  • Good idea, only I'm thinking it would get more comfortable if you cut 2 sticks and carved a notch at the end part and put the sticks in between the 2 main side ropes to keep them spread apart, that way you shouldent get as squeezed up when in the hammock

  • Dave I'm a hammock hanger do you ever go out and hang with anyone in Ohio from hammock forums.net

  • hi dave i made one of these hammock and when i got in it the outside of the rope would squeeze me but how i fixed it was i got a piece of wood and drilled 2 holes in it and slipt the rope in the holes and tied 2 knots to hold the plank of wood and i did this on both sides and this made it more comfortable and it does not squeeze me any more thanks dave for the great idea

  • yes hes the guy from dual survival.

  • Aren't you that guy off of dual survival?

  • Dave, I had my 14-year-old son watch this very informative video At the part where you said there could be multiple uses for a net like that, he grinned real big and said "Yeah, tyin' up women!" I guess I'm going to have my hands full! LOL!

  • Hey Dave, i got a Bear Grylls knife for Christmas, the "ultimate knife" one, theres some contravercy going around saying its a piece of crap, it hasnt broke on me yet, but i would like to know if you approve of this knife, please comment back

  • oh i just thought of something else, for making knots / hammocks / nets for assorted uses - check out the art of macrame' , i learned all sorts of knots from that.

  • you guys may think it an odd place to find survival info, but Jean Auel really did put a lot of research together in her books/ the series ' The Clan of the Cave Bear ' i learned a lot of survival info from that series, from which plants are good for what and surviving alone, in the middle of nowhere, even if you don't like the story line you could still gain by reading it, even teaches about pit traps, tracking deer, seriously all sorts of info :)

  • you could also use the net to keep your food off the ground away from preditores and to help carry your food/ deer etc.. especially if you have too much for one person to really carry you could attach the net to a tripod type drag pole with a single point dragging the ground and the front part over your shoulders or about your hips/ waist - depending on how heavy a load you have to carry and what is easier for you to pull :) i learned a lot reading Jean Auel's cave bear books, check them out.

  • My room mate has this Huge Stuffed animal that's always in the way. So using a cheap Dollar Store Twine, I made a Hammock in the corner of the room for the toy. You were the inspiration to do it. and Thanks For the Vid. No I just Might go get some Paracord a Make a real One. Thanks again

  • Would 100 ft of paracord from your website work

  • Pretty cool info.... Awesome tips and trick.

  • I use a net hammock but making one like that could be better. Using Trotline (under 10 bucks for 250 feet or so) in a square net I could tie off to 2, 3 or 4 points.

Quilting it to keep warm in the snow would take some more challenge and thinking but what doesn't with this kind of outfitting?

Saw a bit of this on Dual Survival. Happy to see a better demonstration.

    Thanks much.

  • Thanks to this I realize I can build a shelter up in the trees.

  • Awesome. I'm going to use this on the next field trip for my outdoor living class, and I'm also going to use it for the rest of my life.

  • Hey I love this video and was wondering what did you do for the ends of the hammock like how did you tie them ? Please reply back thanks

  • @dbird209 if i remember what i've learned, you could tie the ends in a slip knot fashion so they don't tighten up too much from the weight - wrap the ends separately a few rounds around the tree so it don't slip then do the slip knot :) try different ways to see which way you like best, also remember if your hands get too cold for whatever reason its hard to untie a knot with cold hands, slip knots work good for many reasons.

  • Hey Dave here is a tip... If you sleep with your boot or shoes off you need to put the in a tree or a high place so snakes or spider don't get into them. Also always make sure you always beat your boots or shoes before you put them on. Just letting you know if you didn't know. Great Video Keep it up!!! =)

  • @SurvivalistOutdoors Another boot idea: I've seen people sharpen a couple of strait branches and pound them part way into the ground. Then they just stick the boot down over top of the stick, keeping it up off the ground and away from critters. I've done it and it works great, it even kept the insides dry in some light rain (I didn't have the sense to put the branches under my tarp shelter.) Just make sure you get some good long branches and your set.

  • could you use paracord instead

  • Excellent video and useful knowledge. I followed your example and made a rope hammock about 2.5' wide. I'm a big guy and it held my weight fairly well althought not extremely comfortable. Just right for my wife though. Not bad for my first attempt, but I would make it longer and wider in future attempts. Thanks for your knowledge!

