Now i know why i gotta look both ways twice to cross the street with my portugese girlfriend. Cant hate though, she can cook a good meal and provide endless hours of shannans -__-
I saw something similar at a street race. I think if your in the presence of super fast cars doing their thing you should stay well clear in a safe zone. @5:40 Fair play to Tony Pond he did the right thing.
By those days was inevitable the amount of people on the side of the road. Group B was peaking, with the fastest cars ever seen, and everyone wanted to see them live. The portuguese crowd always been one of the more enthusiastic, with lots of people on the side of the road, and I can't blame them for that. Everyone standing there knew that a tragedy could happen, but this could happen everywhere at those days... Missing Group B cars, and missing those Sintra routes!
Where did you get the footage from 3:38 onwards? I remember owning a video about rallying in the 80's I think and that was in it. I would really like to see it again. Thanks.
Today's drivers are not as skilled as the B group ones were, believe me. Controlling a 500BHP rally car is not the same as controlling a 290BHP (+/-) rally car. And it's impossible to avoid something like that. And believe me, I'm portuguese and I know what I'm talking about, and this also happened like 2 years ago with the new Portuguese Driver Armindo Araujo, who hit 3 reporters with his EVO X rally car, and why? Because people still do the same piece of crap, standing in the road.
@fgtxpaco7458ss a skilled driver who's trained for B cars...you ass...would crash and die in today's WRC cars. they ride and drive so much different than each other. open a book, son.
@gvibes69 yes because Delta S4 had minor problems if fixed that could have saved Group B
it wasent just Corsica dont defend the real cause of the Group B bannishment the crowd gave the drivers more work and stress u think it was easy controlling 400+BHP cars without electronic help throuth roads with over 60 stages going 110 mph or 50mph depending on the stages and to anoy the drivers the fans just had to be in there way why u cant be like the Finns they actually stayed in there places
@gvibes69 and to fix the prob all the FIA had to do is remove portugal and italy and spain from the wrc prob solved seems harsh but they dont deserve something they cant handle
As a portuguese i regret this. I was 15 and i was on that place back then... but on the right place (inside corner). We were asking for it. These cars were monsters... but people were insane! Fault or guilt? Yes... i give it 50/50. Insane cars along with insane people gave a bad result. It was too much power. Trees don't go in your way... nevertheless... Toivonen... ahhhh, i'll never forget!
We learned hard with our mistakes... in their memory!
@fgtxpaco7458ss yeahn right and henri toivonen died how? because of portuguese people? he said that group B were MONTERS, almost impossibble to maitain on road.. so i think isnt only the spect.. the cars were dangerous to... 400 plus BHP camon... nowadays they have 300 and sometimes go off like spaceshuttles!

