David Hartnell was the first and a very good doctor. However, all the doctors hae been good. You know it's funny how the Cyberman have changed over the decades. They're more armored now and look much better. Thanks for sharing.
@CatFish21sm No, this was the end of the third season. Episodes 1,2,3 still exist, but large parts of episode 4, which features the doctors first regeneration, are missing.
i think if i was watching this back in 66 i would have thought some hostile being had invaded the doctors body or something. i dont think i would have comprehended it at first
Poor Doctor... and I hope they keep searching for these lost episodes... they are out there somewhere. I heard a rumour on a Doctor Who DVD that they think that there are some in Robert Mugabe's private collection from when they sent them to South Africa to be broadcast there and that he took them and never gave them back. :-( if this is true then he's a dickhead. :D
did you know thats what happened with tomb of the cyberman?
it was lost for about 15 years (not 100% on exact years) ....
it turns out that the country i live in (Australia) had a copy. it was cencored from TV so they put it in a box and it just happens that they had found it and was nice enough to give it back to the bbc.
If i could go back in time i would go to the filming of Pat's era and get copies of all the tapes (as well as try to get zoe back here as well lol)
It's criminal that this episode, and many others are missing. The audience must have been very surprised at the time seeing this, it's a shame that we probably never will.
So, this is how it all started. If the First Doctor stays the only Doctor for long enough, the show is just closed with some huge, epic finale. But the early departure created the Regeneration's idea and put Doctor Who into an endless loop of AWESOME!
Back then, nobody knew Doctor Who would be on tv forever. I love this scene when William Hartnell transforms into Patrick Troughton. Troughton played the Doctor for 3 years. He left because he felt he was being typecast.
What bothers me is the Doctor knew nothing about the Daleks but he was TERRIFIED to death when he saw the planet Mondas and recongize them as the planet of the Cyberman.
Thanks for putting up this serial. Was great seeing Anneke Wills as Polly - I know her best as mother of Eighth Doctor companion, Charley Pollard. I love how Who keeps it in the family. It is so sad that Hartnell and Mighty Trout eras were so badly served by the BBC.
The first Doctor regenerated due to the fact that his old body wore out. The energy drain from Mondas didn't help matters either and seemed to exaust him even quicker. His body was in pre -regenerative state much like the 10th Doctor after he absorbed the radiation or the 3rd Doctor also absorbing the radiation in the cave of the spiders and forced him to make a hasty return to his ship just in time for the Tardis to aid him changing form. Sheer brillance if you ask me!
thankyou for posting I have never seen much of the first and second doctor who...poor bill hartnell lived until 1975 knowing that the bbc threw out his episodes in the trash forever! / @ milwaukee
@haydos271 i don't think so cause if it was the cause of the first doctor's regeneration the energy drain then it would effect ben polly and everyone else' right?
@JackOfBlades434 At the time the BBC got rid of alot of show tapes that contained these and many more awesome episodes. Most tapes were destroyed but a few have been found around the world. Some like this were lost forever.
wow, the first regeneration.. thank you so much for uploading this. My first doctor was nine and I knew nothing about regeneration then, so I was shocked (I reacted a lot like rose did) when all of a sudden he changed his face. That regeneration was very special to me. But watching this is fantastic. After ten regenerated (my fav doctor) I decided to watch all of the classic doctor who episodes, and I'm glad I did! Looking forward to the second doctor.
@StuartTheGamerNerd The Doctor met her twice again, as Peter Davison in 'The Five Doctors' and Paul McGann in the Audio 'An Earthly Child'. A line from Christopher Ecclestone in 'The Empty Child' implies that Susan perished with the rest of the Time Lords (except the Doctor and the Master) in the Time War.
so out of this whole classic series the BCC out of all episodes they just had to lose the one containing the Doctors regeneration cycle huh??..how strange..
@Allcanadian79 A few hundred were lost at first. The BBC wiped ALL of Hartnell & Troughton's episodes and a big chunk of Pertwee's. Then in the late 70's they figured out their mistake and started looking for copies. A lot were found overseas in the 70s and 80s. Then the well started going dry & unfortunately only 2 were found in the last decade. Right now there are 108 episodes from 27 different stories missing, and (bar maybe one or two turning up) it will probably stay that way for good.
I watched this as a child. The audience were not as naive or ignorant as some of you believe. The newspapers had been full of the imminent changover from Hartnell to Troughton. I was eight, and I didn't find it a mystery. The audience in 1966 was no more stuipd than audiences of today. I also recall that everyone I knew at school hated Troughton to begin with (because he was so different) but within a few weeks Hartnell was forgotten as we were swept up by the new episodes. Such are children.
I really hope the BBC can do a proper restoration/reconstruction job on this and other videos. Such a shame they decided to throw out/ destroy so much of the earlier footage.
thank you i can finally watch my favourite episode ever i no its my favourite because i have seen the new series and read or watched the classic seres
Nah, he says something about he "renewed." At the time it made it seem like he just got young again and it wasn't clear exactly what had happened. The whole regeneration concept isn't explained until way way later in the series.

What causes him to regenerate?
LoveTimeLord 1 year ago
@LoveTimeLord An energy drain from the planet Mondas weakened his already weak body and caused him to collapse.
