  • recent fan. ^^

  • ZOMbies.

  • Ah, it's soofYAN

  • It isn't hard to tell what the reporter thinks of him.

  • Down with MTV, Up with Sujan!

  • My God, can this man wear a T-shirt!

  • Nothing is too dynamic for Sufjan.

  • i love elliott smith so fucking much

  • sufjan is better that both bright eyes and elliot smith

  • @00supermario WOW, no. You can't compare those three amazing artists, never saying that again.

  • Oh please marry me :3

  • Comment removed

  • @MrReidLynn I think your mouth just took a shit......cuz that is what you are talking. Glad your opinion doesnt matter in this world. That way the rest of us can enjoy his music.

  • :)

  • @MrReidLynn I agree that Elliot Smith is a bad comparison but "consistently bad sound"? Have you actually listened to his records or are you basing your opinion on a few bad sound clips? This guy's genius, granted he doesn't stand alone, is rooted in his unconventional methods of creating beautiful music (good sound). "Good sound" is what makes Sufjan Stevens stand apart from the all the mediocrity of mainstream.

  • @museblock

I just really like Elliott. I got mad. I hate MTV not Mr. Stevens.

  • @MrReidLynn Well, I can't argue with that. MTV has sucked for, going on, ten years now... probably longer. If someone is wanting to get educated on good music, MTV should be the last place they turn to. Even when they do get their hands on good music they somehow manage to take a piss on it. Saying "hear it first" as their tag line is BS. Me and my friends have been listening to Sufjan Stevens since 2001... and so have many other fans of his. They just want a piece of his pie.

  • love him!!

  • 'mtv' and 'sufjan' shouldn't be in the same sentence.

  • Skip to 0:53 for Sufjan. You'll quite possibly thank me...

  • Glad to see him getting some much-needed recognition, but these people aren't doing him much justice nor capturing the emotion which his music evokes.

  • Let us get this straight. MTV should NEVER. EVER. EVER. even CONSIDER mentioning sufjan ever again.I know it is my duty to wish artists well and alll.....but the same people watching nicki manaj and drake don't even deserve to know sufjan's name.

  • when she said indie music I almost drop kicked my computer

  • MTV has sucked so much corporate cock it has turned into the monster that music rebels against .

  • can't wait to hear his Virginia album, hope he isn't starting left to right from his home state, because then i'm going to have to wait 40 years XD

  • @sTapleEVA He's not making an album for each state any more. Unless you count 'Adz' a state. Seriously, though, he's not doing it, he even said himself.

  • I wouldn't quite compare him to Bright Eyes. But, he has a few great songs.

  • @Thehappypages I wouldn't compare him to bright eyes either, being that he is soulful and substantive rather than whiney and overwrought

  • i love how mtv feels they found sufjan just because he became so popular so suddenly. and whats even funnier is that they compare bright eyes to sufjan stevens. when sufjan stevens becomes a bandwagon artist, the world will end

  • THEE greatest song writer of all time. Cannot be compared to anyone.

  • @lastmondaypast1 noooo regina specktor!

  • @sTapleEVA lol no. i dont think she's nearly as good of a writer. she's pretty generic.

  • @lastmondaypast1 you sound like a contrarian. have you not heard "sampson" songs version?

  • @sTapleEVA yes. I heard her most famous song. Sufjan stevens has epic wordplay and songwriting. ive never seen better songwriting in my life. and i've looked.

  • @lastmondaypast1 guess it's just taste then, but after 50 albums in 10 years, he is going to get boring...quick

  • I just ate an apple, you guys should too ! specifically royal gala's! i love 'em ! crisp, just almost sweet, and not too sour. awesome.

  • "comes with a sword" .. the Word of God

  • wait...MTV has music?

  • The first song they sampled is in an INSANE time signature. Its in 7+6/4 13/4 doesn't even work! along with Kalgary! one of the few bands I've heard who can pull that off.

  • @calico992 which song is this?

  • @ThevanGoghBlues God IS love Jesus is lord.

  • As long as you dont confuse 'silly' with being clever. Silly is only impressive to those who think they're being impressive.

  • Damn hot gloomy boy ~"~

  • i despise MTV

  • 0:40 is the start

  • This music sucks. Simply put. Sick of artists promoting Satan as well.Enough already. We get it, you love the NWO, Satan, demons, etc. Super!

  • Fuck, I hate MTV so much.

  • Any relation to Cat Stevens??...

  • soof-yan? or suff-jun?

