  • Hey Great Video! I´m in a situation where i have to do this kind of stuff. I want to externally sync NI Maschine to logic. But the Midi-clock seem to be kind of unstable. Any idea of what could be the problem?? Thx in advance

  • This is great! I have been having a lot of trouble lately with CPU usage. Now things are running much more smoothly.

    Thanks!

  • One final note - apparently VE Pro can do offline bounces! (and so can Bidule when using Rewire)...although there are mixed reports on it...seems it doesn't work correctly with all plugins. This would probably be the best solution if you care about speedy bounces but still need the best possible performance.

  • Great video!

But one important drawback of using standalones is that you have to do real-time bounces ("offline" or non-realtime bounces are the default - and are quicker).

The RAM ceiling can definitely be an issue but as of Logic 9.1 you can now get around this by running the program in 64-bit mode (do a Get Info on the Logic application in the Finder and uncheck "Open in 32-bit mode")

    (continued in my next comment...)

  • (continued..)

So, another option is to use multi-timbral instances of the Play engine (or Kontakt or what have you)...ideally the number of multis you have would equal your number of processors (so in my case since my specs are "2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon" so I use 4 multis). Then, you can still do offline bounces.

The Play engine doesn't perform that well as a plugin so standalone is better for performance, but multis work well for Kontakt.

  • thanks for sharing your knoledge - great tutorials, keep up the good work!

  • HI Dave, Thanks for this video! I've been trying for over a year to get Play to work well with Logic. Looked through many forums trying to get answers why it was overloading my system so quick. I almost gave up on Eastwest and Logic. I try it last night (with much doubt, didn't think it was going to work), but sure enough IT WORKS!!! Thank you so much for this and all the videos you post! Great work Dave!

  • Thanx! ! This made me think of a way of using the IAC Driver to communicate with Mainstage. Will post a video response, keep up the great work.

  • My fellow producer has purchased an axiom pro 49 and I have the original axiom 49...we are going insance with setting it up...do you know where I can get ENIGMA or HYPER EDIT templates I would love to know =) You are a great teacher man, and we thank you.

  • 64 bit woohooo great workaround though:) love your work

  • Hi Dave.

Thanks for all the cool Logic videos you've made to help people out. I have a problem, and I was wondering of you could help.

When I try to record a bass part on an audio track in Logic, I can see the signal registering on the Bass channel strip, but nothing registers on the Stereo Out channel strip. Hence, I cannot hear what I'm recording. Do you have any idea how to fix this?

I've recently installed Soundflower. Could this have something to do with it?

  • Uvi Workstation is looks great. I just don't want that Pace spyware in my system.

  • not sure if anyone in the comments has commented but this RAM limitation is due to logic still being 32bit. once it has been rewritten as 64bit to embrace the new snow leopard 64bit architecture then problems like this will be gone.

  • You can exceed the RAM ceiling by adjusting preference options in the EXS24, but you must have at least 5GB of RAM to do this.

  • Dave,

Appreciate all the help with Logic! Can you comment on how to use Soundflower in Logic? thanks

  • Thats extremely neat Dave - how the devil you find out about this stuff is anyones guess. Thanks again, again.

  • 5/5 awesome video David. This has been unbelievably helpful. Can't wait to see future videos on this subject.

Can you tell us what platform the game is going to be on?

    S.

  • Also is the internal RAM dependent on how much external RAM?

  • Yo Dave!

I see you do a lot of your videos from a studio. Is that a studio that you rent or is that at Pyramind?

  • It's Pyramind. I have a studio upstairs called 'The Loft'

  • Thanks. Is that because it's upstairs?

  • i am sensing a little comedy here going on as well - LOVE it !

  • Yay! You kinda saved my life! :D

    Thank you!

  • hey David, how r u?, thanks for your videos i´ve been learning a lot from them and i have one question for you where did u get your desktop background from?, i love it, if u could tell me where i can get it i would really appreciate it, thanks, keep up the good work.

  • Hey Ninja! :) do you know a software like soundflower for XP iam still with a PC for now.. thanks youtube friend.. ^.^

  • Hi David,

Just found your videos...and I'm loving them! Your explanation of sidechaining was so stinkin' easy to understand (someone else recently tried explaining it to me and struggled at it...or I struggled to understand).

I'm interested to hear your upcoming review of the Axiom Pro.

Very eager to get either the Axiom Pro or the Akai MPK49 (...or something else for studio/stage?).

I've had some very bad experiences, though, with M-Audio in the past...mostly because of crappy drivers!

  • hi ninja! i read that m-audio hasn't updated their Axiom Pro 61 drivers for snow leopard yet. i've already updated to snow leopard, so do you recommend waiting til they are updated?

  • Thanks for the tip! I had been using soundflower and Max/MSP to route midi (and also perform custom transforms on midi data... i just happen to know max/MSP better than logic's environment) up until now. IAC will definitely smooth that out. thx!