Remember those four people who lost their life and pray for something like this never happen again. R.I.P.
I used to go to many rallys in this era, in the UK if a marshall saw people acting like this he would stop the stage, the course car was a warning of the incoming cars. sadly it was the norm in Spain, Portugal and Italy and people paid the ultimate price. sad but a true fact
I remeber that l was young when happend this accident, and is always so sad when the people die. Unfortunately, l have to say that (l talk like l'm a rally and other cars race driver) that it was not fault about the Group B, but the spectators, and sorry if those died, but they was in a wrong and forbidden zone. :-(
Rally of Portugal used to be the best rally on Earth. The most demanding. The most dangerous. The most spectacular. Yet........ it also had the "worst" fans. A lot of dumb people sitting right in the middle of the road. Regarding this, it's still the most wicked rally ever!
Its a fine line between thrill and safety. Look at the Group B spectators when it went ok, they look like they had the time of their lives. Here we have a wise man talking to dumbass rally fans.
Here in Canary Islands we are trying to get one WRC race, and our first goal is to gain it by making this race safer both to people and drivers. I hope someday we could get that.
if a were a rally driver and see the people standing there like this, I would i refuse to drive! because i dont want to kill people , even if they want it, like the people you see there! why they were there if they didnt want to get hit by a car, its the best place to get hit.
i am portugues and this is not acectable disirespect 2 the drivers 2 the rally and bad for portugal everytime i went 2 the rally i want my safe and respect because off that and many more wee stay without rally for some time and with reason i allready see things i couldnt believe allways the same sheet is like 2 put them selfs in front off a bull worst
@MrRAFAEL3146 this appen went stupid guy want to be hit! i did not have any respect for those who were kill! they wanted this, they search for it! because why did you stand were car passe at full speed and drive always at the limit, its because you want to, went they come over the limit, to come on you!
and thanks to those retarded monkey fucks, Group B Rally disappeared. Ruined because some idiots don't understand a simple principle: DON'T STAY NEAR THE ROAD DUMBASS!
It would be an honour to be run over and killed by a group B rally car. To have my intestines and brain matter smeared across the intercooler of a group B rally car is a defining achievment in life, and one that all should strive for.
@O8SERVER not dumb, there was no boundaries, back then they used to just move out of the way of the rally cars and I agree the spectators shouldn't of been there, but they didn't know it was going to crash out.
my father has been driven rallys himself in the sixties and seventies. when I was a little boy there were so many weekends where we went to look them.
but never we stood so close to the road like here. My father always looked for a save place to watch the circus. this here was absolutly stupid by the spectators.
Dispite of this accident, this rally was the most spectacular of them all.
Portuguese roads are outstanding for rallying, but in those years, those golden years, people were just insane. My own father told me that he once touched a group B car in the middle of the road, the car must have been at least 100 kmp/h. People get crazy when the WRC comes to Portugal, but defenitly, those years of Group B cars were amazing.
And this accident that happened here, could have happened anywhere else.
that just bad if i was there id hate to think that some idiots up the road made a car kill all those people, they were the most psycho spectators ever trying get get as CLOSE to the action as they could unrestricted. some of those people probably thought theyre not going to crash near people as if they had control of stuff like that im just suprised it didnt kill more down to santos's driving and the bug splat effect, ie they must have been packed together
Glorious times of WRC back in 80's with Group B. 400hp+ turbocharged, ligthweight cars passing just one hand from you, definately a lot of adrenaline. But high price to pay for that feeling...
One of the possible solutions would be to allow people to watch from the inside of a bend and not the outside. This way, if the car goes skidding a little too far it'll just go off the road not hitting anyone... i don't think group B soulh come back because it would never be the same as before. Technology has advanced, and it wouldn't be the same cars. I believe that the fact it has dissappeared makes it more appealing, and more of a legend... Lets just keep the good memories...
i really feel sorry for the relatives of the killed persons but i DON´T feel sorry for the killed persons. How stupid can I be to stand soo close to cars. at the age of 5 (my first rallye visit) i allready knew that motorsport is dangerous.
Those people commited suicide and the almost have killed a fantastic sport.
why wasnt there any marshalls keeping everybody away from harm? still to this day i dont understand why nobody could foresee accidents happening like this. seem ridiculous, rally cars vs. people in a confined space.... Car for the win. whether it had 400hp or not it still would have collected people while spinning off the track. thankyou pinhead portugese people from the 80's, great way to fusk up the action.
@mighell They didnt have it comming you stupid clueless peice of shit. This happens in rally today, This was the sports fault, not the innocent men, women AND children that only wanted to go out and see and hear these beautiful machines.
yes it is the peoples fault, you dount stay in the middle of a fucking rally road and except the drivers to go more then100 miles per hour on a 2 meter widht road
Tipical idiotic answer. Blame the drivers and the rallie for idiots standing in the middle of the road. I'm portuguese and truth is i'm surprised this didn't happen sooner. But the spectators are the only ones to blame, wether in Portugal or abroad. And now no rally for anybody.
@mighell Couldn't agree with you more. I don't wan't to sound disrespectful or heartless, but it's downright stupid to stand so close to the road - even when the officials allow you to. I find it disturbing, that even families with young children were standing by the road, ignorant to the fact that 550bhp monsters were drifting by...
It's common to Portuguese people to act like this. Even when there is like a car crash or some accident, there is always a crowd that goes there and just annoy and disturb all kind of rescue operations.
They didn't deserved this, but they should had thought before,
the driver got a good heart, I think he said something like: ''thers no sense anymore at driving with cars with 400+ hp with 120 mph through a gap of people.''
if u ask me these ppl deserved it! wot kind ov idiots stand in the road wen theres a car doing 100+ . this was the reason this sport died, coz ov complete idiots like them. and the poor guy hu was driving... his live would ov been turn'd up side down coz ov them.
it was Group B days probably you wouldn't understand what they had in mind when those 400 plus hp cars passed by at full speed... it was pure adrenaline...
today it wouldn't be like this... other times... but back then imagine the fastest cars on earth and the fastest rally cars ever built passing at full speed right in front of you and you almost could toutch them...
ad the sports die because of the people who wanted to turn it in some kind of machine to make money..
what they should have done was took portugal off the calender, simple.....but i live in the uk and have been to rallies in uk and ireland and people still stand in the wrong place and cross the road in the middle of the stage.
I'm Portugues ..and i've watched live at 86..and yes ...in the midle of the road this amazing machines !! You may not understand ..but the road is the place to be .earing the sound ..the smell ... man can´t describe ... !!you just don´t no shit about rally ..What tard comments like Why let them stay on the racetrack ?? People limit ?? WTF ??? Look retards !! Rally uses real public roads . how do you close miles of public roads?? and the ppl shoud be arrested on their homes ?? LOL
I've stood on the side of many rallies and there is no force on earth that would make me stand in front of one of those cars... Idiots who brought about the end of one of the last remnants of 'proper' motorsport.
What a fantastic era. Cars and drivers on the absolute edge - I can't imagine what speeds these cars must've gotten up to on long straights, but I'll bet it was considerably more than todays wrc cars.
People criticise the crowd and officials for the cancelation of this brilliant sport but I think it was these crowds that made it so great. The onboard vids of the crowds parting meters in front of the car, awesome
No one should be blamed, it was an inevitable accident caused by its popularity.
those poor people! but they should know they are putting themselves at risk when they stand that close to a track with cars flying by at 100mph and could lose control.
the car DIDNT just lose controle @ DANNERatLARGE. 2 spectators stood in the middle of the road so the car had to steer right very hard and fast. therefore the car drove into the crowd. the spectators are responsible that group B is dead -.-
thats true and they should have been more cautious, but you obviously still hold the risk of being killed when your your feet away from a one and a half ton peice of metal going that fast.
I do blame the organizers of the track. The should of placed marshals on some of the more crowded places, to keep the crowd in line. Or do what they do now, rope off the track.
It's a shame for Portugal, that we were banned from Rallys and F1, because of the conditions of the tracks and people. I'm Portuguese and i feel shame. But Argentina always have the same crowd control problems and it still continued having their Rally...
Argentina don't have any crowd control problem at the wrc. I 've been in that rally twice and everything was under control. People know that if they don't follow the rules any prime could be suspended.
During the '86 season there is lots of crashes and kills, the Portuguese rally wasn't the only one with problems of crowd control. Maybe the exception at these times was the rally RAC. I guess that crazy fans and the spectacular stages was a "problem" for "big" countries. As today there is lots of competition not between the drivers/manufacturers but also for the best rally in the world
Now i know why i gotta look both ways twice to cross the street with my portugese girlfriend. Cant hate though, she can cook a good meal and provide endless hours of shannans -__-

