I don't know what you're using for your drive, sounds like the amps gain... but you should check out some OD pedals like a dirty little secret, ocd, tim, or even an M13 is a great multi effects unit.
awesome vid, dont get me wrong i like the blues but im sick of seeing the exact same video of some guy playing the blues on a (semi)hollowbody...i get it the guitar can play the blues, i wanna see what else it can do, thanks for the review!
my brother has an epiphone dot 335 and i play it through my mesa rectifier and it sounds awesome. i have a knock off aria version that sounds more metal than most metal guitars. its what the guitar and the amp can do, not what people say it was meant to do.
Don't fucking piss all over your gear by running into a Boss multi-effects pedal. Get individual stomp boxes (or just run it dry) and let that Marshall SING!
The ES-339 sound is really interesting.... does things a les paul can't... neither the favored les paul jr ...or the SG.... it certainly is an interesting piece of lutherie.... seems to have its own niche as a nice compact semi-hollow....
in theory this video was good but the distortion was up wayyyy to high and you could have chose better songs to demonstrate how it could take the distortion so i think you should make another video and make it better for all the haters
for pedals.. just shell out the money for single effect stompboxes.. they make single delays for $400+ for a reason.. so it shouldn't be emulated. it is what is. same with all mods and distortion/fuzz/OD. electro-harmonix, pigtronix, zvex, moog, bbe, mxr, list goes on..
You CAN use this guitar for rock so you have a fair point with this video. But this just sounds awful. Thin, weedy, harsh, bleh. I've had a go on one of these and through a good tube amp overdrive they can sound really thick and beefy for rock playing. This video's just a poor example to use

i thought this was gonna suck until you started playing fall of troy lol. But honestly those style guitars are not easy to play anything other than blues and jazz...for that you got talent man.
I think I'd rather listen to some blues played with this guitar, because regardless of what you try to prove ...here it sounds like shit. But I think it is not a guitar but rather this boss effect. Guitar is GREAT and is perfect for any kind of music you want. It depends on your fingers. But some effects are just for nothing. Greetings

