As a 22 year old whose all but GROWN UP with both, I find it an almost unfair comparison FOR JESSE to be expected to live up to Brock's genius. And this is comning from someone who has a complete and utter respect for Jesse and has seen him more times than I can remember. But stop the fanboying, give respect where its due, all of you. MM was a thing of legend long before u ever heard 'float on'.

And I actually used to like Brand New about 8 years ago when I was 13 - songs like Sic Transit Gloria, The Quiet Things, Jude Law - but I quickly grew out of it, it got too teen angsty for me and just started sounding bland. i think Jesse is one of the most important musicians of our generation. and i think its good that he is SO underrated, one day the world will realise, but untill then. We are all in the know.
mute top string, play frets 10/9, slide down to 5/4, then 3/2 (which is like a C chord). All of these are on the a & D stings respectively. you can add the high-e sting on each of the chords to add little more. This is how I play it and it sounds pretty close.
I think it just shows how humble of an individual that Jesse Lacey is that he's covering modest mouse. I don't think Brand New has turned into Modest Mouse at all, though.
i really hope this doesnt start a whole who is better war between BN and MM. Both bands are great but MM has them beat. BN turned into this sound, MM WERE this sound. and the simple fact that you dont see MM coving BN (jesus christ would be cool to see though)

I don't really think that Isaac is what Jesse is striving to be. Although I believe it's obvious that Brand New has been influenced by MM's earlier recordings. i think this has become my favorite song. the jesse lacey version. no offense to modest mouse, but i think jesse does a better job, not to mention he is a god. maybe i'm biased, but yea. i wish jesse would release an album of covers/duos with kevin devine. that would make my day. make my life.

adrambour that's a pretty ridiculous statement. don't compare isaac brock and jesse lacey please, please. isaac is what jesse strives to be and he definitely isnt there yet. modest mouse redefined indie music, brand new just makes indie/rock/pop whatever music. as for jesse being a terrible songwriter, i agree that he is not, but you can be a shitty songwriter and still sell out shows.

I don't really think that Isaac is what Jesse is striving to be. Although I believe it's obvious that Brand New has been influenced by MM's earlier recordings. Jesse seems to put a bit more emotion into his songs(In my opinion). I would also go as far to say that as of late Jesse's material is much better than Isaac's. Nothing will ever top LCW though.

I completely agree, adrambour. I happen to be at this show and I can tell you that Jesse Lacey owned that stage, regardless of what he was playing. He plays this cover at most shows and obviously loves/respects it and Modest Mouse. Jesse Lacey/Brand New is awesome. Modest Mouse is awesome. period.

It's jesse's cover, consider it his interpretation of a good modest mouse song. He most definitely can and should cover it because he's apparently as big a fan of the song as you are. Jesse will never sound like Isaac, get over it.