You know the difference between XXI. century WRC cars and Group B cars is like a stock STI Impreza and a Ferrari F40 on a race track.

Actually, I believe modern rally cars are posting FASTER times than Group B did. It's all down to technology.

Glorious times of WRC back in 80's with Group B. 400hp+ turbocharged, ligthweight cars passing just one hand from you, definately a lot of adrenaline. But high price to pay for that feeling...
zBoost 2 years ago
@zBoost you got to be ready to pay!
alexfocusracing 1 year ago

Tipical idiotic answer. Blame the drivers and the rallie for idiots standing in the middle of the road. I'm portuguese and truth is i'm surprised this didn't happen sooner. But the spectators are the only ones to blame, wether in Portugal or abroad. And now no rally for anybody.
lgcotovio 1 year ago 3
@mighell Couldn't agree with you more. I don't wan't to sound disrespectful or heartless, but it's downright stupid to stand so close to the road - even when the officials allow you to. I find it disturbing, that even families with young children were standing by the road, ignorant to the fact that 550bhp monsters were drifting by...

It's common to Portuguese people to act like this. Even when there is like a car crash or some accident, there is always a crowd that goes there and just annoy and disturb all kind of rescue operations.
They didn't deserved this, but they should had thought before,

no one deserve to die...
it was Group B days probably you wouldn't understand what they had in mind when those 400 plus hp cars passed by at full speed... it was pure adrenaline...
today it wouldn't be like this... other times... but back then imagine the fastest cars on earth and the fastest rally cars ever built passing at full speed right in front of you and you almost could toutch them...
ad the sports die because of the people who wanted to turn it in some kind of machine to make money..

Malc180s 2 years ago 4
You think so? I am a rally marshal and still have trouble keeping spectators off the outside of bends or the edge of the stage.
toadjust 2 years ago
those poor people! but they should know they are putting themselves at risk when they stand that close to a track with cars flying by at 100mph and could lose control.
DANNERatLARGE 2 years ago
the car DIDNT just lose controle @ DANNERatLARGE. 2 spectators stood in the middle of the road so the car had to steer right very hard and fast. therefore the car drove into the crowd. the spectators are responsible that group B is dead -.-
Fabscher19 2 years ago 2
thats true and they should have been more cautious, but you obviously still hold the risk of being killed when your your feet away from a one and a half ton peice of metal going that fast.
DANNERatLARGE 2 years ago 2
that was disturbing :S
but im sure the ppl is aware of the danger by standing that close to the track..
its stupid.. i feel for the loses byt they had to have it coming..

But Argentina always have the same crowd control problems and it still continued having their Rally...
simeonegattuso 3 years ago 6
Argentina don't have any crowd control problem at the wrc. I 've been in that rally twice and everything was under control. People know that if they don't follow the rules any prime could be suspended.
patolr 3 years ago
During the '86 season there is lots of crashes and kills, the Portuguese rally wasn't the only one with problems of crowd control. Maybe the exception at these times was the rally RAC. I guess that crazy fans and the spectacular stages was a "problem" for "big" countries. As today there is lots of competition not between the drivers/manufacturers but also for the best rally in the world