@rjworks13 If it makes you stop whining... I don't play that kind of rock anymore. This video was uploaded over two years ago. Or, did you not notice? Secondly, I sold that Boss ME-50 like 10 days after I put this up and the only gain I use is from a Fulltone OCD pedal. Also, I got rid of the Marshall (the source of most of the shitty tone) and got a vintage handwired VOX AC30 Custom with AlNiCo Blue speakers. So, stop complaining. It's a fucking youtube video. :-)
@Weston1217 Haha... not complaining or whining chief - just messing with you man. Of course this is youtube. Didn't expect you to be so thin-skinned. Yeah, I have a VOX AC15 myself for home recording and small gigs - should have got the AC30 though. Your right, never cared for Marshals myself. I went through two and ended up with a Hiwatt. I've been playing through the Hiwatt 50R over 20 years (through various 4x12s) and it breaks up nice without getting shrill on me.
@rjworks13 It was a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL... I think they've already been discontinued. The thing that bothered me most about it was that nearly every guitar that I plugged into it and played on the clean channel sounded exactly the same. No tonal difference. I needed to mature as a musician before I went out and bought all new (or in my case vintage) gear. It's funny, a lot of these negative comments are like "your guitar sounds like shit." And I think "Ah! I know now!" haha
I don't see the big problem. It sounds great with any genre of music like Gibson intended it to. Just cause a few famous people play a 339 and 335's for blues doesn't mean you need to conform to that style. Would you tell Keith Urban to stop playing a Les Paul and go to a Telecaster for everything he does?
@TadRapidly - I'm wondering what generation your parents came from? As for Sabbath... Tony Iommi is an exceptional lead guitarist (especially considering he is missing fingers on his left hand). Now if you want to talk about the horrendous vocals of Ozzy Osborne, I couldn't agree more.
@rjworks13 My parents don't particularly listen to music. They play the radio every now and then but I don't think they care for certain artists. However my mom did go to a Pink Floyd concert when she was a teenager. Pretty bad ass if you ask me.
@rjworks13 my folks were 45 when I was 15 so they were decidedly NOT sabbath-friendly. Ozzy's vocals are awesome as well as Iommi's riffs. Better keep that anti-Ozzy sentiment to a minimum! Shhh.
@TadRapidly - Sorry to hear your parents were anti sabbath man. I saw the original Sabbath in 74 (dating myself), and again in 82 with Ian Gillan singing lead. Gillian was better by far. Iommi gave amazing solo performances both times. I followed Sabbath through the years and please believe me, Iommi is Sabbath, not Ozzy. All my friends know I loath Ozzy and they give me a hard time about it. I don't really care either way. Can't stand his voice.
Hey, thanks for showing a demo for this guitar using something other than bluse music; I know exactly what you are talking about. I've been looking at this guitar for a while and could never hear anything besides the same bluse music in videos. Thank you for this.
I've just bought one of these guitars; I use lighter strings than you usually find on semis (9.5 - 44) and it does everything I ask of it. I don't see why I should save it only for blues or jazz if it's capable of other things. It's a versatile guitar and I plan to maximise its potential.
Finally...someone who tries to get a different sound out of a one trick pony. I love this guitar and looking to add it to my collection. Huge Gibson fan and my Les Paul needs a friend.
I LOVE THIS GUITAR MAN!! :D AND I DIG THAT CABINET!! A NICE MULTI EFFECTS PEDAL WOULD BE A BOSS ME-20. I HAVE ONE AT HOME AND IT'S HOT! :D =))) CHEERS BRO!
I'm just pootling around looking at 339 vids and arrived here. You really seem to have got some peoples' backs up and I can't see why.The playing seems pretty good and the sounds are excellent....Good job all round.
That guitar is crying because of what you put it through and it's hurting inside; you can't hear it though because the crappy music's too loud. Poor thing... ;(
I choose guitars based on how well I think their feel/sound complements my style, not on whether or not its a blues guitar or an altrock guitar. That's stupid. The player makes the genre, not the guitar. Also, I think every genre sounds better through vintage style guitars, so great choice on that ES-339.
@beebuzzleable This is the best, most level headed comment I think I've ever read on youtube. The fact that some people think there are rules(?) to music makes me think they just don't get it. To say you can't use this guitar for a genre of music is like telling an artist they can't use the color blue in a painting. If it works it works.
@Weston1217 love it dude. for christs sake dave grohl had his own signature es335 and he rocks the hell out of it. i used to play in a metal/hardcore band and used a 72 thinline at times. i like the tone a semi hollow or hollowbody can give out sometime. just play the guitar how you want to because thats what its meant for.
All you guys ripping this chap are kind of missing the point; there's no such thing as a certain guitar for a certain kind of music. If the guy wants to play an ES-339 for high-gain stuff, it's his prerogative; let's not forget the explosive musical mayhem created by a certain Mr Jimi Hendrix, on a Fender Stratocaster, no less.
thanks you for the rock review! very cool, what's my age again. That's the stuff I'm into. And I hear you, I get tired of all the blues reviews, so thanks for posting this. i will now sub.
Cool with enough distortion I can make my Les Pauls sound just as noisy, nothing wrong with your playing or guitar but how you make your assessment upon other players, having bluesy sound when they care very much about their tone, rather than drowning it out with distortion and effects, its seems kinda of out of place for you to take a well "blues" guitar and say its not for blues, hey call Izzy Stradlin for advice on doing some rock with that baby, cause he knows how. Peace Man keep rockin
the reason why most guitar demos are blues/jazz/southern rock stuff is because the clean tone shows the true tone of the guitar a lot more than adding tons of gain. Every guitar would sound just about the same with that amount of distortion.
Dude, I know its old and I hope you still don't play this shit, cause this is painful to watch an ES go through this. And also fucking pop rock is shit and new metal.
I see you are trying to have an edge or something. Real cute buddy. I don't think you are really a douchebag however, just kinda came off that way. Checked out your project on myspace, pretty neat, keep it up sir.
check out some old Rush stuff - Alex Lifeson used an ES 335 on their first few albums. these things sound great for heaier stuff. BTW, yr original stuff sounds kinda like Taking Back Sunday except with much bigger balls and without the whiny crap!
Oh shit he pulled out some tfot on a 339 was not expecting it, but exactly what I was looking for. I'm torn between the 339 and the traditional pro at the moment, I really love what I'm hearing from both, haven't been able to find anywhere to play a 339 yet though.
Hey Weston, a good piece of advice is to not talk down about CLASSIC bands who are LEGENDS when you cant even properly play the noise you call Rock and Roll. Sarcastic douche bag.
