HD-595. Find a pair of HD-600's on ebay, they are in a completely different league. But if you dont want to use a headphone amp, pickup the ATH-AD700 Audio Technica's because they are outstanding for the price and are more detailed than anything Sennheiser has within $200.
@ZeDaxter haha i have skull crushers, they are amazing haha, hate the whole "ah shit my battery is low" haha, these headphones look good and sound pretty good too
Trust me, I have both. Just look up reviews. If you do get the HD-555's, be sure to mod them, there is a rubber spacer that sits between the back of the driver's and the grills. As far as anyone can tell, this is the major difference between the HD-555 and the HD-595's. But to be honest, even after modding the HD-555, I still much prefered the ATH-AD700 (Strange color) but I love em.
Personally I prefer the looks of the Beats and I think they both have a very good sound quality, with the Sennheisers the leakage is really terrible though. Even at around 40-50% volume, others in the room or on the subway can hear what I hear
no they are not really. i have the 515 and theyre awesome! theyre pretty same whit 515 but 555 is just a lil bit better in everything.i bought 515 cause in finland 515 is 86 euroes and 555 129 euroes and i dint have alot but i recommend these.
@yasirwisdom depends what you call low...they leak a lot, they are open
take a pair of headphones off your head and see how loud they are. it's about the same thing, but the open ones sound abouyt 20% less loud in the outside as the speakers are pointed in the inside.
It's open dynamic. They're meant to leak so that they can have better acoustic sound. The HD series is mainly geared towards audio professionals so leakage isn't a problem in that regard.
@yasirwisdom yes they are..they are open and you're supposed to listen to them in silence, alone. if you can't afford $1000 speakers just get these. you can listen to great sound quality for less $. you need silence to get the most out of these
@I3eam yeah we made some bad experience with bose too not with headphones but 5.1 sound system cost 4keuros and ROCK (not!^^) its just alright not awesome as you would expect from the price
@beholdthedarkhorse Seriously I have flash news for you, Sennheiser is not THE best as many misinformed would like to believe ! Beyerdynamic, Audio-Technica, Denon, Sony (yes Sony Qualia and the legendary iconic MDR-R10),AKG, Ultrasone (Edition 8 and 10), STAX (electrostatic kings)and Grado among ...others goe toe to toe with Sennheiser at many price levels. I know I have pretty much all the best of the best. Others just read about them , I listen.
tenjinnim: yeah, but the 555 can be had for $80ish on amazon. Spending hundreds of dollars on headphones just isn't reasonable to most people, and the 555 really provide entry level audiophile sound at a reasonable price. Most consumers won't need better sound than what they get out of this headphone.
Everyone who is saying that the Beats headphones are the best are probably 13 years old and have never tried anything else. They are not bad but they are only worth about $100 there are so many better options
No. Any number of headphones or in-ear monitors (IEMs) in the market used by musicians, sound engineers and whatnot can also be bought or used by people.
my dear friend, comparing bose to the sennheiser 500+ hd series, its quite like comparing the rolls royce and KIA, only where they are equally pricey. its not that i have fanboyism towards sennheiser, not that i have a grudge gainst bose, but its like heaven and earth. the hd series will always be vastly superior for the price paid
Thank you! It is hard to tell people the truth. They think Bose is the shit, not matter what it is. Then they come over and listen to my Klipsch speakers and try to find excuses for their overpriced Bose system.
Seriously, though, I'm having a lot of trouble finding an audiophile headset that works for me.
um sorry but to say the dres suck is an enormous lie. i went in to future shop the other day and i say a pair of dr. dres on a demo stand so i listened to them, and i was completely blown away on how good they sounded. and im not in to heavy bass or anything like that, every sound that came out of those headphones were amazing
Yeah, if you ask anyone who's one of the teen numb nuts who like thumping bass and nothing more.
Ask someone who actually knows a thing or two about audio, the beats aren't nearly worth their price tag. Not even $100, GOOD headphones have become so cheap that the beats can't even compare to those. Maybe the $50 bracket.
Ask who likes the beats on Head-Fi, google the forum. Let's see their responses (1000's of headphone users).
Yeah, I try them every time I go to Futureshop, and one of my friends had them. Most overpriced headphones on the planet. You'd be an idiot to buy them really. And that's probably why you're defending them so much.
Sennheiser HD555 beats the hell out of those things. And those go for $80-100 online, if not less. I could name others too. MS-1, SR60, SR80, AD700, Denon D1001, etc. All headphones that beat the "Beats" within the $60-$100 bracket.
actually im 16, what because im not losing my cool and not swearing makes me immature? i think its the other way around. sure, the beats are overpriced, but that doesnt make them sound terrible, and i dont own a pair either
Well any number of people usually get uptight when people talk about their favourite stuff...
