damnnnnn this that 6th grade music class tip.... used to sing this all time everyone told me to shut up... didn't give one fuck and belted the notes like a bawse shit this is bringing me back.....
All the way up to the 50's and 60's, downtown Gary was the place to go in northwest Indiana. Then it just got really bad with murder, robbery and violence. People moved away further south. When the music man knew it, the only place more hopping than Gary was Chicago about an hour away. Today as you go through downtown Gary it's run down, boarded up buildings that are decaying. Scary looking guys standing on street corners that glare at you as you drive by. Stay away
Yeah, let him walk down a street in Gary, Indiana today, he'd be shot, then robbed. That's a place you don't even want to drive through, let alone stop!!!
THANKS for posting this! Mama Paroo is played by Pert Kelton, who was the first "Alice" in the Jackie Gleason "Honeymooner" TV skits. Audrey Meadows may have been cuter, but Pert had more "oomph" as Alice...and was more believable...Audrey was very good, but a knockout babe like her would not have married an arrogant schmo like Ralph Kramden.
if you're not from Gary then ya'll shouldn't be talking.im from Gary im in college and im making something of myself.so shut ur mouth u ignorant fools.
@sgedlund this was back in the day when gary was a working-class steel city. now it's overrun by niggers because the demand for steel went down so the working people, blacks and whites, moved out.
Just read the story in the news today about a photographer who photographs sights of urban decay. Gary, IN was a featured city in the story. This song immediately popped into my head, so I had to hear it. What a great movie this was. Brings back memories.
@missawesomex10 U NEED 2 SHUT UP IF U HATE GARY THAT MUCH DEN DON'T TALK ABOUT STUPID GET A LYFE RATHER THAN TALKIN ABOUT A CITY WOW U DONT LIVE HERE SO DONT WORRY BOUT IT OR THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE HERE
@MsMcthomas you are ignorant as hell all theyre saying is that gary is alot different today than from 1962 which is true you idiot. people like you are the reason people think everybody from gary is stupid
@missawesomex10 Harold Hill (Robert Preston) was singing about the Gary Indiana of 1912. Back then Gary was probably quite a town to sing about. You are right that he wouldn't be singing about Gary Indiana today if he could see it now. It is such a shame how some towns become so run down : (
@ImpatientGriselda I'm very familiar with this film. As others commented here, Harold Hill is singing about the Gary of the early 1900's. Gary Indiana was once a nice town but that was a very long, long time ago.
@missawesomex10 No, he'd be busting heads, which is what America needs, right now; a few ballsy old timers to gobsmack us back onto the path. Remember, friends, we're the same people we always were. Somehow, though, we've been shmoozed out of acknowledging how special that we and our nation really are. Once we get over this, as we're beginning to do, it's gonna be Katie, bar the frikkin' DOOR! Prestons' idealized 1905 Gary is gonna look like 2011 COMPTON, by comparison! Better days ahead!
@demi...I agree. I saw Broderick's version, and I thought it stunk something awful. Seriously, I can't imagine anyone else but Preston playing Prof. Hill.
I love how the only place that can apparently light his face is infested with crime, violence, stealing and rape :) Lol just kidding, but I love this song so much! Our present day piece of crap gives it a bad name :/
The 1962 film was better than the new one in my opinion. It had more of a convincing landscape that made you think "Oh yes, the town is quite old fashioned, the ladies skirts are quite different and the men have checkered suits. Of course this is 1962. What other century could this be?". But for the other one...no. The quality of the video was better, but for me in a not-so-good way.
@aedododingdona clearly you hae no taste-- broderick is wooden in his performance and has no facial expression in 76 trombones--dont beleive for a second that broderick is a salesman at all. preston created the character and plays him perfectly--as he did on broadway--for which he won a Tony Award and he also won a Golden Laurel Award for the film version of The Music Man and received the Career Achievement Award in 1982. The Preston film has the original choreography from the stage show
@Demithegoddess how true==looked at some of music man clips from broderick's performanxe and made the comment that he was dull and some young teeny bopper got in this debate that broderick's version was clsoer to the stage show--not a clue. i just stopped arguing--i hate to go into a battle of wits with some one who is not prepared
Well said & well put! Matthew Broderick is a gifted actor...but he was too young & not forceful enough when he made that made for TV version years ago. I too miss Robert Preston. Truly one of the greats. He was BORN to play Prof Harold Hill...just as Ethel Merman was BORN to play Mama Rose in Gypsy. THANKS for your thoughtful & insightful comment! :)
Shirley Jones was pregnant all through this movie. You can't even tell!!! Wonderful costuming!