Nice video. Thanks for showing a bit more range with a semi-hollow and having some fun with it. Best of luck with your band by the way, and try to keep brushing off the douche bag critiques. Your sound was fine (although the OCD probably sounds more natural with that setup than the Boss). But thanks, it was much appreciated (yes, I'm considering a Heritage Prospect and was actually trying to check out some more overdriven or diverse sounds through this type of guitar)!
Laces Out, Dan! Love TFOT! Wasn't expecting to hear that. Doesn't anyone else appreciate a amazing modern guitarist like Thomas Erak! Any ways good job man and looking to get one of those in the future.
Hehe, THANK YOU for not playing horrendous white man blues on that thing. I hate it that people seem to think these guitars are exclusively for that, when they can do do much more.
the look of the guitar may not fit per say because people have logged it as a blues jazz guitar and metal has taken on the "evil, mean, harsh" type look although sounding good because of the hum bucking pickups and the versatility of a Gibson all hes saying is that u cant categorize a guitar by its look and say its crap because its "look" doesn't fit your genre good playing by the way
the look of the guitar may not fit persay because people have logged it as a blues jazz guitar and metal hase taken on the "evil, mean, harsh" type look although sounding good because of the hum bucking pickups and the versatility of a gibson all hes saying is that u cant categorize a guitar by its look and say its crap because its "look" doesn't fit your genre good playing by the way
Your playing style and attitude screams "I don't give a damn."
I fucking love it. Keep it up, man. That guitar gives a great sound for everything you've played so far. Sounds very versatile. I might get myself one.
@murdoches I actually haven't ran into any terrible feedback situation yet.. I use a Fulltone OCD pedal now which I love.. it has kind of an "arctic monkeys/white stripes" crunch sound
it's a semi hollow, de middle of the guitar is solid, and the sides are two hollow chambers. This will give you the sound of a hollow body without excessive feedback
Like I said in the video.. its not that I don't play the guitar for what it is "used for" [whatever that means] I just wanted to play different things on it
@Weston1217 First off, Skynyrd will always be cooler than Blink, AND your shitty finger-tapping. Second, It means you use the guitar for the tone its designed for. Hollowbody guitars are not designed for crunch and distorion and metal bullshit. They're made for the notes to resonate fully, henceforth why they're popular for blues and jazz, genres that truly CARE about quality of sound. That really is a blasphemous waste of an ES. Buy a Jackson or Ibanez and stop wasting Gibson's...............
@JHKFENDER86 Sorry buddy, but the day that I take music as seriously as you do is the day that I quit being a professional musician. It's a youtube video...
@Weston1217 Dude I'm not saying you're a bad player. Came off overly critical, which was misguided, you're right. But if you ARE a "professional musician," you SHOULD take it seriously. I'm no "pro" man. But I love the blues, and I've played a while, and I know what guitars are needed to accomplish that tone. BB's played an ES since the 60's dude. It just is a waste to play it so heavy. I have a super nice Fender USA Fat strat I'll trade you straight across. Lol......keep doin' your thing man.
@JHKFENDER86 Thanks for being constructive. Haha. I should point out that this video is 2 years old and I have totally moved on from pop punk sounding songs. Also, I use a boutique Matchless amp and literally threw the distortion pedal I had in this video in the trash. I now use a Fulltone OCD (crunch) style of pedal. Plus, I like blues a lot. I was making a crack at the generic atypical guitar demo video. Not meaning to bash anyone.
@Weston1217 Dude I checked out your "Rockin...What else" video, and whats pretty humorous is that Fat Strat I somewhat jokingly offered to trade is literally the exact same color scheme as yours, with that light teal kinda color and the reflective style pickguard, 22 fret rosewood. It has a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbucker at the bridge. Sounds great, especially heavier like you play in that vid. Thought that was kinda funny. You could have a matching set. Haha. Keep rockin bro.............
@JHKFENDER86 Haha that's too funny. Especially since that Fender is totally different now. I took out the Seymour Duncan and now it has a Phat Cat P-90 in the neck and a Seymour Duncan SH1 '59 in the bridge. Plus it has a mint green (off-white) pickguard. Anyway, if you want to hear both guitars check out (reverbnation[dot]com[slash]somecamerunning)... youtube doesn't allow you to post websites. The one without vocals is the fender. With vocals is the gibson. Feedback would be awesome!!
@Weston1217 Nice! That P-90 is a nice pickup, and I have the exact same set of SH1 '59's that I bought and put in my Les Paul. God damn they sound sweet. Checked your songs. You've definitely progressed as far as playing and attention to sound man. I dig the old school kinda vibe of "Higher," and I especially dig your buddies drumwork. Gotta admit your bandname is fairly creative too. Noticed you do solo shows. You play acoustic for those? If so, I'm curious what gear on that front?
@JHKFENDER86 Thanks for the nice words! For live acoustic shows I usually will play through a boutique VOX 30 watt with a mic'd Takamine. I also use a Boss RC-20XL loop station and a M-Audio keyboard with a built in drum machine. It's cool cause I can basically play acoustic, piano and drums at once by myself. What kinda gear do you use live? Anything you can't live without? I'm kinda a gear whore when I can afford it.... saving for an Electro-Harmonix POG right now.
@Weston1217 Here dude. Truce. Just check out this video. Look up BB King and Gary Moore "The Thrill is Gone." BB is a legend and a genius, and Gary stuns him. Blues man. Blues. Feel the soul in it man. The foundation................
@joeo804 Jealous Much? He is playing and enjoying it, that's about all any non-Guitar Super Star can hope for. He's maybe not Vai, Clapton, Hendrix (Pick your hero) but IMHO it's about enjoying what you play.
Good on you for posting this, I play hard rock and alt on a 335 copy and a bit softer stuff on a Gretsch 5120. It's cool to see that sort of stuff on semihollows as it's nice to see how hard you can push certain guitars before they shit the bed from feedback.
Dude - you do an awesome job of making a 339 through a Marshall half stack sound like a BC Rich Warlock played through an 80's model Peavy solid state amp!! Way to go!!!!!
I realize this is your guitar and your prerogative to play it as you choose, but quite honestly, this is not the kind of music the ES339 was designed for- think Larry Carlton, John Scofield, Eric Johnson, BB King, Muddy Waters, Scott Henderson etc.
@lydianfreak Actually, the ES series was designed for Jazz. So, according to your logic, if you're not playing Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery, you're playing it wrong. The beauty of these guitars is their versatility. I say: if it works for you, go for it. After all, Ted Nugent played a freakin' Gibson Byrdland!