  • @ck675 They said it like twenty times in the video..

  • @ck675 Soof-yan

  • ugh... mtv

  • I want to punch MTV in the face for a multiple of reasons......

  • Such ignorance on the part of MTV, they are not "simple songs" and..."you hear it first"? please just because it took you forever to find out about him doesn't mean nobody else has..

  • A little Cat stevens style

  • @leapoffaith24

where do u know that he is christian ? His parents were part of a community called Subud what is an islamic community where his Persian name comes from. Maybe he is a Muslim.

    DONT PANIC ITS JUST ISLAM!

  • @armagigolo He IS a Born Again Christian. True, his parents did come from that community and that's where his name came about, but he has stated that he is a Christian. He just doesn't want to classify his music as "Christian music."

  • i bet his music is that good just because his name is persian xD

  • an angel introduced me into his music. True story Im not tryin to be a wiseguy or anything

  • you hear it first? of course, mtv, always the ambassadors of the best music

  • She's never listened to Sufjan before...

  • gave up on that whole every state thing lol

  • lol he sounds nothing like bright eyes

  • IM IN LOVE.

  • deeeeum that niggas sexy!

  • why must he be so handsomum

  • @bluehaloknickls I was so naïve to think god chose people to be intelligent and talented OR beautiful, not both.

  • Damn it. I've been saying his name wrong for months.

  • @welovepies Meh, I've always known the proper way of pronouncing it but I still choose to say "Soof-Jan" just b/c I like the way it sounds much better. Lol.

  • what a good looking man.

  • oh so thats how u pronounce his name.

  • they just want to get there grubby little paws on everything. "You hear it first" BS

  • @thehumancrisis And guess which grubby little guy accepted the MTV promotion? The world is not quite as simple as there's greedy companies and individual victims, my friend.

  • @thehumancrisis : For reals. MTV needs to fuck off. They can keep their LMFAOs and Lil waynes and Keshas and whatever the fuck else they are peddlin these days.

  • @thehumancrisis oh, all the great bands...

    it's messed up.

    MTV doesn't deserve him, haha.

  • "simple songs" wow what a terribly off characterization. even if it was meant in a positive way. i don't know how you could possibly call his music simple.

  • NOBODY that watches MTV heard this first. They heard it last, and probably shut off their fucking tv's and started lietening to shitty dub step. fuck fuck fuck shit fuckl motherfucker

  • Uh... he's really hot.

  • I'd like to be able to speak Sufjan's language.

  • I had no idea he did an interview with MTv. Then again, I don't watch Tv often... hardly ever. Anyway, people that listen to indie are just as annoying as people that listen to mainstream. Indie listeners think they're too cool and holy and, "Oh my God I'm as different as different comes I deserve a cookie for knowing something that appears to be unknown to the masses. Then mainstream listeners think they're cool because they know every word to a song that everyone knows every word too. Whack!!!

  • @1Lottery

Haha! Thanks for the rude awakening. I'm one of those too cool indie listeners but please do NOT confuse us with HIPSTERS!!! They're the 10% that make the rest of us look so bad. We're just annoyed at mainstream listeners cause they love such garbage music and praise themselves when encounter a musician who's been in the scene for YEARS (i.e., - Sufjan, Modest Mouse, etc.)

  • @almargakira You didn't budge my opinion what so ever. A lot of indie listeners think they're so open-minded & non-judgmental when they're the main ones to go bash another genre/artist. It's like their favorite thing to talk about is how much better their music is or how long they've known of an artist. Who gives a shit? It'll be the day you catch me listening to mainstream but I still respect it enough to not bash it. Y'all spent more time hating than commenting on his actual interview. SHIT!!!

  • @1Lottery I don't think it is fair for you to generalize everyone who listens to "indie" music. I love it because of how it sounds and the messages many indie artists have. I don't think I'm cool or better than anyone. I just enjoy that style of music.

  • @ImTestingSleeping I said, "A LOT OF INDIE LISTENERS"... meaning every pronoun after that refers to, "A LOT OF INDIE LISTENERS". I would never say everyone because then I'd be talking about myself and I most definitely do NOT fit the description I spoke of. So, I'm glad that you have felt the need to clarify where you stand because I as well do not think I am cooler or better and I as well JUST enjoy that style of music. Happy?!

  • @1Lottery Whichever one you are, you just insulted yourself.

  • @reltuButler Wrong! Chances are, I just insulted YOU!