Gotta forgive him for it. The name calling was a little unnecessary, but you are definitely entitled to your opinion about what headphones/earphones are nice to you.
I have been with both people who prefer "cheap earphones" and those with "audiophile-grade stuff", and I always keep an open mind about it. I also ask for others to do the same for me, because I like my hi-fi music.
Audiophile or no, a true audiophile not only tells others what is bad(Bose) and what is fine, but they do not impose their opinion upon other people's.
If Raca thinks that the Beats are good for his ears then leave him be. I say you're better off slamming iBud lovers who think they're superior to DT880's (no, please don't actually slam them) than finding fault with Raca. He's right about the open mind.
I think a good pair of customs at a fraction of the price could already achieve around 60-80+% of what the Orpheus, HD800, STAX headphones and some other legends could offer. Somethine like the JH13Pro, perhaps?
well.. i have a set of DENON AHD5000 and sennheiser HD650 BALANCED on some OFC cardass cables running through a GLOW vacuum tube amps.
and trust me, nothing sounds better than high fidelity... i have yet heard the lower end of any headphones to compete with this. As a matter of fact... i have heard a noticeable, comparable difference between EVEN my balanced HD650 on amp compared to HD800. When u actually compare the orpheus to a home theater room, its an investment. thats the way i see it
i wont lie... you are right on one thing. there is no correllation between the exponential growth in cost and actual performance of what we are paying for, but for true fidelity, these electrostatic transducers cant be beat. and its not 60-80% of what they achieve... more like ... 40-50%
Some people can justify that sort of investment. Some cannot.
For me, I find my Livewires to be already quite "top-of-the-line", I might not be able to justify buying say, a pair of STAX earspeakers, Ultrasone Ed. 8 and all those.
It's great people like you and I are appreciating hi-fi music though. There's no looking back the moment I bought my ER-6i since 1year+ ago.
While that is true, you would find that, upgrading your sources (amp, dac) and even going to higher headphones, you will find the bass gets less muddy and more defined and tight. Though, presence and attack in the bass still remain or get bigger.
I guess some people have gotten accustomed to muddy though.
Or rather, that self-perceived improvement that makes you do what you usually do to good or catchy songs :
1)Nod your head/headbang.
2)You tap your feet.
3)You get into the song and start singing/humming along.
4)You can't stop yourself from saying things like "mmm...excellent".
And the list continues.
To quote somebody, "I don't care if a earphone has the resolving power of the Hubble telescope. If it isn't making me tap my feet, it ain't what I want".
I have the MS-1i. Great tight defined bass. But still plenty quantity. It's just, the quantity isn't muddy at all. It's one of the best headphones in the regard of 'it makes me tap my feet/headbang'.
It's just some people don't give audio equipment a try unless it has undefined, flabby, farty, muddy bass. People (young teens) should give it a fair chance sometime ;)
if you think the dre's sound nice... go try some HD650, Denon AHD7000, AKG 701, Stax, ultimate ears... and then come back...
they might sound good for now... but what you really need to do is to compare them to one of these headphones posted above.. and use a good source... even flac is considered ... ok quality by this point... drive them from a good source and you will clearly hear the difference
So many fake headphones and eraphones too, it's scary. No sennheiser headphones tho, only the CX400 and 500, so many of those are fakes. Bose IE, just forget it, toooo many fakes. Shure SCL series too. Buy at authorized stores is my advice to people, not ebay, it's like scamville there with headphones.
HAHAHA, getthe DR.DRE's Monster Beats if you love bass. THe bass is spectacularly large on those but not overpowering. These dont have much bass but very detailed. Trust me, get the Beats, you will be in heaven. I like treble more so I have these, beats also have like detailed and clear treble too.
just got my 555s today. kinda underwhelmed with the bass, but ive been told most high quality headphones dont sound their best out of the box. and that i should expect better bass once i give them a chance to burn in. How do yours sound now?
lol I just got mine today also. I had a pair before but sold them to get Grado SR60's, big mistake. I saw some used HD555's and could't pass up. I got them and now i'm happy again. The bass is perfect but I use my Ipod Touch on the Treble Booster EQ. Thats the setting I use because I love treble. Sounds PERFECT! The SR60's now they had alot of bass in my opinion. Also you are right, every headphone WILL sound better with about 10-20 hours of use, you will see. I hope that helped.
I had these when i first started getting into better sounding cans and speakers. Now I have moved on from the Sennheisers to brands that fill my needs better such as Grado. Man... i was loving my SR325is with my RA1 amp untill i got the GS1000i's.... talk about a soundstage.
I would highly reccomend the ATH-AD700's over these. They have a better soundstage and are much more confortable. I have listened to both and the Ad700's have a tighter base and the highs seem more precise.
i would not recommend these, they have decent sound quality, but a lot of the sound escapes from the headphones themselves. Its almost like wearing speakers on your ears and it is very clear to others around just what you are listening to. I much prefer my Bose QC2's.