That guitar is crying because of what you put it through and it's hurting inside; you can't hear it though because the crappy music's too loud. Poor thing... ;(
CalenCoffman 11 months ago
I choose guitars based on how well I think their feel/sound complements my style, not on whether or not its a blues guitar or an altrock guitar. That's stupid. The player makes the genre, not the guitar. Also, I think every genre sounds better through vintage style guitars, so great choice on that ES-339.
vecinto 1 year ago 3
@beebuzzleable This is the best, most level headed comment I think I've ever read on youtube. The fact that some people think there are rules(?) to music makes me think they just don't get it. To say you can't use this guitar for a genre of music is like telling an artist they can't use the color blue in a painting. If it works it works.
Weston1217 1 year ago 10
@Weston1217 love it dude. for christs sake dave grohl had his own signature es335 and he rocks the hell out of it. i used to play in a metal/hardcore band and used a 72 thinline at times. i like the tone a semi hollow or hollowbody can give out sometime. just play the guitar how you want to because thats what its meant for.

All you guys ripping this chap are kind of missing the point; there's no such thing as a certain guitar for a certain kind of music. If the guy wants to play an ES-339 for high-gain stuff, it's his prerogative; let's not forget the explosive musical mayhem created by a certain Mr Jimi Hendrix, on a Fender Stratocaster, no less.

