  • real music............

  • This is the most awesomest video ever made....

  • Thanks for this post. This is wonderful music.

  • The good Dr. looks like the orphaned lovechild of Cher and Sergeant Pepper. But he play like a champion !

  • wow, Earl King, the Professor, and Dr. John!!

  • You need to hear the Wild Tchoupitoulas do this. Bear in mind that the Neville Bros (as in "The Meters") lived on Tchoupitoulas Street... and got their start with Big Chief Jolly and his gang...

  • Outstanding the best of entertainment...a stage of legends.

  • Who is the tailor of Dr. John... he deserves an Oscar!!

  • @DaremoS dr. teeth from the muppets

  • Thick....and superfly

  • Only three keyboards... why the restraint?

  • Yes, Mardi Gras down in New Orleans and Mobile, AL. Have a safe one everybody and for those who have not come to the South, make your plans. You will NOT be disappointed. Hurricane Katrina did not break our spirit =) Only brought us closer together, OH YEAH! Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez (Let the good times roll!)

  • ITS CARNIVAL TIME DOWN HERE IN NEW ORLEANS!! time to catch some beads and coconuts!! YES!

  • NEW ORLEANS HAS THE BEST MUSIC, FOOD AND PEOPLE!!!!! HAPPY MARDI GRAS!

  • Greetings from 9th (dats me) alive and well coming to you from the Who dat Nation! If you ain't likin' this, call dat undertaker baby 'cause you ain't alive no more. This is why I choose to live 3 feet below sea level. Who Dat!!!!!

  • Amazing vid... wow!

  • 10 people are going to hell

  • Superb! amazing music, and musicians! thanks for posting.

  • I'm proud to say that on a wonderful Monday nite I saw these folks play in person. Dr. John on one side of the stage and Fess on the other. Nevilles and Meters. It don't get no better and I ain't ever come close since.

  • Knock em out- Lilly Allen

  • Ab Freakin' Fab Piano!!! Groovy!

  • Bloody Brilliant!!!!!!!

  • 10 people have no souls

  • Make that 12.

  • a stage full of legends as well as an excellent song, I wish I could've been there to see this- would have looked even greater in real life

  • I will never forget the first time a total stranger said he loved me, It was a big black man playing a guitar outside a bar in NOLA . I was admiring his music and he pulled me onto his lap and whispered in my ear "I love you." Drunk as I was at the time, it warmed my heart forever ..... Bless all the arts and performers!!

  • Damn....lookit all them white kids just sittin' there!

  • Dr. John seems like just a cool ass dude.........

  • superb

  • Wow.

  • One of my (newest) favourite songs of all time. And performed by a supergroup of New Orleans legends... sweet

  • They call him "Doctor John", the "Night Tripper"...

  • Lord , have mercy ! The man who wrote it , the man who made it famous , and those other guys , Art Neville and Dr. John have recorded pretty fair versions of it themselves. Legends all. And the song itself is a legend. That's why it's sometimes called the National Anthem of New Orleans.

  • Hang on, looks like I just found out...this performance is from a 1974 PBS Soundstage special in Chicago.

  • As soon as Longhair starts tinkling that distinctive, unmistakable rumba roll on the ebonies and ivories you can't help but smile. It's quite possibly the happiest piano melody ever played.

  • Anyone know the time, place and occasion for this performance? Is it part of a full show and is it available on DVD?

  • The Subdudes did a nice cover of this – with kazoo chorus!

  • what a wonderful tunes, it won't get out of my head

  • Hell yes

  • This one's my favorite-- so much incredible talent up there.

  • Truely some of the great's. There's about what, 3 pianos and 10-11 people on stage, and I swear they sound like one. Great union. That's what I call 100% QUALITY!

  • WHO DAT!!!???

  • GREAT SHIZNIT

  • soooo cool! almost cried. miss earl big time

  • Wow. All star line up. These guys rule.

  • what a line up!

  • dr teeth is dr John

  • Sit still. I dare you.

  • What's the specific name of that piano style?

  • @3shiftgtr Which one. There are three keyboards working here :)

Hope expert weighs in. I'm curios to now :?

  • There's a piano, an organ, and Mac on Rhodes.

The piano is what I'm curious about...is that the "butterfly" style....

Help me, I'm just a guitar player from up nawth...

  • This was not recorded in New Orleans! Yes it's Staehle on drums: TV Show: WTTW, Chicago Ill., 30 October 1974.

    (Information from my Fess discography)

  • it looks pretty much with Lily Allen-Knock 'Em Out (just the melody, the lyrics are differents!)

  • Some of the greats in new orleans soul music.

  • who dat

  • Quite a line-up!

