the characters i thought were very well written especially eli, but the story seemed really slow, the way they tried to use the people on the ship as the enemy, you can't complain with them doing that, the show would have gotten too repetitive with only the current fanbase watching, too bad no season
While I found myself turned off by SG-U on occasion due to its unrelentingly gloomy mood and rather slow story development, I've got to admit the acting and visuals were completely top notch. While it jettisoned the humour and warmth of SG-1 and SG-A, it also dumped the cliches and cheese. I'd definitely rate SG-U higher than Atlantis. I think SG-U was continuing to improve, but just like Star Trek: Enterprise, they cancelled this show when it was starting to hit its stride.

SGU was cancelled because it bombed, the network fucked up cancelling SGA, that show was watched loyally by its fans, hence the reason it got to 5 seasons but then the network shit on us by replacing a successful show with something fans just didnt want, if the network had spent the same amount of money on Atlantis im sure its ratings would have stayed strong enough for at least a further 3 seasons, there was still so many stories to tell, but hey, people always assume the grass is greener!
I always thought that the show got cancelled because the sci-fi fans couldn't cope with real characters who suffer, who are not heroes like in a fairy tale, who do the wrong things sometimes and fail sometimes, and are supsicious about each other and hate each other sometimes, who get into life threatening situations and actually have fear.
The show was so suspenseful. Every episoede I got a heart atack.
And I think it might be one of the best if not THE best Sci-fi show I'ver ever watched.
@SasuKrow no. the creators didnt want to put anymore english speaking aliens in it. the only aliens are animal like creatures on the different plaents. in other words the wild life there. also there are the blue aliens but who knows what they were to the story

@xbimpyx what do you mean? the reason why they speak English is because creating a new language for every planet you visit for a tv series in too expensive. I saw a doc on SG1, they loosely threw around but did not put in the show, the people on the planets speak a form of Goa'uld basic because most planets are slaves under them. The way the work the camera, the isolation, the need for food and supplies on a old broken down ship, conflict between the military and civis... BSG.
@SasuKrow this is star gate. nothing like bsg. but this is also not like normal star gate shows. the charachters are a lot more human than the other shows and real. their normal people. ppl say its bsg cause it involes real human drama, but its not some dramatic soap opary sci fi crap. it has lots of action and it gets intense.

I never liked Stargate Universe. I understand some people do, but I was a Stargate fan for a reason, and they changed almost all of those reasons. If I wanted to watch Battle Star Galactica I'd be watching Battle Star Galactica. I didn't actively dislike Stargate Universe until I realized that it was the persistent mistake that meant I would never see anything Stargate again.
You know what I think ruined SGU? The Lucian Alliance. The Destiny ship was literally billions of light years from Earth, yet the Lucian Alliance managed to get on it, WTF?!! Howcome Young didn't just close the Gate? Sure his friend would've died, but he risked the lives of 70 or 80 people for a Lucian Alliance traitor, who was in the military, and prepared to die for his country and to save the lives of everyone on the Destiny? They should have also focused on the aliens who were hunting them.
One area that SGU excelled at, was the interpersonal relationships between the characters... definitely made it into a different kind of show...but that was the whole point. Though, with that said, I agree with the previous poster...at times it seemed like a teen soap opera...sometimes it felt like it went nowhere.
This was a cool show indeed..and it sad that it got cancelled too soon....whats even more sad is what passes off for television nowadays...(keepin up with k, jersey shore...etc etc). We need shows like startrek and stargate to return to tv.....well, at least we have netflix.
On a side note....I personally enjoyed SG1 way more...that show had everything, great cast and story line... cool plots (minus the dam replicators)....overall it was entertaining.
This was Stargate's "Voyager." I liked the show but I don't really think there was much that could've been done differently apart from allowing the show to mature.

If only this had been how the series began after the SG movie. SGU is a proper follow on from the film, its got hardship, grit & darkness. real reflections on real hardships that happen in real life.Thats what made it great. I think this show would appeal to someone who doesn't like Stargate. What made SG1&Atlantis suck so bad was that the acting was awful the characters were un believable & the humour was pure Stilton cheese & life isnt like that

@Baseshocks SGU fans love the show I think primarily, because it takes the classic tropes of science fiction, but incorporates them into a modern, adult sci-fi character drama, rather than using them as cheap clichéd plot devices the way most sci-fi shows do these days. From our perspective, shows like Atlantis look like children's shows by comparison, and that's before we get onto the superior writing, acting and production quality...

@EnglandFCYouthWatch2 Sci-Fi shows have not been taken seriously for a very long time, as you know scifi fans get branded as light saber swinging kids who go to conventions... BSG turned it around, although BSG was based on "Space Above and Beyond" made in the 90's. Sci-fi is very expensive and a very risky investment. SGU should have followed what BSG did, first a tv movie then a 13 episode first season. Regardless of production value to get a boarder audience they needed to tweak a few things
@EnglandFCYouthWatch2 check out "Space Above and Beyond" their is more action yes, their is less relationships, their is the same amount of character drama and emotion... Yes we understand SGU is a different type of show... but what made so many turn away is the focusing stones... they focused too much of the relationships on earth rather then on the ship... they were almost 2 different shows. by the end of the second season they fixed it saying the alien race has one of the stones.