gay, a baby could play better than you, plus a 339 is a blues fucking guitar, deal with it
01Lolocaust10 1 year ago
@01Lolocaust10
A 325 is also a blues guitar. kings of leon did not use it for blues- its a 72 model.
If you change some rules and maybe use this for playing black metal - you will get a unique sound.
there are no manuals for this , even though you try to put out a "follow the heard" line by your statement.

Peace Man keep rockin

madamkirk 1 year ago
the reason why most guitar demos are blues/jazz/southern rock stuff is because the clean tone shows the true tone of the guitar a lot more than adding tons of gain. Every guitar would sound just about the same with that amount of distortion.

Hey Weston, a good piece of advice is to not talk down about CLASSIC bands who are LEGENDS when you cant even properly play the noise you call Rock and Roll. Sarcastic douche bag.
jrguitar57 1 year ago
Nice video. Thanks for showing a bit more range with a semi-hollow and having some fun with it. Best of luck with your band by the way, and try to keep brushing off the douche bag critiques. Your sound was fine (although the OCD probably sounds more natural with that setup than the Boss). But thanks, it was much appreciated (yes, I'm considering a Heritage Prospect and was actually trying to check out some more overdriven or diverse sounds through this type of guitar)!

the look of the guitar may not fit per say because people have logged it as a blues jazz guitar and metal has taken on the "evil, mean, harsh" type look although sounding good because of the hum bucking pickups and the versatility of a Gibson all hes saying is that u cant categorize a guitar by its look and say its crap because its "look" doesn't fit your genre good playing by the way

but for a hollow body on high gain stuff wouldnt it feedback like crazy?
murdoches 1 year ago
@murdoches I actually haven't ran into any terrible feedback situation yet.. I use a Fulltone OCD pedal now which I love.. it has kind of an "arctic monkeys/white stripes" crunch sound
Weston1217 1 year ago
@murdoches the 339 doesnt feedback to badly because it is semi-hollow, not completely hollow
DDInDaHouse187 1 year ago
@murdoches
it's a semi hollow, de middle of the guitar is solid, and the sides are two hollow chambers. This will give you the sound of a hollow body without excessive feedback
Guitarvirtuoso666 1 year ago
@murdoches i have the same guitar as well. Gibson designed it to have very low feedback even though it is a semi-hollow body

