  • This is so excellent! I love her dark voice tone and force, and her technique is perfect. It also seems hers is one of the few voices which can hardly be fully captured even by the best modern technique ... so it is even better to hear her live.

  • Sorry to hear you have taken down your private recordings - do wish these opera people would wise up and see that people like you do a fantastic and free job of promoting their work. But then, sadly, the opera world is hardly full of super-smart marketing people. Till then - ah well, thanks for all you did and thanks for continuing to post less 'problematic' material. Perhaps one day they will have the good manners and sense to thank you also...

  • Very, very promising !!! Beautiful tone, lovely masculine hues and amazing coloratura indeed. Delphine Galou's voice makes me think of a blend of Mijanovic and Genaux's voices.

  • The costumes appear to be the most accurate replicas I have ever seen, and to couple that with such performance practice, wow, it must have been quite a time travel experience. :) As for Coote's Zenobia, I'm sorry but at the moment I can only offer you the English version. It is from a 2001 recording with David Walker in the title role. He's good, but I do still prefer you-know-who as Radamisto. ;)

  • Tx a lot llggg for Coote's version, love her voice. She was one of the best Sestos and Ruggieros ever heard and seen. However here, after Gondek and Galou, I need that kind of ornamentation, 3:46 / 4:06, mmmmmh. My other problem, I cannot listen to an English translation, no way. Couple of yrs ago, I wouldn't have minded. Now I do :-(

  • Well, then just use a tiny little trick a resort to - think of it as an oratorio, like English was simply built in with no options to choose from. :)

  • But I prefer an opera 10'000'000x over an oratorio (except "Il Trionfo ...", which counts for me as kind of opera). Any of Handel's operas is better than The Messiah imo.

  • Hmmm, and what about Semele? I just got Bartoli's DVD and I can't stop watching it. :)

  • Semele and Hercules are a compromise, somewhere in between -> I prefer any Italian GFH opera 5000000x over them. That became obvious to me with JDD's Furore CD.

  • Interesting. The only language I myself have an aversion for in baroque music is French. Don't know why, but it just doesn't work for this style. Makes the singers sound like donkeys hee-hawing. :-/ No offence to French people and their language which can, of course, do wonders in some other styles of music (like medieval songs or late 19th.c. opera). P.S. Gudrun, do you realise that we cram each and every one of your videos with our little discussions? :)

  • Pfff! The air de cour, Lully, Charpentier, Marais, Campra, Jacquet de la Guerre, Destouches, Clérambault, Rebel and Francoeur, Rameau, etc. Donkeys hee-hawing? You're really missing something, there.

  • Well, I can take Lully and Campra, maybe even Mondonville, but for some reason cannot stand Rameau. :)

  • Yess D. Galou is definitely a singer to monitor. She was new to me, now I'm at each listening more and more captivated. Before, my fav version had been by J. Gondek. D. Galou's da capo is obviously inspired by that one.

    I read she sang Cesare in Caen last year, Id die to hear her Quel torrente. Apropos Cesare: her elasticity end of part B is amazing and even reminds me of La Mijanovic.

  • I was there, as you may remember from my video about it. Great actress, more manly than most countertenors in Caesar's role, and she was impressive in every aria, except for the last one, where she was out of breath (I felt sorry for her, but it still didn't remove anything from her awesome performance). Either Händel wrote one too many arias for this role, or (more probably) Senesino was a real monster.

  • Huh, yeah, such stagings are probably very cheap, right? :-/ Anyhow, great post, as always. :) Have you ever heard Alice Coote's version in English? I would face my own destruction... or something like that. :)
