Most of these clips are from a Documentary called Stars and Watercarriers 1974 Director Jorgen Leth, it is probably the best Cycling film ever made. Centres of 1974 Giro D'Italia. I recomend everyone watches it at least 10 times in their lifetime it is quite beautiful.
sure they look beautiful, but only today I got stuck on a gear change half way up the hill on my Peugeot - stupid non-indexed gears - but then I'm sure I was the envy of all the other cyclists with their inelegant threadless stems.
Anyhow, they look pretty, but are a bitch on a gradient.
Hey!Very nice montage.I remember one time in a race, one had a explosione flatt. evrybody stopped cycling. We all thought it was himselfs who it happend to, very funny sound!
i loved it,i ride with a group of guys and all the bikes are downshift vntage ,did you notice the fit of the bikes to the riders, thay actually looked comfortable on them and enjoying it
As in when bikes were of genuine hand bult quality and performed better than they do today - didn't squeek, break down. When the gruppo was real gruppo of genuine lasting quality and quiet, not some pop out crap by a fishing tackle company that breaks down and makes more noise than a child's rattler............
so..how do you feel about sram then? I dispise it..came on my mountain bike got rid of it almost immdiantly...rode it on a rode bike in a parking lot and just got off the bike and said "no" lol.
Alot of respect for these guys. They had to change tires on the side of the road all by themselves. No support at all. They had to carry a pump and a tube.
Actually, this is just computer generated fake footage...
As any real au current trendoid cyclist knows a bike ain't bike unless it is ultra-light and super stiff uber carbon - with Shitmano, of course - and riders today should only compete in a few events because it's beyond impossible to compete the whole year in essentially all events. People like this guy Merckx, or a Anquetil, Coppi, Maertens, Hinault, LeMond, Argentin, etc. were simply myths.
You know what else? It appears that elite cycling was evry bit as exciting back then too, with plenty of speed, and classic style tactics, drama, and teamwork. Everybody had basically the same 24 lb steel bike, unless you were a big star with an early edition Ti bike (Like Luis Ocana)
Ah, cycling before creaking and groaning carbon fibre, Cirque du Soleil looking spandex kit and dopey helmets. When bikes were steel and men were men. Thanks for putting this together.
Aah, sounds of the best sport in the world! Thanks for sharing with us mate.

there is just something about a chain clicking through the gears that is soothing.

It's no wonder Fuente was so fast uphill. He pushed HUGE gears!

Nowdays pro riders just ride.

the best part of this video is when Merckx overtakes another rider with great conviction (intimidation?)

Word on that. I half suspect that if the UCI banned colored shorts, all of the drug and political problems would solve themselves.

@kohl57 But I bet you agree that Zipp-wheels are making some badass sounds too!