@bloodmoney52 Fuck Dre, get Denon Headphones

BOSE - Buy Other Sound Equipment. The man who coined that term is so right. I tried the Tripports and they sounded only 50-ish dollar phones.

very good headset :) but i sold mine for the beats.

Talk about a downgrade.
Jfroese2007 2 years ago 4
are these really a lot better than the Bose headphones and Beats by Dre?
justintzung 2 years ago
cant say about the Bose (no model specified) .... but for sure 105% better than Dres >> have good bass but horrible overall sound ...
akaSEBASTO 2 years ago
oh ok.
and sorry, how is the sennheiser compared to the bose quietcomfort 3 on-ear and over-ear?
justintzung 2 years ago
my dear friend, comparing bose to the sennheiser 500+ hd series, its quite like comparing the rolls royce and KIA, only where they are equally pricey. its not that i have fanboyism towards sennheiser, not that i have a grudge gainst bose, but its like heaven and earth. the hd series will always be vastly superior for the price paid

as a certified audiophile... i will tell you what bose stands for
bose - buy other sound equipment....
tenjinnim 2 years ago
Thank you! It is hard to tell people the truth. They think Bose is the shit, not matter what it is. Then they come over and listen to my Klipsch speakers and try to find excuses for their overpriced Bose system.
Seriously, though, I'm having a lot of trouble finding an audiophile headset that works for me.
michelsonluke 2 years ago
um sorry but to say the dres suck is an enormous lie. i went in to future shop the other day and i say a pair of dr. dres on a demo stand so i listened to them, and i was completely blown away on how good they sounded. and im not in to heavy bass or anything like that, every sound that came out of those headphones were amazing
Racamonkey 2 years ago
yea i also tryed them at a best buy and they were amazing. but also $300
M3meeksM3 2 years ago
You clearly haven't listened to anything close to good headphones then.
Either that, or you're deaf.
zolium 2 years ago
clearly your deaf, because you can ask anyone and they will say the beats sound awesome
Racamonkey 2 years ago
Yeah, if you ask anyone who's one of the teen numb nuts who like thumping bass and nothing more.
Ask someone who actually knows a thing or two about audio, the beats aren't nearly worth their price tag. Not even $100, GOOD headphones have become so cheap that the beats can't even compare to those. Maybe the $50 bracket.
Ask who likes the beats on Head-Fi, google the forum. Let's see their responses (1000's of headphone users).
Ha... everyone...
zolium 2 years ago
your such an idiot how about keeping an open mind. have you ever even tried them?
Racamonkey 2 years ago
Oh nice, "your such an idiot!" Are you 12?
Yeah, I try them every time I go to Futureshop, and one of my friends had them. Most overpriced headphones on the planet. You'd be an idiot to buy them really. And that's probably why you're defending them so much.
Sennheiser HD555 beats the hell out of those things. And those go for $80-100 online, if not less. I could name others too. MS-1, SR60, SR80, AD700, Denon D1001, etc. All headphones that beat the "Beats" within the $60-$100 bracket.
zolium 2 years ago
actually im 16, what because im not losing my cool and not swearing makes me immature? i think its the other way around. sure, the beats are overpriced, but that doesnt make them sound terrible, and i dont own a pair either
Racamonkey 2 years ago
Well any number of people usually get uptight when people talk about their favourite stuff...
Gotta forgive him for it. The name calling was a little unnecessary, but you are definitely entitled to your opinion about what headphones/earphones are nice to you.
I have been with both people who prefer "cheap earphones" and those with "audiophile-grade stuff", and I always keep an open mind about it. I also ask for others to do the same for me, because I like my hi-fi music.
SeraphimFaith 2 years ago
zolium, cool it.
I own a pair of Livewires customs btw.
SeraphimFaith 2 years ago
sennheiser orpheus... bow down ... those are some good headphones
tenjinnim 2 years ago
You're crazy, not everybody can buy those =P
I think a good pair of customs at a fraction of the price could already achieve around 60-80+% of what the Orpheus, HD800, STAX headphones and some other legends could offer. Somethine like the JH13Pro, perhaps?
SeraphimFaith 2 years ago
well.. i have a set of DENON AHD5000 and sennheiser HD650 BALANCED on some OFC cardass cables running through a GLOW vacuum tube amps.
and trust me, nothing sounds better than high fidelity... i have yet heard the lower end of any headphones to compete with this. As a matter of fact... i have heard a noticeable, comparable difference between EVEN my balanced HD650 on amp compared to HD800. When u actually compare the orpheus to a home theater room, its an investment. thats the way i see it
tenjinnim 2 years ago
i wont lie... you are right on one thing. there is no correllation between the exponential growth in cost and actual performance of what we are paying for, but for true fidelity, these electrostatic transducers cant be beat. and its not 60-80% of what they achieve... more like ... 40-50%
lol
tenjinnim 2 years ago
Hey...like it's said, "to each his/her own".