  • OH GOD... MY IDOL ON MTV?! KILL ME NOW

  • Wow, MTV, you discovered Sufjan Stevens about 3 years after my 50-something year old aunt...pathetic...

  • @TheNatedogg56 HAHAHA YES! FUCK MTV

  • @luvndanestrin what bothers me is that these idiots act like no one had ever heard of Sufjan before, it's just so embarrassing that they're proclaiming the fact that they think a well established songwriter is some sort of up-and-coming artist...

  • @TheNatedogg56 What do you expect from MTV? Not only are they always about 6 years late on everything; but I would rather them NOT "discover" it at all. I don't EVER want Sufjan on MTV. I'm surprised he even was okay with it, himself since he generally shuns too much publicity and attention. This is why I don't even own a TV and haven't watched TV in 3 yrs.

  • WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT WOMAN AT THE BEGINNING? WHY IS SHE SO LOUD? haha

  • MTV doesn't deserve to interview someone as talented as Sufjan Stevens.

  • he's beautiful

  • even his birth name is indie how could you not be the king of indie rock

  • ASDFGHSJSK

Hearing people talking over his music is bugging me so much. It's like blaspheming.

  • marry me?

  • "good luck sufyawn"-interviewer. <<<FUCK YOU! and your quirky looks and your overkill smile! Sufjan IS the best artist that they've ever interviewed. usually you would see a big as recording studio with pop artist...but with sufjan, he keeps at home! i love this man, no homo. ;D

  • clearly these people have never heard elliott smith or bright eyes. actually can't believe how bad this is

  • Sounds like the Polyphonic Spree? Is that a joke? :P

I love him, by the way. :)

  • woah that's interesting. I kind of am anticipating his california album. it'll probably contain some songs about how ignorant people are and how corrupted they are by the media... and the gold rush.

  • compared to Elliott Smith and Conor Oberst?? Sufjan Stevens, you have my heart

  • he's so great. i can't wait to see him live. im going to die when he plays casimir pulaski day, decatur, and there are night zombies!

  • Nice work Sufjan. You and Mason J should be more famous.

  • It's almost funny that she seemed to make him out to be a weirdo. I don't know if I should laugh, or be annoyed...

  • Wow, MTV. Wow. Terrible comparisons. Terrible interview. The End. I can't believe Sufjan would agree to this.

  • @bohemianlove345 i too am outraged that mtv compared sufjan to bright eyes. wtf was that. hes so much better.

  • duf needs to get a reality check

  • I can't believe this! Never saw this on TV. MTV actually had an artist? How'd that slip by the powers that be? Then again, they USED to have music on "Music TV" before they officially dropped the Music from the logo/brand. I remember Tori Amos and other inspirations...now it's unwatchable scripted "reality" garbage.

  • Hm he is sexy......

  • leave it up to MTV to make something incredible sound so silly.

  • @Cantgrowastache its not incredible. Its crap.

  • Am I the only person that finds this disgustingly hilarious? The Polyphonic Spree meets Elliott Smith? Pure comedy!

I particularly love the "you hear it first" heading.

  • @humeanesque yeah that was an eye roller ..and man they killed it with the bright eyes comparison too....

  • thumbs down for the mtv lady talking about Sujfan stevens.

  • He should make an album about Maine.

  • Would Mr. Stevens appreciate these arguments concerning his music? I can't know, but I don't think so. Let's rejoice that we've found people who share our love for his fantastic compositions!

  • surprised they actually got sufjan on an interview......play his music!!!!!!!!!

  • HAha this dumb bitch needs to get her facts straight before parading her nonsense around. His song "Abraham" is NOT about Abraham Lincoln. Slap in the face to him for doing the interview and they couldnt even bother to get things right. But on the other hand, its hilarious.

  • @mynamekeisha well she is talking about illinoise, right? and there's a lyric in decatur about "abraham lincoln was the great emancipator."

but i agree, it's pretty hilarious

  • @mynamekeisha LOL. MTV can't even do a little research.but they do can research jersey shore!!! screw them.

  • @mynamekeisha Decatur on illinoise has a lyric about abe lincoln.

  • @mynamekeisha oh the irony

  • @barimaphone No actually, it isnt. Decatur isnt a song ABOUT abraham lincoln, it simply mentions him.. one time.. in a passing sentence. I could be wrong but with the rest of the nonsense she said in her interview she most likely is talking about the song "Abraham." Either way, I dont really care.

