You need to hear the Wild Tchoupitoulas do this. Bear in mind that the Neville Bros (as in "The Meters") lived on Tchoupitoulas Street... and got their start with Big Chief Jolly and his gang...
Yes, Mardi Gras down in New Orleans and Mobile, AL. Have a safe one everybody and for those who have not come to the South, make your plans. You will NOT be disappointed. Hurricane Katrina did not break our spirit =) Only brought us closer together, OH YEAH! Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez (Let the good times roll!)
Greetings from 9th (dats me) alive and well coming to you from the Who dat Nation! If you ain't likin' this, call dat undertaker baby 'cause you ain't alive no more. This is why I choose to live 3 feet below sea level. Who Dat!!!!!
I'm proud to say that on a wonderful Monday nite I saw these folks play in person. Dr. John on one side of the stage and Fess on the other. Nevilles and Meters. It don't get no better and I ain't ever come close since.
I will never forget the first time a total stranger said he loved me, It was a big black man playing a guitar outside a bar in NOLA . I was admiring his music and he pulled me onto his lap and whispered in my ear "I love you." Drunk as I was at the time, it warmed my heart forever ..... Bless all the arts and performers!!
Lord , have mercy ! The man who wrote it , the man who made it famous , and those other guys , Art Neville and Dr. John have recorded pretty fair versions of it themselves. Legends all. And the song itself is a legend. That's why it's sometimes called the National Anthem of New Orleans.
As soon as Longhair starts tinkling that distinctive, unmistakable rumba roll on the ebonies and ivories you can't help but smile. It's quite possibly the happiest piano melody ever played.
Truely some of the great's. There's about what, 3 pianos and 10-11 people on stage, and I swear they sound like one. Great union. That's what I call 100% QUALITY!
Nothin like New Orleans...St. Bernard and Miro....St. Peter Claver...Circle Foods...the sights and sounds you can't see of hear nowhere else...N.O. !!

It's interesting how different people , from Professor Longhair to Dr. John, perform this tune a little differently. Some go to the 5 chord in the middle of the 1 phrase, others don't. It's also notated wrong a alot of different ways in various sheet music publications.
I get off da streetcar an' walk t'roo da Quarters an' come ta Jackson Square an' dat's where Longhair's playin' dat day...right 'cross from da Jax Brewery an' da smell of hops is thick in da air...
