@vjmartinez88 shows how imature you are , if you can do better show it on youtube , that is why young jitterbugs like you will make a imature comment like thisa
Having jazz comp'd singers before, I must keep reminding myself that they're not like the rest of us [;^) The hands, etc. Doesn't take away from the marvelous rendition of the song. [I can hear spots where a nice bass line and brushes could really add something hot.]
please check out the melody, as written, and then give it another shot. These guys spent a lot of time "getting it right" and we instrumentalists, and vocalists, owe it to them to perform it right. the SECOND chorus is reserved for your improv--but please, let the first chorus, encompass the correct melody. (I'll be glad to email you a pdf of the correct melody!)
You pick at my words but ignore my point. I am familiar with the "Music Minus One" format, but used it as a general metaphor for the cookie-cutter, "correct" arrangements of tunes. I've attended the Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, and they handed out a list of "definitive recordings" of songs. In other words, the playalongs are based upon "correct" renditions.
There is a rich tradition in jazz of embellishing the melody, even on the opening chorus. To reproduce the melody exactly is not jazz.
Ella's rendition is still the best. K.D. Lang's is #2, but this one is almost as good.
This woman has a real talent for creative phrasing.
Linda's and Bette's are akin to Velveeta cheese; processed and artificial. Much of what Linda sings in English has that "sanitized for your protection" feel to it.
this is a carmichael song.ella has recorded it too but the definitive is still linda ronstadt, rounded off the melody and retuned into a beautiful pop ballad.but mostly its her strong pipes that lifted the ditty as if carmichael had written for her.forget all those false/doowop jazz renditions !!!
I think this woman has a very elegant stage presence. (SUNPERCH, what was this about her hands?!?)That whisky glass ofended my eye, very uncouth deed from a client(or may be the waiter)but she coped it with grace. Tonight it happend for the first time to me to hear this lady and I think she is a wonderful singer!
Hello Caitlin. We know all about you New Zealand lasses in the Uk. A few years ago we were all knocked for six with the arrival of Anita Wardell and her Brilliant bop singing. I think the Guitarist is playing far to fussy, you would sound much better on this if you accompanied yourself on piano.
Absolutely as Hoagy intended this song to be sung. You are simply the best! Bravissima bella!

Didn't notice the classical music tag... It's called interpretation and that's what keeps most of these standards fresh and alive.

Pianomays, that's just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I can hear the 'correct' melody on an Aebersold playalong CD. I prefer MUSIC. :-)
fiddlercrab3 2 years ago
Wrong--on an Aebersold playalong you can hear the correct ACCOMPANIMENT, not the melody.