Just because SGU at the start had a very small target audience does not mean it was the perfect sci-fi show to everyone. BSG did it well.

Pretty cool show. I recently got into SG1 and loved the majority of that series. SGU was alright, and different. Definitely better than most of the crap we have right now...(jersey shore, kim kard, etc, etc)
Its pathetic though how people revert to making fun of "rubber face" aliens and other various props used in SG1,lol. Not everything can be CG.... SGU was cool...but it never felt like it actually went anywhere....nevertheless, they should have kept it for a couple more seasons atleast.
If only they'd made the show look more like a character drama and less like an action adventure the show might have actually found the audience it deserved.
I hate how this was cancelled after they found out the purpose for the ship, it was such a good idea! I did like SG-1 and SGA much better though. McKay and O'Neill made sure of that.

@SpeakerZoNHigH Why does it have to be? SG-1 and SGA were good series', but would you really want to see a third series that's exactly the same? This is far less campy and concetrates more on character development. Admittedly it has borrowed some stuff from Battlestar Galactica, but that's not bad since BSG was an excellent show.
@PLDGOR Even so, the Destiny has been travelling for millions of years with Ancients technology. I don't see how they could reach them with Asgard stuff.

SGU sucked HARD. More like a stupid reality TV style soap opera than stargate... 90% of the time the characters are talking about their emotions and feelings or hallucinating. It's miserable, depressing and boring. For some reason it seems to be always dark and somehow claustraphobic. I LOVED SG1 and SGA but this sucks. Only 2 characters are any good; Rush and Eli, the rest are crappy. The plot is so slow and so unengaging, i am forcing myself to watch the episodes. not many left thank God
They should of never of had the Ancient communication stones, or the Lucian alliance as the enemy at the end of season 1. The Characters should of been allowed to develop on their own, without Earth or any other of the characters from the previous series.

@theotherone50 thats one of the main points it failed, Stargate was not built on he said she said drama. But after all the spite i had over the cancellation of SGA, i did give the show a chance, a lot of it bothers me, i mentioned some of it in previous post.
The only reason this show was filmed the way it was, was to try and grab the new si-fi fans that got caught onto BSG by being more like it.

Heros, Firefly, Babylon 5, supernatural their are action sequences in all of them but most of the episodes are character based. in supernatural the main characters refuse to take their shirts off for the girl fans because its not part of the essence of the show (they do not want BS in it).

@theotherone50 Space Above and Beyond was pretty much copied by the new BSG on the character driven part. Aliens invade human colony, earth goes to war with a unknown species. every episode shows the emotion of the loss, it is one of the only shows before BSG to bring in characters give them a back story then kill them off. You truly feel attached to them threw the show, by the end of the first season you will have tears in you eyes because the show is over and something happens....

In space above and beyond they are marines their is no time for fucking around, they stay focus rested and fight or they die. Anyone can fill a show with likable characters, it's crafting characters that are three-dimensional and making their journey realistic and compelling that really takes talent, and is really good drama. Shows that cater to brains-off easy-viewing demographic are a dime a dozen, I want something a little more adult and a little more thought-provoking, and I doubt it in SGU. I feel sorry for anyone who didn't.

The hand held camera and shooting style is made to induce the sense you are among the crew, and make the setting more realistic, it has absolutely nothing to do with "making action sequences more exciting". It's not a good show because people have sex no, only a philistine (seemingly such as yourself) might think so, it was a good show because it approached the classic tropes of sci-fi in a realistic and adult way like no other.

While I found myself turned off by SG-U on occasion due to its unrelentingly gloomy mood and rather slow story development, I've got to admit the acting and visuals were completely top notch. While it jettisoned the humour and warmth of SG-1 and SG-A, it also dumped the cliches and cheese. I'd definitely rate SG-U higher than Atlantis. I think SG-U was continuing to improve, but just like Star Trek: Enterprise, they cancelled this show when it was starting to hit its stride.

SGU was cancelled because it bombed, the network fucked up cancelling SGA, that show was watched loyally by its fans, hence the reason it got to 5 seasons but then the network shit on us by replacing a successful show with something fans just didnt want, if the network had spent the same amount of money on Atlantis im sure its ratings would have stayed strong enough for at least a further 3 seasons, there was still so many stories to tell, but hey, people always assume the grass is greener!

I always thought that the show got cancelled because the sci-fi fans couldn't cope with real characters who suffer, who are not heroes like in a fairy tale, who do the wrong things sometimes and fail sometimes, and are supsicious about each other and hate each other sometimes, who get into life threatening situations and actually have fear.
The show was so suspenseful. Every episoede I got a heart atack.
And I think it might be one of the best if not THE best Sci-fi show I'ver ever watched.