Hey man, can you name me good headphones for under a 100 bucks with great bass, excellent sound
Bloodsport1 2 years ago
Depends what you mean when you say great bass. Great bass isn't the muddy crap you hear in teenager's cars. Good bass is tight and defined.
I think your best bet would be the Denon D1001.
zolium 2 years ago
Many people have their own definitions. Some like it muddy (those that cannot tell), some like it tight and punchy and such.
Then some like less quantity (ER4P?) and some like lots (SF5EB, Atrio). So yeah.
SeraphimFaith 2 years ago
While that is true, you would find that, upgrading your sources (amp, dac) and even going to higher headphones, you will find the bass gets less muddy and more defined and tight. Though, presence and attack in the bass still remain or get bigger.
I guess some people have gotten accustomed to muddy though.
zolium 2 years ago
Maybe me saying "some people cannot tell the difference or improvement" would have been better.
I am not against upgrading. I am against upgrading if one can not tell improvement significant enough to justify the price tags.
SeraphimFaith 2 years ago
Or rather, that self-perceived improvement that makes you do what you usually do to good or catchy songs :
1)Nod your head/headbang.
2)You tap your feet.
3)You get into the song and start singing/humming along.
4)You can't stop yourself from saying things like "mmm...excellent".
And the list continues.
To quote somebody, "I don't care if a earphone has the resolving power of the Hubble telescope. If it isn't making me tap my feet, it ain't what I want".
SeraphimFaith 2 years ago
I have the MS-1i. Great tight defined bass. But still plenty quantity. It's just, the quantity isn't muddy at all. It's one of the best headphones in the regard of 'it makes me tap my feet/headbang'.
It's just some people don't give audio equipment a try unless it has undefined, flabby, farty, muddy bass. People (young teens) should give it a fair chance sometime ;)
zolium 2 years ago
if you think the dre's sound nice... go try some HD650, Denon AHD7000, AKG 701, Stax, ultimate ears... and then come back...
they might sound good for now... but what you really need to do is to compare them to one of these headphones posted above.. and use a good source... even flac is considered ... ok quality by this point... drive them from a good source and you will clearly hear the difference
tenjinnim 2 years ago
What the hell is up with that lame music? Doesn't anyone listen to rock anymore.
HD555 are fine ( I have a pair ). Bass is weak...need an eq or bass adjustment on iPod. Good cans for gaming if plugged into home receiver.

So many fake headphones and eraphones too, it's scary. No sennheiser headphones tho, only the CX400 and 500, so many of those are fakes. Bose IE, just forget it, toooo many fakes. Shure SCL series too. Buy at authorized stores is my advice to people, not ebay, it's like scamville there with headphones.
fkthsh 2 years ago
anyone compare these to dr dre's? I like hard hitting bass and these don't hit as hard as I wanted. They're still great though
heresatissue 2 years ago
HAHAHA, getthe DR.DRE's Monster Beats if you love bass. THe bass is spectacularly large on those but not overpowering. These dont have much bass but very detailed. Trust me, get the Beats, you will be in heaven. I like treble more so I have these, beats also have like detailed and clear treble too.
fkthsh 2 years ago
just got my 555s today. kinda underwhelmed with the bass, but ive been told most high quality headphones dont sound their best out of the box. and that i should expect better bass once i give them a chance to burn in. How do yours sound now?
etherealeyes 2 years ago
lol I just got mine today also. I hope that helped.
fkthsh 2 years ago
you need an amp
SchneiderStudios 2 years ago
Hey bassheads. Think you know what gives real bass?
I dare you. Try the Futuresonics Atrio, the "godfather of bass". You will walk away feeling happy.
If not, there is the Super Fi. 5 Pro Extended Bass (EB). Or the Sennheiser IE8 if you're still bass-crazed...
SeraphimFaith 2 years ago
I had these when i first started getting into better sounding cans and speakers. Now I have moved on from the Sennheisers to brands that fill my needs better such as Grado. Man... i was loving my SR325is with my RA1 amp untill i got the GS1000i's.... talk about a soundstage.
justinkrz1992 2 years ago
I would highly reccomend the ATH-AD700's over these. They have a better soundstage and are much more confortable. I have listened to both and the Ad700's have a tighter base and the highs seem more precise.
Heartless5141 2 years ago
They're also £20-30 more expensive.
zedninja 2 years ago
How much for these beauties?
Zeppfan1295 2 years ago
i would not recommend these, they have decent sound quality, but a lot of the sound escapes from the headphones themselves. Its almost like wearing speakers on your ears and it is very clear to others around just what you are listening to. I much prefer my Bose QC2's.