  • Hey Dave, I find true value in your efforts to pass on what you know! Keep up the great inspiring work!

  • Hey Dave, I find true value in your efforts to pass on what you know! Keep up the great inspiring work! jahhim

  • how much paracord did you use

  • just finished mine. all 550 cord and i'm proud as can be of it haha!!

  • I'm going to make one :)

  • useing the rope net method you can take two small trees and make a cott or a medical carry mat also

  • As a back pack configuration the net hammock looks perfectly suited to pack a dressed game animal back to your main location. In the 25th ID I would use my poncho and some Para-cord to make a hammock for night shelter. It would close together over the top and keep the mosquitoes at bay. I did try one of those store bought hammocks once, the knots were a bit uncomfortable till I added the ground mat as a cushion. Yet nothing beat the Poncho Hammock. Keep the good stuff coming brother.

  • i love your show with cody and you're a beast to cut your self and put black powder on it and burn but i just can't find the video for how to do those knots for the middle part of the hammock can you point me in the direction of that video!!!!

  • @heyheyheyimhappy15 Part 1 of the vid.

  • i will def try this one

  • Backpack!

  • Dave, I think I am going to try a smaller one with paracord first (since I have a metric shit ton of it). Thinking of putting two eye bolts on the wall of my garage so that I can tie inside:) One of my favorite vids so far. Great work- George

  • how did you tie it onto the tree because i don't think normal knots would suffice

  • you could weave natural veg into it and utilize it as a hunting blind or some kind of hide as well.

  • you, sir, are the man. Ive been looking all over for a hammock that i could make out of 550 cord without a gauge stick. i really appreciate the upload.

  • Jlsumpter that's what I made mine out of it turned out great it's so light I can wrap it around my pack and it's very useful other than just to sleep in like Dave said you can wrap it around your pack or use it as one and you could put things in it and hoist in a tree if your in an area where there are bears and I could go on and tell you all the things you could use it for but you could probably guess most of them any ways

  • hey are you the dude from dual survival? oh and you are very awsome

  • hey dave how effective would a hammock like this be if made out of mil spec paracord

  • hey dave what knifes do you carry ? and where could i get a fire steel

  • @jachawk11 wildernessoutfittersarechery com

  • iv just bought one for 20 pounds

  • dude dave thank you so much ive been looking for a video on how to make a hammock and this is the first one i have seen that wasnt a blanket with some half hitches on the ends

keep up the good work and take care

  • Alright so I made one of these today? I used 200 ft of 1/8 and 50 ft of 3/8 rope. It turned out great for my son, however I used 14 1/8 ropes and it turned out a little small for my taste and after tying it up to the tree it started trying to close up on my son like your did. I too a 1x3 board about 2 1/2 ft long and put in between the two 3/8 rope on one end, it creates the perfect amount of room for shoulders and tightens the 1/8 netting for more head support. Great job and thanks Dave!

  • I really enjoyed the video too. I took some twine I had laying around and practiced making a fishing net. I found a sapling and bent it into the shape of a fishing creel and tied the net to it and then lashed the whole thing to a longer pole I cut from another tree and made a net. I'm proud of it, but I'm not sure twine is the best material, I haven't tested it yet. But it was a blast to make and that's what it's all about! By the way, it's great seeing you on dual survival!

  • Hey Dave I have an idea for the hammock. You could take a couple of sticks and notch them on each end big enough for the 3/8 to slide into and weave one through each end to create a spreader bar for each end, and then just come up a couple feet off each end and tie the two ropes together so that you have a single doubled line to go to each tree instead of having to tie off to four trees.

  • @willyzook he doesnt make vids anymore... sorry to say. He's to busy with the show i guess

  • Thanks so much for the info. I've wanted a hammock for a while. I'm picking up some rope tomorrow.

  • Made two of these from an old vollyball net i found in the woods. one fore me and one for my friend. they're comfy

  • thats awesome dude

  • I bought a mesh hammock at a military surplus store for 25 bucks. It's not a dd, treklight, or hennessy but it'll do for now.

  • Would it be ok to make this out of type III paracord with maybe smaller squares?

