Stories are still stories, no matter what fool spews them. We are born, we die and nothing comes of us. What use is there in life? Helping others is a waste of time, and yet so is self-satisfaction. In the end, there is nothing. Pitiful creatures we. We eat the fruit of the dirt until, at our last breath, we slump into it again.

How silly to say that because someone has misused the Biblical story of creation, its values are not good...

Did the nazis misuse Darwin´s story of survival of the fittest and that it is normal for the weak to die?

@Bobathefish dawins story? evolution is fact. it is not a story. it has no value's to moral behaviour. while i agree that misusing of the biblocal stories is not a argument against the stories but then again the stories truely are afwull stories. in what way is the story of noah's ark or the genoicides good?

I'm not sure if they misused Darwin's "story" of survival of the fittest or if they misused the Bible and that it's normal for the Jews to be considered as traitors, after all they did betray Jesus... however, one thing is for sure: million's of people died and Hitler did it with the Pope's blessing, not with Darwin's blessing. As a matter of fact, Hitler had banned atheism and any Darwinian writings. BTW, how does a scientific observation prompt you to go genocidal?

Interesting that the story is more about 'the creation of love'. This is not something the bible actually talks about (as far as I remember, it's been a while for me :) ).

Het zijn beide "scheppingsverhalen", zegt u, terwijl ze beide in een totaal andere traditie staan, en bovendien de tekstimmanente intentie radicaal verschilt: Genesis beschrijft autoriaal hoe een god de aarde en de mens schept, Aristofanes verhaalt dronken over menselijk liefdesverlangen; de mens en zijn driegeslachtelijke natuur bestaat bij A. al.

En literatuur geen "wetenschap"? Geen natuurwetenschap, wel geesteswetenschap. Literatuur en fantasie zijn zo "echt" als uw hand.

@leidenaar123 Ik stel dat ook het verhaal uit Genesis fantasie is. Wie weet hoe dat verhaal ooit verzonnen is. Misschien ook wel tijdens een diner tussen vrienden, die een metafoorrijk verhaal ging vertellen. Overigens is het Bijbelse scheppingsverhaal een ratjetoe van allerhande scheppingsverhalen die in die tijd ook door andere religies werden aangehangen. Dus Genesis is al een creatieve spin off van andere vertelsels. Daarmee doet het in wezen dus niets af aan enig ander vertelsel.

Geachte heer van der Ham,

1. Het Genesisverhaal afzetten tegen het Symposion is problematisch, zoniet raar: appels en niet eens meer peren, eerder appels en auto's: het zijn echt totaal, maar dan ook totáál, andere tekstsoorten.

2. Plato laat een fictieve gast een dronken vermakelijk gesprek voeren, waarvan de inhoud, los van de context van het hele werkje, evenzeer homo- of vrouw-onvriendelijk geïnterpreteerd worden kan.

3. Lees de Nederlandse vertaling van Koolschijn.

1. Problematisch voor wie? Boris maakt duidelijk, dat het inderdaad een heel ander soort teksten zijn. Het verhaal van Plato sluit veel beter aan bij de moderne moraal, ondanks de ouderdom.

2. Ik ken het verhaal, en ik zou niet weten hoe ik het als homo- of vrouwonvriendelijk zou moeten interpreteren.... leg eens uit?

3. Waarom? Een vertaling is een vertaling. Als Koolschijn iets belangrijks toe zou voegen, zou het een onbetrouwbare vertaler zijn.

1 Beste Leidenaar123, dit is een column, dus is het de bedoeling dat je een stelling betrekt. Natuurlijk is dit verhaal op een andere wijze ontstaan dan Genesis. Maar dat geldt voor zoveel 'verhalen' over de schepping. Mijn punt is: zowel Genesis als het verhaal uit Symposium zijn 'verhalen', niet echt. Beiden zijn niet wetenschappelijk juist, maar kunnen wel als metafoor dienen.

@Withamask Well, the vlog is about the power of stories.. And the fact that in the Plato story Gods are mentioned shouldn't be a problem. They are just figures in the made-up story.

Hmm, you diqualify everyone who attachs value to (parts of) the story of Adam, Eve and creationism and talk (instead of that story) about another nice story with (I do agree) nice values. In what way do you call this better? Because of the interpretation? Again, the story which you tell about has good values. But these are other values. Don't set the whole story aside because of a doubtful clarificition. You can do better than that. :)

@krisspel Well, the Plato story is nice because it more inclusive than the adam and eve story. But the vlog is also about the fact that alternative, old stories can be nice too.
