John's work is woefully under played but his music stands the test of time. And with sampling the music can be brought to the next generation and kept alive. My appreciation of the quality of Mr Barry's talent comes not from the bond movies but from the powerful samples used in Acen's trip to the moon series of 1992.you only live twice samples also used by Robbie Williams in millenium.
Probably the best song i've ever heard in a Bond movie. The part from 5:29 to 5:59 is absolutely amazing. I get an unexplainable feeling when i hear it. "Bond Lured Into Pyramids " is another beautiful song from Moonraker.
Probably this is the best music creation of John Barry. In the movie Moonraker, when that music was played in the space seen, there was almost no dialogue for over 5 minutes...there was no need actually, John Barry music was enough to just relax and amaze us of something which i can't still find a word to describe it.
Thank you so much for uploading this piece and the stills. Terrific stuff. Reminds me what a good movie this actually is - despite being just about the cheesiest Bond there is - and oh my god but Lois Chiles is BEAUTIFUL.
I remember as a 3 year old getting a pack of Moonraker 'candy' cigarettes during the summer of 1979, there were free cards as well, one of Jaws and a still of Hugo Drax plus one of Moore soaked to the skin in the meeting room chamber beneath the shuttle engines.....wish i still had them lol
@tomtcf76 I still have a sticker of Jaws from "Moonraker" tucked in my wallet...and I can't remember how the hell I got it or why I keep it there, but I see no reason to get rid of it.
The music is amazing. The film is one of the "less good ones" as I like to call them. No such thing as a bad Bond movie. But the first half is pretty good...and the freefall opening is spectacular...so don't trash this completely!
The film in my opinion was one of the fluffiest, goofiest Bond escapades ever. The attentive set work and the beautiful soundtrack, however, were redeeming qualities that made the film that much more worthy. Here's to you, John.
Those first 16 seconds will stay with me for the rest of my life, as will the whole soundtrack. This amazing music completeley makes up for the shit-fest of a film that it's featured in.
This is one of John Barry's most memorable scores. I remember going to see Moonraker when it was first released in theaters, and to be honest, to this day, I still love this movie. Maybe it's not the best Bond film, but, for me there's a nostalgia factor involved. As a kid I loved Bond and I loved Star Wars, and I saw this as a combination of both. And then there was the soundtrack. John Barry was an absolute genius. May he RIP.
Dispite Moonraker being a rediculous film in my eye, this piece is always my light at the end of the tunnel. If you turned on the television and saw the scene where this music is played, you would think you were watching the lost third Space Odyssey movie... and then Roger reappears and you're like, "Ha!"
You know i think John Barry could have done an Amazing score for Star Wars- not to take anything away from John William's timeless classics, but I'd have loved to hear this music in Star Wars. It is Awesome stuff, so Grand and deliberate.
I feel so Sorry for those who cannot appreciate Fantastic movie scores. So Sorry.
Beautiful, like Holst. It has a romantic 70's vibe as well, I always hear that in the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack (cloud city) and in Nadia's theme.
Also, have you noticed the chords of the opening "riff" can be found in the Disco version of the theme at the end of the film?
Every single song of the James Bond movies is unique. Moonraker - at least for me - was one of the best Bond stories. Late 70s was an excellent period for James Bond Mythos after all. Thank you for uploading this rare piece of acoustical diamond...
You might wanna check out the Black Hole soundtrack - also composed by John Barry, that film came out the same year Moonraker did. There's definitely some similarities!
the music from Moonraker and especially this epic piece is just unreal. John Barry was just at the very top of his game for this film. The entire soundtrack is just an master at work.
I have to agree. When I was a kid I thought this one sucked, partially because Jaws turned out all nice and the starwars-style laser-battle, but watching it recently, I was surprised how good a movie it really is, and how good the effects with the final gaspods are. There's something more thrilling about a production that uses a big budget for locations and model-based effects instead of cost-cutting CGI.
John Barry at his very best. And such an underated Bond movie, just because it was cheesy at the time. Watch it now, it stands head and shoulders above Daniel Craig's far too serious interpretation of Bond, it's a fun ride from start to finish and one of my personal faves. (And the soundtrack gives me chills listening to it..brilliant).
@GazzTheFunkadelic Even though Bond was thrown in outer space, I think Moonraker is considerably less cheesy than Die Another Day. I'm glad they stopped the CGI mess right after that, the reboot with Craig gave the series a breath of fresh air, it's not that bad.
At first I hated the far-fetched nature of the plot, like the whole space thing. But now I think it all adds to the entertainment, and Moonraker has become one of my favorite Bond movies. It's like 2001: A Space Odyssey. Perfect space shots combined with perfect soundtracks.
@KaitainCPS I prefer that flick than any post-Goldfinger Connery movie (especially that laughable DAF) or than any earlier Moore movie. It's a matter of taste, I always prefered Moore's coolness over that unrefined Connery.