  • Crazy nice hammock!!!!it was like perfect. And 1 question how many feet of rope did u use

  • I liked the multipurpose usage idea.

  • Great series, 5star and favorite!

  • where can I find the three inch cord??

  • look at home depot or like walmart.

  • i dig the back pack!

  • You can also tie the hammock out in a lean to fashion, and cover it with leaves or tree bows to make a lean too shelter. Great Idea Dave!!!...thanks for your knowledge and trainngs.

  • Great videos. I've enjoyed everyone of them. Thank you!

  • 5/5 great video mate

  • Just finished building my hammock , had a blast doing it too.I used 18 strands of para cord,it ended up being 6' x 3'6".I made mine bigger cause I am bigger. Gonna try it out tomorrow. Thanks for this one too Dave.5/5*****

  • very instructive video Dave ,nice work for the first try !!!

  • Dave, another awesome vid. We need to contact some networks man. You should have your own show, seriously brother.

  • man you look like your having a good time.

    inspiring.

  • Holly S, a backpack too. Yeah, I have hundreds of 550 cord, and 1200lb cord that I will always take with me. Making stuff like this will not only help pass time and occupy time if you're lost, but as you see can do more than just give you a nice chair/bed. Thanks again WO, and keep the videos coming. Us newbies and advanced outdoors people can really utilize this good info. Peace.

  • where can i get a t shirt

  • his website

  • another great use of the net, would be to move materials, from wood, to leaves.

  • dave i was randomly watching funny videos of guys misfiring guns on youtube when i somehow found one of your videos under the "related videos". I have spent all day watching your videos and i have been so impressed. All you videos are awesome but while watching this hammock develop i started laughing and thought what a stud! haha. This video is kick ass. Thank you for all these videos!

    Tyler Bokinsky

  • I wonder how hard it would be to use something like this in combination with local, natural foliage to make a ghillie suit? Maybe have the grid smaller?

Either way, sooo many uses! Awesome video, Dave! Loving the common man series! 5/5!

  • multiple uses for that net...just what you want in your self-reliance pack/kit.

    excellent vid dave. 5*s

    thanks

    M

  • keep them comin man.awesome vid

  • Dave, the HEEEEeemoungeous rolls of chute cord on ebay are about 50BUCKS..1200 feet, and that's ALOT of hammocks

  • good job Dave.

  • keep the common man stuff comming. Try that net as an improvised bench rest for a rifle, I've used it for long range shots and it works great. More versatile and easier then bringing a bench into the woods with you.

Just loop it over a branch, adjust the height to where you want to be and lay the rifle in the netting. The only problem you might face is in high winds but I haven't run into that one yet.

  • thanks dave, great project. you have the the admiration and respect of many.

your ok even if you are a yankee ohio boy......lol

  • hi dave just wondering if you'd be able to tell us the weight of that hammock and/or maybe suggest a lighter matierial that one could used without limmiting the strength. an excellent vid this was something that I was already considering to build and this just confirmed the validity of my idea. thanxs and keep up the good work.

  • 550 cord would work. It holds 550 lbs, and is pretty thin.

  • Hi Dave!

    really nice vid.

    I like it alot.

    but...

I have a small problem.i´m from sweden and we use cm and m insted of inches and foot so do you you a long the ropes should be in cm or m?

  • u rock

  • great video

  • I wonder if making a spacer bar for each end would work? then the ends wouldn't bunch up and force you to curl up, possibly in a uncomfortable position.

  • Great job Dave on a lot of useful info. I really love your videos' I'll be making a hammock for sure.

  • My wife was gonna buy me a hammock for Fathers day, but now i think i will just tell her to buy me the rope and i will make my own...Once again, Great stuff Dave...

  • I'm really enjoying this "common man's camp" series, Dave. Great ideas, especially if you are on a budget. I'm definitely going to make one of these hammocks for summer, looks pretty comfortable.

  • dave , thanks for all you do . great video

  • I'd really hate to run into that on a dirtbike or 4 wheeler!! Thanks Dave.

  • man this seems like it would be a major time and energy burn.

  • not really.. it would keep you occupied as hell though. But once you've made one... the only thing you'll have payed for is paracord or w/ you use. =)

  • Cheers. I have tried making a cast net using a netting needle, but your method looks much easier and quicker. This looks like a great project for the summer. Thanks for all your effort and videos.

