i really enjoy the tone of this pedal, but the only concern i have is that there may be an audible "click" when the pedal is engaged/disengaged... reference 4:09.. am i just hearing things or is that click actually there
@christherock101 - Sometimes static build-up inside a switch causes an audible pop. This is true of any true bypass pedal with this type of switch. Actuating the switch a handful of times before playing will get rid of the static and the pop sound. Thanks!
I have two issues with this pedal, the line in/out are placed in really stupid places, and the LED, while pretty, is just stupidly bright, other than that, I'm glad I own it, it sounds great.
I'd love for PGS to help me out with this, but anybody who knows would be a great help. I am trying to choose between this pedal and the regular version. I love the grit that this pedal adds, but it seems to color the tone severely and it doesn't seem that there is a way to get a clean tone w/out rolling back most of the dials, unlike the original. Can I get transparent sounds from this thing without it sounding overdriven, or is that just a natural aspect of the germanium transistors?
@rufiopan1 - We have our Deluxe set just on the edge where it breaks up. That may be what your hearing. This pedal is capable of a very clean, compressed tone, depending on your amp settings. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.
it's incredibly refreshing to hear radiohead on a pedal demo. i know i'm in the minority here, but i get quite tired of the pentatonic/blues based stuff.
What's that strange sound you can hear on clean long notes, especially 4:10-4:40?
Doesn't sound like a normal comp hiss. This seems like a great pedal, especially the sustain, but if it adds some unnatural character on clean sounds I think it's just not worth it.
I've been playing for 6 years and I STILL have trouble understanding what a compressor really does. Whatever this one does though, it sounds like it's doing it phenominally well.
@Paweljarski basically it squashes your guitar signal , bring up the low ends and hence " tightening them " and pulling down your high frequencies so it is a more compressed signal strand .. if that makes any sense haha
So, this is a limited edition version of the pedal, right? How long is it in production for because I really want one of these but have a few other pedals I want to get first.
I actually love u andy ur a big radiohead fan just like me u demo the best quality pedals and u are really good at guitar and u are reallyt gooD at demos u give people wat u wanna hear ur just simply AWESOME
I just bought the original philosopher's tone pedal and have it front of a stock ts9, and I love it. Over the years I have tried a few compression pedals including the Keeley, Boss, and Dunlop, and this pedal by far is the best compressor i have used. it is really punchy and gives great sustain. I can get a very Trey Anastasio feel out of it. You will get some feedback but I feel if you know how to control it and use it the right way the feedback is never a problem.
This is has nothing to do with the pedal but I'm just curious about the strat your using, more specifically the pickups. Are those stock or are they upgraded. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me because I really want new PU's for my strat and the ones in the first example sound unbelievable. Thanks man
I just got this pedal in the mail the other day, and haven't been to happy with it. Im getting CRAZY feedback when the sustain and blend are at only 12 o'clock (this is with a tubescreamer) and im getting a pop every time i hit my first note. i dont know what the problem is....could it be because im playing with a solid state amp? (i just got all my gear stolen )
@MDelgadoification - On the contrary, compressors are perfect for solid state amps. Tube amps have a natural compression ( the byproduct of saturated tubes), which is one of the reasons why a lot of people like them. Solid state amps don't have that characteristic. Putting a good compressor in front of a solid state amp can give you back some of that "punch".
The grit - does it add drive to the dry or compressed signal. Or to ask a different way, does the grit knob become inactive at either hard left or hard right ends of the blend knob? Thanks!
why did they put the input and output on the same side of the pedal right next to each other? Major inconvenience if you want to put it on your pedalboard
Hey PGS, great demo as usual. This pedal requires it's own 15v power supply, correct? does this ship with it's own power supply? i have a visual sound onespot which i'm guessing will not work
I had the ordinary version. Didn't work for me... incredibly squishy, to a degree that was so unnatural I didn't like - it also had a weird envelope after the initial note that some other people noticed, too. Plus, the blend knob was never as good as, say, the one in the Barber Tone Press... (very different animal, of course).
Agreed. The Philosophers Tone got some really bad reviews and ended up not being popular at all. I had it myself as well, and I had the same problem you had (and a lot of other users did as well!).
@DemoColorScheme This really isn't an accurate statement. It won the Guitar Player Magazine Editors Pick award, and it's Pigtronix best selling pedal.
I'm not saying that it's not favored by some, but look around on TGP and you'll see that it's one of the less picked up compressors, next to the Keeley C2 and C4, the Analog Man comps and the vintage Dyna Comp Scripts. I see these compressors on boards around the world a WHOLE lot more than the PT. It's not like I've not tried it myself .. There are just issues with the nature of the design of this compressor - it's not just me who thinks so.
Ok taking a second listen... I want one so bad. The next purchase after my Kay was going to be a good boost pedal to drive it with a nice vintage sort of boost... I was already leaning toward a Philosopher's Tone, but this thing is super sweet. This will make a beautiful addition to my arsenal, especially for a guitar line I need to record in June. It's the exact pedal I need to achieve the sound I want... ::drool:: and anything Andy plays Radiohead on I automatically like 10x more...
i think its the first compressor/sustainer that doesnt kill all the twangie sounds from a strat. or at least thats what i can heear from youtube. nice review as always !
Sick I already wanted a Philosopher's Tone... Now I have all the more reason to get one. Once I get this vintage Kay amp from e-bay, this will be my next purchase... This has got such a sick tone... Weird Fishes!?!?!?!?!?! YES! Andy knows what I like!