  • what can you use to free up Ram? whats Flux btw?

  • Flux is my laptop. I call my old tower at home Aeon.

    I am a geek.

Ram is allocated very well among most plugins in Logic. It is the 3rd party plugins that you need to worry about.

    *bows*

  • Great stuff! Of course Kontakt 3.5 and above can do something similar from within Logic now using Kontakt Memory Server, and VEPro works (so far!) beautifully not only on the same computer but with additional computers connected via gigabit ethernet (with no additional audio card necessary on the extra computers)...It would be nice if Logic had their own solution though! (can we say "64 bit"?)..

    ddjack

  • Amen.

  • Great info in this vid, Soundflowerbed is awesome too. It makes it quick and easy to record samples from any source (Youtube vids, DVD movies, etc..) if that's the kind of music you're making.

  • Great video David Earl! Another great option is using plogue bidule, which is an all in one solution to routing midi, and sending it to the Logic Mix Bus. A lot of composers use it.

  • Yep, it's also a current fav among the gaming community.

  • Wow! this seemed very advanced for the average Logic user.. so lost. Makes you constantly realize how daunting a program this is. Great intuitive videos though as always DE. thanks.

  • Hey there SF logic Ninja!!

Can't wait to see how the east west play engine can be used as stand alone & re wired back into Logic.

I do film scores, my style is- heavy orchestral stuff with modern grooves (like John Powell). Logic starts quitting on me, when i use the EW play engine So this trick of using the play engine as stand alone, to lessen the burden on the CPU sounds like a Kick Ass idea!!

Thanks SF Logic Ninja. Keep em comin.

    God Bless. Cheers!!

  • I see you are using Screenflow... That's what I use to make videos like this!

  • nice one dave (axiom pro)

i love your (axiom pro set up..pleeeeze) videos

i hope you will (axiom) post (61 set up) some more soon

you are an inspiration (how do i configure the axiom pro with logic 9)

    cheers

    (axiom pro set up)

    knock!

im excited to see your game though in all seriousness.

And the best of luck with it mate.

  • I'm working out the kinks still, and need to really decide wheter or not I'm all head over heels with this. It might be messing with my Logic control, and I'm trying to figure out whether it's a Logic control, coremidi, or hypercontrol issue. I use it every day, but these little niggling problems are keeping me from showing it off until I locate where the problem lies. Gimme a week. *bows*

  • Cool video again . Answered the qustions I sent you in the email!! Nice! How many ports do you suggest adding with regards to PLAY EastWest stuff. I am doing the large scale orchestral/film thing as well and was curious to how many you setup for your setup. Might saves me some trial and error time. thanks SF

  • I use 4 ports for the PLAY engine.

    The first 3 I actually USE!!! :-o

It's really incredible. Changed my entire writing style. I'll try to show the orchestral template later... It's on the octacore, which has no camera to play with.. :-(

  • nice tips! iam using a lot big plug-in eating my CPU like Vienna Strings & Arturia Emulation of vintage synth.. in Ableton & Protools.. i will try that..

  • Thanks DE! Now get a haircut!

  • nnNNNNNnnnnnNNnnooOOoOOooOOOOOoooOOoooo.

My hair is the best indicator to others of my current mental state. If it is cut, people could get hurt...

  • what kind camera is that its real clear

  • Camera is built-in isight on a MacBook Pro.

The screen capture is done with screenflow...

  • I think that was one of the SFLN vids I have to watch a couple of times before i can understand. Although one of the hot girls from work heard me listen to it, so she must think I'm a genius. Keep up the good work :P

  • Stoked that you're still making videos Dave! And I'm glad that you're getting into talking about orchestral composition, because that's exactly what I'll be getting into over the next couple years.. So one interested listener over here (not that I wouldn't be interested anyway).

  • Don't apologize in your video. You know we are not worthy of such brilliant tutorials & lessons you give complimentary. I have utilized your videos so much. I think "I'm not sure how this works, but I know of a tutorial which shows it for me."

You are THE manual. Your work is great. Thank you.

  • dude you look like you haven´t come out of the cave dude your have bags in your eyes mahaaahaahahaah

  • great video. i always appreciate to listen to someone who actually knows what he talks about. waiting for the second one to come out... thanks.

  • your intro speech gets me everytime xD

  • haha, this is exactly what I was having a problem with. thanks man, looking forward to seeing a demo of a practical application

  • Its always a blessing to see Ninja back in action!

  • it better be for XBOX 360!!!

  • it is.

    *bows*

  • its painful how tired you look dude. keep up the good work.

  • Aw, don't suffer on my account. I know I look haggard, but this was the one and only time I had to get this out, and it's really important to a lot 'o folks. I knew damn well what I was getting into by pursuing a life in music. Heh Thanks for the support, tho!

  • yay ninjaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • nice on dude!