  • from Soundstage on PBS

  • Comment removed

  • ooo so fast

  • ...'zat Shine on guitar???...Art's there...is zat Freddie Stahle on drums???...

  • Makin' me homesick..I miss N'awlins,Mardi Gras,K &B, Ponchatrain beach...

  • I am about to cry - 9th ward Baby!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dr. John sounds like he's talking in another language! Love it!

  • Dr. John looks so YOUNG!!

  • freddie wasn't a leftie - but that's not freddie

  • I dont think thats Leo, but I might be wrong. Wow! How did they get that many Ledgends on the same stage at one time?

  • thats Leo Nocettli isnt it?

  • LOL....Freddie King? Not only does that guitarist look nothing like him, Freddie plays lefty bro

  • is that freddie king playing guitar?

  • excellent

  • right music, right threads, right on

  • I think I'd give a limb to go back in time and see this performance. :D

  • nola legends, what a great place to call home.

  • Love it.... a stage full of legends.

Just went to my first Jazz Fest...

AMAZING. I wish I was from New Orleans. I am definitely moving there.

NOLA is a national treasure and should be visited by all people who love American music. If you can't have a goodtime in NOLA...check your pulse.

  • can't agree more with your 1st line!

  • @pmorgan317 Right on, when you're tired of New Orleans, you're tired of Life.

  • @pmorgan317 Well, I'd get tired of this... I mean, it isn't bad at all, but I'd love some funky Tower of Power or something after a while...

  • Words can't describe how awesome and funky this is. New Orleans music royalty all playing together...love it love it love it.

  • the greatest thing on the tube

  • Anytime I think of leaving this shithole, its stuff like this that keeps me home. ;)

  • Thats classic man!

  • R.I.P. Professor Longhair Thanks for your gift to the world..

  • Wow! What an incredible piece of musical history! Not sure if Leo and Zig are onstage, but damned if that's not George Porter playing tambourine and wearing the silly ass white pantsuit with the "man bag"! LMAO!!!! Can't wait to see Junior and give him hell about that fashion faux pas!

  • this is pretty much the coolest vid on youtube

  • @Boggles577 I'm with you--this could be the best ever!

  • It's interesting how different people , from Professor Longhair to Dr. John, perform this tune a little differently. Some go to the 5 chord in the middle of the 1 phrase, others don't. It's also notated wrong a alot of different ways in various sheet music publications.

  • Thank goodness I grew up in Louisiana instead of say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Iowa. GOD BLESS PROFESSOR LONG HAIR and Dr John !!!!!

  • you fuckin (sorry) lucky one!!! I'm french of creole ancestry but i live in a beautiful but particularly unfunky place called Paris...

  • AMEN! I am a proud New Orleanian but had to spend half my time being raised in Minn, PA, TX, and CA and no place is anywhere as special.

  • this is AWSOME I'M CREOLE

  • great song

  • Wow, what a meeting! That's some good raw music, new orleans style! Thank you for sharing this

  • why are all the white people sitting down??? souless i tell you, souless!! they should be dancing!!! dancing!!!!

  • a combination of them being lame and the fact that a lot of places back in the day needed dancing permits.

  • makes sense, i had no idea, thx man

  • This is a performance that was recorded for public television. It's a live tv audience. I guess they probably are expected to stay seated.

  • i love doctor john's muppet style!!!

  • That's who they created the muppet character after :)

    Dr. Teeth=Dr John

  • hummm doctor teeth... i don't remember him, is he in the electric mayhem band? anyway i will google this.

thanks! if you're into 70's you shall try my videos, lots of funk and oddities.

  • That's some heavy jam mate.

  • What an Incredible Video! I've seen so many of these people perform in the 70's around the time this was filmed.

  • Why did they put a mic on the dummy piano? I can hear it thumping!

  • Ain't no "dummy pianos" up on that stage, pal.

You're looking at three of the most talented men to ever grace the 88 keys- Professor Longhair, Dr. John, and Art Neville.

  • wanting new friends

    wanting new friends wq

  • Totally cool. Thanks BloodNGutts for sharing this gem.

  • yeah you right!!!!!!!!!!!

  • god bless em all

  • wow! I've got a 78 of this one too, but I must admit this is the first time I've ever seen video of earl king

  • ya ya proffesor!

  • Pure Gold. Thanks a lot for uploading this

  • good style!

  • I get off da streetcar an' walk t'roo da Quarters an' come ta Jackson Square an' dat's where Longhair's playin' dat day...right 'cross from da Jax Brewery an' da smell of hops is thick in da air...

  • Thank God Longhair recorded Earl King's tune !

  • isn't that ron jeremy on the pee-ano tickling those ivories again

  • this is a hell of an old school find - THANK YOU for posting!!