  • ur next vid should be making or trying to make a ghillie suit

  • Another great vid dave. Can't wait to get started on one.

  • very cool :)

  • I have been watching your videos. You are very knowledgable. There arnt many vids that I see that show me things I didnt learn as a kid. But your's are full of all the information I am looking for. Thank you. I admire your spirit also.

  • Great video, Dave! I'm gonna make one to relax in.

  • Tried this a few times, but I think I'm going to try again. I'm probably going to spend the little extra and go with 4-strand paracord for the web.

How long did you make the lines of the web? That calculation is the part that always eluded me.

  • Can you show us how to set it up as a net style trap? That would kick ass!!!

hell yeah some nice ideas in there. If you fit some plastice to the netting (removable idealy) theres unlimited opportunity. With the hammok remeber you can always fit sticks into the ends if you want to spread it.

I would like a shuttle (for netting) for some day but this method works for today. Good video topic it was a pleasure to watch and you re kicked started my mind on this, thank you.

  • That settles it. I'm making one. Thanks Dave!

  • Great video series Dave. Could you do a video showing how you would incorporate the mosquito net with the hammock? Thanks for all your videos and keep it up!

  • I will definately use this quite a bit. It's been raining day after day her in Indy and I'm tired of waking up soaked! Thanks Dave!

  • 5 STARS!!!

  • Awsome Awsome series Keep up the Great work I'm learning a lot and also figureing out I wasn't as keen in the woods as i thought and a side note you have brought my kids and i closer by learning to do this training so a BIG thank you

  • Wow, great idea! I think I'm gonna try this one. It will definitely last longer, than those crappy lightweight hammocks I saw in the trekking store, its much cheaper, plus I have the good feeling that I made it with my own hands.

    Keep up the good work!

  • EXCELLENT series as always Dave!!! I will defintely try this. Also, are you carrying the Alice pack in this video it didnt look like an Alice?

  • You are a legend. I have watched a lot of videos on YouTube and I love what ur about. "the common man". please keep up the great work.

  • great series and other uses for it i hope ur nephew likes it or if you keep it as a trophy but as a deer trap i would probably weight it down and defiantly tie it off wouldn't wanna lose my bed or get dragged 5* and fave.

  • thanks dave love the videos

  • ty for going back to the basci s

  • nice vid dave,i never thought of a hammock as being so versitile, now i would consider it for part of my shelter system..thanks and keep on keepin on brother...always remember "give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, feed a fish a man and he wll eat for weeks"..........

  • you da man!!!!!!!! you make the best videos.

  • I love this. a convertible hammock, trap and net backpack all in one! awesome Dave!

  • You know Dave, you could use that to make an insulated cape too, weaving grass into it, then throw your blanket over it, probably keep you very warm!

  • great video! always wanted to know how to make a net.

  • Great video's dave, not to mention one more way to carry the ever useful, rope or paracord! in a S/situation, you could undo it you know what i mean... Thanks.5/5

  • Hay Dave love your vids. Just woundering if you could make a hammock using a wool blanket or tarp like one person said somewhere down below in comments. 5/5

  • Check out my vid from last year the Versa Shelter Hammock Option.

  • Thanks I will.

  • can you fish with that?

  • dave i love common man series and this vid was good to but you need to make a vid on how to make a fishing pole that is flexable so i can try it at my place in ohio also

  • look for any kind of natural cane growing in your area that is at least 3/4 an inch in diameter at the base. This will work for a fishing pole for catching smaller fish of about 4 pounds or less, basically pan fish. My grandpa used one for years, and something like that would work great in a survival situation, because you want to catch more smaller fish anyway.

  • I like how my grandfather caught fish just walked into the river and out came 5 fish bare hands... and everyone wouldnt belive me when I told them we walked into the river and just threw them out in less then 2 seconds.. in out come fish... I rather just find a stick with a fork in he middle and add a barb to the top to catch fish.. in rivers works great just need to know were to look in the river..

  • dave,

Good video, i heard you talking about fishing, do you think you could make a video on how to make you own hooks for fishing, or other uses such as hooking togather rope, but many a size 6 or 10 wire or natural fiber fishing hook.

    Thanks

  • I am liking the Common Man series.