  • @mynamekeisha normally when something has a line in a song, the song is about it. decatur is about a lot of things. abraham lincoln being one of them. either way, you care enough to comment again

  • @barimaphone Either way stfu. Im not the only one who thought that. Quit filling my inbox with your replies.

  • @mynamekeisha nope you definitely are

  • @barimaphone guurl shut up before i cast a spell on you. And no im not, check the rest of the comments.. several ppl thought the same. Only the dumb mtv bitch knows who is right.

  • @mynamekeisha k so you and one other dumb bitch. lets look at it this way. when the mtv population hears a song is about abraham, instinct will tell them it's lincoln. unless they're a jew or theology major, which is pretty unlikely

  • @barimaphone Didn't your mother ever teach you not to talk back to your superiors?

  • "High art meets low art"

    Sophistikitsch.

  • @ratherconfused HAHA

  • i guarantee the interviewer had legitimately no idea what sufjan was talking about from 1:45 to 2:12. they don't understand the magnitude of what he's doing. mtv needs to give up.

  • MTV is obnoxious...I want to punch that lady in the face.

  • @amyjogonzalez Her voice hurts my ears.

  • Abraham is NOT about abraham lincoln. hahaha what a ditz

  • @Ostrander17 have you ever actually listened to decatur? "abraham lincoln was the great emancipator."

    don't call someone a ditz when you're a dumbass.

  • @TheStephenKent yeah, but darlin', the SONG Abraham off of seven swans is about the Biblical patriarch Abraham.

  • @TheMsKatieBeth yeah, but darlin', this INTERVIEW is clearly focusing on the Illinois album.

  • @TheStephenKent Darlin', the SONG Abraham is about the Biblical patriarch Abraham.

  • interview starts at 0:55

  • what the heck. i don't like that sufjan is on mtv at all. i agree.. 'it boy of indie' hahah what the hell.

  • love him!!

  • God, do I hate the way she talks about him sarcastically. Makes me want to form a rebellion, take over MTV, and show people what real music is....

  • what is mtv doing talking about music, anyway? wasn't there another real world marathon or cribs episode they could have put together?

  • Weird. Does everybody else can see the "Mtv" and "Sufjan Stevens" in the same title?

  • @dondempezar no i think it's a little offensive for him to be on MTV.

  • @dondempezar I thought it was another April Fool's joke, kind of like the Rosie Thomas/Sufjan Stevens love-child rumor...except over two months late...and a lot less funny

  • An American I'm not ashamed of

  • uhhh...sufjan is charms me. mtv...not so much.

  • Gak. Isn't MTV dead yet?

  • too... much.. editing transitions!

make it stop..! what the fuck. mtv.

only you could take an interview of sufjan stevens and turn it into something aesthetically offensive.

  • It's funny how she has no idea what the album is about.

  • god, MTV is so fucking annoying.

  • Apparently the '50 States Project' has come to a halt and died. True?

  • @theodosiusng true

  • he's a great musician. i adore him.

  • Haha, I always said SoofJohn Stevens and not Soof Yohn Stevens. lol

  • boy is that woman hideous

  • @04fergs oh.. it's a woman?

  • i listen to underground hip hop and all this heavy shit but i cant but help but having like 50 songs from this guy. hes very good

  • THE GIRL IS SO ANNOYINGGGGGGGG

  • Seriously Sufjan deserves this attention. BEST new artist MTV has ever talked about period!

  • this must have been before mtv stopped promoting good music.

  • @ehfuckit MTV never promoted good music. Ever.

  • if you guys lke sufjan and the michigan militia/the illinoise makers, check out half-handed cloud!

  • Seeing Sufjan on MTV is kind of like seeing Mozart on... MTV...

  • xD You've got a good point there.

  • lol love the comparison ^_^

  • seriously,

    he's a genius

its like, what is a musical genius doing on mtv. mtv doesnt ever support talent it seems

  • YES

  • @alphablitz1024 Or kind of like seeing a shitty musician on a shitty music channel. Fitting!

  • @jpastuch not cool bro. lol

  • @alphablitz1024

    Not.. Quite.

  • @alphablitz1024 yeah kind of makes me glad i didn't first learn about him on MTV, and rather heard his music first when a friend left it on my PSP after giving it to another friend... a couple months ago....

  • I hate seeing him on MTV, but I guess it's good for him... Getting publicity and what not. But I still like to think that I'm the only one who knows and is in love with him. :)

  • god this bitch is annoying. not sufjan, the reporter at the beginning.