  • Everbody got their own style on the stage. just like new orleans, everyone brings what they got to throw in the gumbo. In New Orleans, you can just be yourself because no one care who you are. The professor is rockin those gold front way before southern rap artists made gold front popular.

  • hey localcd---------a Southern tradition..They been doing the gold teeth for over 60+ years..real strong in New Orleans and the rest of La....Remember Johnny Guitar Watson from Houston had a gold 35 years ago...And that WERE NOT REMOVABLE UNLESS U REPLACED THE TOOTH...it wasnt for a "STYLE" LOL or something that was a "FAD" Lol

  • My Spy Boy says "Oona Mahla Walla Dolla"

  • Man, this makes me miss Gary Burbank's show

  • if you've got to go on stage keep out of your mother's closset

  • Finally, DJ's voice is explained. He never speaks, all vocals are performrd by the undead muppet he is host to.

  • oh i thought it wae the "real"prof longhair"

but nevermind dr john is goooood

    great tune

  • It is the "real" professor Longhair aka "fess" aka real name Robert Byrd. Fess is wearing the black hat and the jean jacket with the packets, playing the baldwin piano. He wrote this song.

  • Dr. John is DA MAN no doubt! But there has to be a pharmaceutical explanation for some of his outfits.

  • Thanks for the video. It's awesome 'Fess is Fantastic! I simply can't get enough...moves me.

  • What part of New Orleans is the Professor from? I heard this song over a hundred time ,but song still sound fresh .

  • This is a big part of New Orleans music DNA .

  • knock em out's better.. . .

  • no you're wrong. original is best

  • no youre wrong. freedom of opinion is better:)

  • Absolutely amazing. Dr John, Art Neville, Earl King, and Professor Longhair on the same stage...Is that Alvin "Shine" Robinson on Guitar?

  • "THROW ME SUMPIN'MISTER!!!"

  • ya can't go wrong wit' a band like dis'....fo sho!

  • when/where was this filmed?

  • My dad know I love this song soo much... He calls me at least once a month to sing something from My home town and Prof. Longhair is my artist of choice. Thanks to him and my dad who whistles these songs on my voicemail monthly!

  • I'm crying...

  • Great stuff. Thanks so much!

  • somthing cool for all you 12th nighters, go daddy,go...

  • total surprise finale mack

  • MAGICAL!

  • people who are critical of new orleans artist i believe are ignorant and jealous of a unique culture.

  • Fess playing the way only he can. Great to see. I love Dr. John too, I say him a while ago in the UK. His New Orleans accent is just too cool.

  • got lilly allen?

  • Is that a joke?

  • Dr. John you silly ass!

  • Hold up man don't be disrespecting one of New Orleans greats FOOL!!!

  • louisiana people are great people, god bless...

  • to all of you who bitched about the production values here, you're looking at it with extremely bad vision....it ain't about the camerawork, which by the way, was the show i produced and directed called SOUNDSTAGE in the 70's, it's about the fact that Professor Longhair was on national television along with these incredible New Orleans musicians....it introduced the culture to an untold number of people...forget the camerawork folks...focus on the music!

  • huh bra, amen, you looking at a shit load of musical talent and creativity on this stage...

  • I want to thank you for this post Earl was my uncle we (including his son)never seen this before. I called him 1:00 a.m. when I first saw it Thanks again!!!! TROB70072

  • Can't beat the stamina of Professor Longhair's right hand. Jesus. Just try it at home if you think it's simple.

  • The drummer on this performance is my ex boyfriend, Freddy Staehle. He was on several of Dr. Johns albums including the seminal "Gumbo" and the Grammy Award winning "Going Back to New Orleans".

Sadly the production on this video is absolutely horrible and the mix of the instruments is completely screwed up. What a shame!

Wow this was such a crap production.

    All these musicians are amazing..

    Peace,

    Debstar

  • Yes, Debstar, these are all incredible musicians and the production totally sux..One thing stands out though. And that's that Everyone was giving a tribute to the Professor...They did the best and it's only the recording that makes this celebration a sad thing.

  • You never get a really good view of the bass player, but I'm almost certain that's not George Porter of The Meters. George is much lighter skinned than that and almost never played a Jazz Bass (preferred a P-Bass). I'm also not sure that's Leo Nocentelli on guitar. Looks far too heavy to be him.

  • I Think it also not zig modeliste playing drums, if you search for the meters you will find two song recorded on the same evening...

  • dont lily allen have a beat like that?

  • longhair rocks

  • you are a douchbag....do you go to every page and put this stupid girl shit.....GET A LIFE AND A REAL JOB....music soothes porn just excites get rid of this loser

  • Where has this music been used recently? its buggin me? xx

  • Lilly Allen

  • meet the parents