  • awsome love theses vidios dave great job bro. thnx

  • great job dave 5/5

  • great video dave

  • Isn't it a bit wasteful to cut the rope? Sure if you have natural cordage it wouldn't matter, but I 'd say if you have one piece of rope you'd want to be able to reuse it if you need to. I was once taught how to make a type of stretcher with a long piece of rope without cutting it, by just folding the rope in half and weaving the end through it. Can't be hard to do something similar and make a net or hammock.

Anyway as always a great vid.

  • Pretty cool and awesome video.

If your not into all the time, effort and expense you can pick up a descent "Travel Hammock" or "Backpack Hammock" for under $30. Something to look into as well.

  • Some truckers have a smaller version of cargo netting that they use to secure their loads with. I got several of them from the guy who supplies the local hardware store, and have used them to make Ghillie suits for my son and I, as well as small hammocks/net bags for securing food high in a tree away from bears. Great video though, I had never figured out how to tie the knots that way before. 5/5

  • hey dave have you ever thought about using the imps-net...or do you know anything about it...its supposed to only cost around fifteen bucks from brigade quartermasters and can be used for alot of things including a fishing net...just a thought but maybe you know something about it or could do a vid on it or something ive been curious about them for a while i just cant find any good info on them...

great vid by the way 5 stars

  • Great Vid ! I have been wanting to buy one but they have been deemed illegal to sell due to safety issues. A net hammock like that has a great weight to use ratio and is a valuable piece of kit. I Think as a pack it would make a great game carrier for a quartered deer or carrying firewood back to camp. Also it would work really well as a stationary blind for still hunting tie it up attach some cover and there you go.

  • You are absolutley correct man, I know I have heard 10-12 uses for this thing over and above the ones I mention so far!

  • @wildernessoutfitters i think the best use for rope hammocks of this sort like the rotcho super hammock, is in case of E&E, scale a tree with you and a buddy, or just you, toss one side to the other guy, hook it up, and bunk, your high off of the ground to avoid scent hounds and human sight(better than in a lean-to)

  • Love this video... I have seen this in survival books before and thought... I need to make one of these, Now after seeing it done makes me want to that much more.... For me the best vids are the ones that inspire me to get off my ass and do something and this one has done that. Thank you... Your the man Dave

  • awesome video!

  • Awesome!!!!

  • Awesome vid. Again thanks Dave.

  • Looks like you have enough excess rope to even tie a swiss seat for rapelling.

  • dude your amazing man i love your will to try anything 5*

  • i was taught that for making fishing nets, take the 7 strands out of 550 paracord so u get 7x the length of one piece of paracord and its smaller in diameter which is better served for catching fish (using the same netting method as shown in the vid)... this saves on supplies and maximizes utility

    5stars

  • excellent 1st try buddy. great stuff! thanks i learned alot

  • WOW. I never ever thought of being able to do all that with just $20.

5 stars. You're awesome, Dave. Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • man i have seen evry video and man they just ceepon giting better

  • tie some local debris on and you have a makeshift ghillie suit.

sturdy sapling, release switch and paracord you have live game trap.

  • nevermind, I commented before the video was thru playing...dave mentioned the above.

  • You could net large carp, yes they are edible, eaten all over the world except here. 5/5

  • 5/5m8

  • The hammock is an absolute must here in SE Texas if you sleep outside. Fire-ants will eat you alive if you are on the ground. A Tent can provide a nice shelter, but you must use a cot to sleep on. I have found several carcasses of small game and even young deer that have fallen prey to this 6 legged enemy!!

  • awesome vid Dave! gave me some ideas. gonna have some fun now! thanks!

  • other ideas ( a blind , two sticks= stretcher, hanging gun sling, hanging basket chair, rope ladder, bear food hanger,

  • AWESOME MAN!

  • I need to ask, what video editing software do you use? just need to know.

also, THANK YOU, I was always looking for a net making video that wasn't complicated, your's fit the bill and helped a lot, thank you.

  • SONY

  • thanks

  • good for catching ground happy birds like guinea and turkey...

  • HECK YA!!!

  • i'm gonna have to retire my nylon hammock after hearing all these ideas thank you!!!!

  • Excellent job Dave.

  • I will have to make one of those. the multi-use aspect of the rope hammock justifies putting in all the work to make it.