Like I said in the video.. its not that I don't play the guitar for what it is "used for" [whatever that means] I just wanted to play different things on it
Weston1217 1 year ago
@Weston1217 First off, Skynyrd will always be cooler than Blink, AND your shitty finger-tapping. Second, It means you use the guitar for the tone its designed for. Hollowbody guitars are not designed for crunch and distorion and metal bullshit. They're made for the notes to resonate fully, henceforth why they're popular for blues and jazz, genres that truly CARE about quality of sound. That really is a blasphemous waste of an ES. Buy a Jackson or Ibanez and stop wasting Gibson's...............
JHKFENDER86 1 year ago
@JHKFENDER86 Sorry buddy, but the day that I take music as seriously as you do is the day that I quit being a professional musician. It's a youtube video...
Weston1217 1 year ago
@Weston1217 Dude I'm not saying you're a bad player. Came off overly critical, which was misguided, you're right. But if you ARE a "professional musician," you SHOULD take it seriously. I'm no "pro" man. But I love the blues, and I've played a while, and I know what guitars are needed to accomplish that tone. BB's played an ES since the 60's dude. It just is a waste to play it so heavy. I have a super nice Fender USA Fat strat I'll trade you straight across. Lol......keep doin' your thing man.
JHKFENDER86 1 year ago
@JHKFENDER86 Thanks for being constructive. Haha. I should point out that this video is 2 years old and I have totally moved on from pop punk sounding songs. Also, I use a boutique Matchless amp and literally threw the distortion pedal I had in this video in the trash. I now use a Fulltone OCD (crunch) style of pedal. Plus, I like blues a lot. I was making a crack at the generic atypical guitar demo video. Not meaning to bash anyone.
Weston1217 1 year ago
@Weston1217 Dude I checked out your "Rockin...What else" video, and whats pretty humorous is that Fat Strat I somewhat jokingly offered to trade is literally the exact same color scheme as yours, with that light teal kinda color and the reflective style pickguard, 22 fret rosewood. It has a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbucker at the bridge. Sounds great, especially heavier like you play in that vid. Thought that was kinda funny. You could have a matching set. Haha. Keep rockin bro.............
JHKFENDER86 1 year ago
@JHKFENDER86 Haha that's too funny. Especially since that Fender is totally different now. I took out the Seymour Duncan and now it has a Phat Cat P-90 in the neck and a Seymour Duncan SH1 '59 in the bridge. Plus it has a mint green (off-white) pickguard. Anyway, if you want to hear both guitars check out (reverbnation[dot]com[slash]somecamerunning)... youtube doesn't allow you to post websites. The one without vocals is the fender. With vocals is the gibson. Feedback would be awesome!!
Weston1217 1 year ago
@Weston1217 Nice! That P-90 is a nice pickup, and I have the exact same set of SH1 '59's that I bought and put in my Les Paul. God damn they sound sweet. Checked your songs. You've definitely progressed as far as playing and attention to sound man. I dig the old school kinda vibe of "Higher," and I especially dig your buddies drumwork. Gotta admit your bandname is fairly creative too. Noticed you do solo shows. You play acoustic for those? If so, I'm curious what gear on that front?
JHKFENDER86 1 year ago
@JHKFENDER86 Thanks for the nice words! For live acoustic shows I usually will play through a boutique VOX 30 watt with a mic'd Takamine. I also use a Boss RC-20XL loop station and a M-Audio keyboard with a built in drum machine. It's cool cause I can basically play acoustic, piano and drums at once by myself. What kinda gear do you use live? Anything you can't live without? I'm kinda a gear whore when I can afford it.... saving for an Electro-Harmonix POG right now.
Weston1217 1 year ago
@Weston1217 Here dude. Truce. Just check out this video. Look up BB King and Gary Moore "The Thrill is Gone." BB is a legend and a genius, and Gary stuns him. Blues man. Blues. Feel the soul in it man. The foundation................

Good on you for posting this, I play hard rock and alt on a 335 copy and a bit softer stuff on a Gretsch 5120. It's cool to see that sort of stuff on semihollows as it's nice to see how hard you can push certain guitars before they shit the bed from feedback.
talon582 1 year ago
Dude - you do an awesome job of making a 339 through a Marshall half stack sound like a BC Rich Warlock played through an 80's model Peavy solid state amp!! Way to go!!!!!
lifternate 1 year ago
I realize this is your guitar and your prerogative to play it as you choose, but quite honestly, this is not the kind of music the ES339 was designed for- think Larry Carlton, John Scofield, Eric Johnson, BB King, Muddy Waters, Scott Henderson etc.
lydianfreak 1 year ago
@lydianfreak Actually, the ES series was designed for Jazz. So, according to your logic, if you're not playing Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery, you're playing it wrong. The beauty of these guitars is their versatility. I say: if it works for you, go for it. After all, Ted Nugent played a freakin' Gibson Byrdland!
