@mrsoundwave Eddie Hazel was NEVER upstaged by Michael Hampton or Blackbird. Where did you read that bullshit, from wikipedia? Hampton ENTIRE career was playing Eddie's songs. If you knew Eddie's sound you would know that Eddie is playing lead on this song until the speed metal part. Any REAL fan of Eddie Hazel would know this! So THINK before you talk shit about the greatest funk guitarist that ever lived!!!
You're partially right. Mike & Byrd DID NOT upstage Eddie but Eddie is not taking the lead here Mike is. This is Mike's signature interpretation but you can hear Eddie and Byrd flavoring in the background. Eddie could never do the same solo twice but Mike sorta does. Listen close to the incredible background guitar comping. A lot of it IS Eddie.
Wow, This brings me back. I worked for the Allstars on this tour. Did bernies keys. Eddie playing a flying V, Mike his B.C. Rich. Blackbyrd his Strat. Lige on Bass.
The absolute best version of Maggot Brain! Dennis is losing his mind on those drums! I have to listen to this daily or my day is not going to go well!
at this point MH has had enough practice! this is good, but it will never top Eddie's many versions. MH can't put the depth in the song that Eddie did.
in the landover md 1984 video where they are both playing, you can see Eddie f*ckin with MH (in a good way). I like seeing them do the song together; eventually Eddie does something flashy and MH just laughs. I'm glad they got along so well.
i have the original cassete from this the best p funk gig ever dennis chamber at his best so much talent george clintons a mind freek god bless them all
p funk was confusing likie that only george clinton would put all his guitar players in 1 mix it mike who would start off first then eddie would come in or sometimes it was eddie who would start off and mike would come it with byrd playing rhytym.
Too true! DC killed the kit during this set and I love how prominent he is in the mix. First time I played the CD back when, I actually stopped the player during "Cosmic Slop," as if I'd had a musical orgasm...it was almost too intense..!
I asked Dennis Chambers who played lead on this version and according to him, it's Michael playing lead for the first part of the song and Eddie is going off in the background and comes in around the 4'15'' mark.
you guys got it all wrong.....this is Eddie Hazel on the lead, with Blackbird and Michael Hampton in support. This "blistering" rendition of Maggot Brain is Eddie at his finest....
i agree with chiknfulio. there will never be another version as good as eddie hazel. eddie hazel was david gilmore, jimi hendrix, and a whole lot of funk shook up in a bag.
i'll second that! eddie and his music sure put something on me, too!
I wish everyone could have seen eddie do maggot brain up-close and live. those notes go in your ear, make their way through your head and body until you feel like you ARE eddie hazel. it's very surreal.
I'm not too much a fan of Michael Hampton, I respect the hell out of him, but I'm not too much a fan. This is a good version of Maggot Brain, but I'm sorry, it doesn't compare to the original. Michael Hampton doesn't play with any emotion, he plays maggot brain like a guitar song, which it is not. Its a good version though, just not to be compared with the original
if you read guitar mag, eddie hazel said it was a tribute to hendrix

Dennis played drums on this gig.

@btx109, 'Dennis played drums on this gig', that's the understatement of the century! Especially on Cosmic Slop from the same concert.

The torch was started by the God name Jimi Hendrix. Can you imagine what Hendrix could of done with Maggot Brain ?
PREZ150 2 years ago
The fantastic thing about this version is Eddie having fun in the background as only he can

Yeah. It's really great. Michael Hampton is the don. The man. But Eddie Hazel's Maggot Brain is a slab of unrepeatable genius.
