In Greec or in albania it doesent matter he is a real champion
the very good new now is that he is helping an old friend also an weightlifter
Ilir Suli that retired 6 years ago.he is back and Luan shabani or (Leonidas Sabanis) End Pyrros Dimas (piro dhima) are helping Him to be champion again in albania
@Aeternummm yeah sure you are his cousin...we do believe that...Greeks in Albania are present since many years ago and they were not allowed to have the s in their names. So Pyrros Dimas was written in his papers Phyro Dima because Albanians do translate the names in the albanian language. So he didn't change his name he just corrected it.He did take part under the flag of albania because in sports citizenship matters and not ethnicity...And also don't tell us you are his cousin
Dimas emigrated to Greece in 1991, at age 20. He acquired Greek citizenship in 1992,[4] and first competed under the Greek flag in the 1992 Summer Olympics, winning the gold medal in the 82.5 kg class.
So Dear friends he is Albanian and he change his name wen hi moved to greece .Hi real Name is Piro Dhima .But in greec is a practice to change names into greec names and surnames..if you want to know more you can just google a little .
He was part of the Albanian weightlifting team to which he made important contributions: In 1989 in the 62nd World Championship of Weightlifting Dimas ranked 12th in the World and helped Albania rank 13th in the world.).[4]
In the 69th European Weightlifting Championship (held in Aalborg, Denmark May 1990), Dimas ranked 4th in Europe and Albania ranked 3rd (after 1st placed USSR and 2nd placed Bulgaria), and in the European Cup for nations (in Antalya, Turkey, December 1990)
Dimas started the sport at 11 and competed at a junior's level at 14. At 18, in 1989, he became triple Champion of Albania for the 82.5 kg category and in 1990 he repeated himself.[4] While in Albania, he was coached by Ferid Berberi.
In 1990 he was also accorded the title "Master of Sports" by the Albanian government and the title "European Master" by the European Weightlifting Federation.[4]
@svr2009iscool He was born in Albania, which would suggest that even if he is ethnically Greek, he is form Albania. Did you even know he had to acquire Greek citizenship? Why would someone "from" Greece not be a citizen.
But seriously, who cares where's he from--the Olympics, displayed here, were originally made to be free of politics. So admire Dimas for the achievements he has, not for the nationality you think he's from.
I love the way he just stands up with the snatch grip 175k after the buzzer........what an epic lifter. Inspired me to go power clean something now!!!
Dimas was born to ethnic Greek parents in Himara, Northern Epirus(Albania).
He became triple Champion of Albania for the 82.5 kg category.
Dimas emigrated to Greece in 1991, at age 20. He acquired Greek citizenship in 1992, and first competed under the Greek flag in the 1992 Olympics.
So for all the people that think it matters so much, your both right. Stop being inverted about political boundaries and respect the man for his achievements as an athlete.
One of the greatest Greek athlets. He said that he is proud for Greece but he don't know how much proud is Greece for him! A great thanks to this modern Hercules! Pyrros remember: All of your Greek brothers love you and support you for ever!
the funniest thing about this is how he can deadlift 385lbs snatch grip and look around so nonchalantly like its nothing and do the same thing when its over his head.
@TheVictorybringer olympic weightlifting consists of two events - 1) Snatch 2) Clean and Jerk. The final results are the SUM of maximum weight lifted in each event. Dimas managed to outtake everyone else on the sum, by scoring INSANE numbers on clean and jerk (which was always his speciality)
@zkyggen No he is not! In all of his interviews about his story, he said that he is from a Greek family on Himara and that when he was child in Albania the albanian children called him "Greco maskara". Also they made him to hate Greece because of this, but as he said his father told him that one day he would be proud for his Greek origin! These are his words and i can prove it to you by his interview!
@ketoras i dont know man the guys says he is albanian in the vid, but im guessing he doesnt lift for albania cuz we dont have enough money to keep him
Pyrros the hero! I remember the moment later in Athens 2004 when he got the bronze and received a 15 minutes standing ovation ( or at least I heard it that way). Magnificent personality!
I can see his abs through his shirt...