@xbimpyx what do you mean? the reason why they speak English is because creating a new language for every planet you visit for a tv series in too expensive. I saw a doc on SG1, they loosely threw around but did not put in the show, the people on the planets speak a form of Goa'uld basic because most planets are slaves under them. The way the work the camera, the isolation, the need for food and supplies on a old broken down ship, conflict between the military and civis... BSG.

If I wanted to watch Battle Star Galactica I'd be watching Battle Star Galactica. You know what I think ruined SGU? The Lucian Alliance. The Destiny ship was literally billions of light years from Earth, yet the Lucian Alliance managed to get on it, WTF?!! Howcome Young didn't just close the Gate? Sure his friend would've died, but he risked the lives of 70 or 80 people for a Lucian Alliance traitor, who was in the military, and prepared to die for his country and to save the lives of everyone on the Destiny? They should have also focused on the aliens who were hunting them.

One area that SGU excelled at, was the interpersonal relationships between the characters... definitely made it into a different kind of show...but that was the whole point. Though, with that said, I agree with the previous poster...at times it seemed like a teen soap opera...sometimes it felt like it went nowhere.
But of course SG1 isnt without its flaws either.

This was a cool show indeed..and it sad that it got cancelled too soon....whats even more sad is what passes off for television nowadays...(keepin up with k, jersey shore...etc etc). We need shows like startrek and stargate to return to tv.....well, at least we have netflix.
On a side note....I personally enjoyed SG1 way more...that show had everything, great cast and story line... cool plots (minus the dam replicators)....overall it was entertaining.

If only this had been how the series began after the SG movie. SGU is a proper follow on from the film, its got hardship, grit & darkness. real reflections on real hardships that happen in real life.Thats what made it great. I think this show would appeal to someone who doesn't like Stargate. What made SG1&Atlantis suck so bad was that the acting was awful the characters were un believable & the humour was pure Stilton cheese & life isnt like that

SGU was an attempt to resurrect the franchise, inject new blood. save the show. but it was too late. @EnglandFCYouthWatch2 Sci-Fi shows have not been taken seriously for a very long time, as you know scifi fans get branded as light saber swinging kids who go to conventions... BSG turned it around, although BSG was based on "Space Above and Beyond" made in the 90's. Sci-fi is very expensive and a very risky investment. SGU should have followed what BSG did, first a tv movie then a 13 episode first season. Regardless of production value to get a boarder audience they needed to tweak a few things

Pretty cool show. I recently got into SG1 and loved the majority of that series. SGU was alright, and different. Definitely better than most of the crap we have right now...(jersey shore, kim kard, etc, etc)
Its pathetic though how people revert to making fun of "rubber face" aliens and other various props used in SG1,lol. Not everything can be CG.... SGU was cool...but it never felt like it actually went anywhere....nevertheless, they should have kept it for a couple more seasons atleast.

SGU sucked HARD. More like a stupid reality TV style soap opera than stargate... 90% of the time the characters are talking about their emotions and feelings or hallucinating. It's miserable, depressing and boring. For some reason it seems to be always dark and somehow claustraphobic. I LOVED SG1 and SGA but this sucks. Only 2 characters are any good; Rush and Eli, the rest are crappy. The plot is so slow and so unengaging, i am forcing myself to watch the episodes. not many left thank God

@theotherone50 thats one of the main points it failed, Stargate was not built on he said she said drama. But after all the spite i had over the cancellation of SGA, i did give the show a chance, a lot of it bothers me, i mentioned some of it in previous post.
The only reason this show was filmed the way it was, was to try and grab the new si-fi fans that got caught onto BSG by being more like it.
Other things i do not understand, damaged ship right? they do not trust Russ....

@theotherone50 Space Above and Beyond was pretty much copied by the new BSG on the character driven part. Aliens invade human colony, earth goes to war with a unknown species. every episode shows the emotion of the loss, it is one of the only shows before BSG to bring in characters give them a back story then kill them off. You truly feel attached to them threw the show, by the end of the first season you will have tears in you eyes because the show is over and something happens....

Anyone can fill a show with likable characters, it's crafting characters that are three-dimensional and making their journey realistic and compelling that really takes talent, and is really good drama. Shows that cater to brains-off easy-viewing demographic are a dime a dozen, I want something a little more adult and a little more thought-provoking, and I doubt it in SGU. I feel sorry for anyone who didn't.

The hand held camera and shooting style is made to induce the sense you are among the crew, and make the setting more realistic, it has absolutely nothing to do with "making action sequences more exciting". It's not a good show because people have sex no, only a philistine (seemingly such as yourself) might think so, it was a good show because it approached the classic tropes of sci-fi in a realistic and adult way like no other.
