Speaking of being wired, I believe that I have a short circuit that prevents me from doing fast triplets.. Seriously, I can play drums relatively fast, I have good coordination and I can keep good pace playing slow to moderate speed triplets. But once I start to quicken the pace I lose my control and it all goes to hell. Have you ever met someone that had this disease?
@rsalg1203 I think there are definitely certain physical actions that for certain people trigger some sort of a short-circuit type of thing. I would recommend using a metronome to try and find the BPM (the actual velocity threshold) that it starts to fall apart, and then practicing to the metronome up to that threshold and see if you can slowly move that threshold higher (play it faster)...
@mcblane15 I don't think there is a right way or wrong way to do them. Like Terry said, Bonham led with his left on the triplets. I learned by copying as Bonham as well. When I was learning I also assumed the I the triplet was a descending fill from high to low, so rack tom (high), floor tom (middle), and then kick (low). Dong them in different orders in not wrong, just adds to your drumming vocabulary I think. Peace!
@bonzoleum I enjoy your videos, but this one really just made me realize how weird my hand tendencies are. I'm right handed in almost everything, except the drums. But, I lead with my left. So naturally, when I do my triplets, I start on the floor tom (which is on the left on my set). I think you're saying this is what Bonham did (but reversed because he's righty). Is that right?
@Foppa921 Yes, but Bonham-being righty-led triplets with his opposite (weaker) hand. Most folks will lead triplets with their strong hand. (By triplets here of course I mean the hand-hand-foot combo).
wait i didn't get it, i don't understand english that well P: i'm left handed it's easier for me to do a triplet? or should i lead with the right hand?
I was actually thinking about the same issue with the leading with Left of Right. I am right handed so my teacher has me doing my exercises leading with the Right first, but I always felt naturally to lead with my Left. I'm only a beginner so I thought I'm suppose to lead with the Right if I'm right handed.....Now I learned this is actually common haha! Thanks for this video... I'm currently learning playing triplet related material! :D
@xACIDxHEADx het terry, hello from vancouver, good luck to your blackcocks this year!!! have you seen brian tichy's "the groov remains the same"? it think its amazing. blows me away how some brilliant drummers like carey and mayer dont really pull it off, then a guy like jimmy d'anda just wails! anyway, wondering what you think of it and if you had any favorites?
@sparkles67 I have to see more of "The Groove" footage to see who is my fav. Tichy does Immigrant nicely!
To me Bonham playing is a distinct style & feel-it's separate from strict technique.. I've seen many folks who are great solid drummers with busloads of chops, and they can't cop the feel of Bonham to save their life!
It is really helpful how you show the difference between leading with the left and right hand. I actually am ambidextrous, but have always been inclined to lead with my right hand. I've been changing to leading with the left though, and I do like the sound and fell much better. I'm gonna add a couple things you go over here to my practice sessions.
You are a great teacher, but please, less time talking. You can make a point in one sentence....you don't have to go on and on, e.g., leading with right hand instead of left, etc.
thanks so much for your great videos you have helped me along so much. I can pull off a good triplet but struggle to fit them into a fill. some help with getting into and out of a triplet fill would be handy. would it be possible to take use through some of the fills Bonham played in "Nobody's Fault But Mine" Knebworth 1979 It's a great live version that just flows along with some great little fills
I put "Rhythmic Patterns" on my Christmas list. I've been struggling with my left hand for years. Are you familiar with "The Ultimate Realistic Rock Drum Method" by Carmine Appice? I have that book in mind as well.
Hey Terry! Awesome video, if you've got some free time you should check out some of the Zep drum covers I've posted. I've learned a lot from your videos!
I love you humor and your videos.

@juandrader Sorry about the delay. If you're a lefty I would say: Yes reverse the hands. Use your LEFT instead of RIGHT.

The roots of bonham triplets belongs to the genius of Max Roach. (from a talk between John Riley & Steve Smith).
Great video!!

hey Terry! I have a 1968 Ludwig floor tom. Do you know how much is it worth?
uri172 4 months ago
@uri172 It depends on the finish and condition. Folks can always use one! Of course you can look for the other drums to build a full kit.
bonzoleum 4 months ago
@bonzoleum the finish is Blue Sparkle and the condition is good!
I love your videos by the way!
