Yes you can FEEL the heat its best to photograph with the wind to your back . active lava flows are over 1800 degrees ,

The air alone srounding an active flow front is 500 to 600 degrees like walking around inside your oven

rule is when you this close shoot fast then get to a cool spot to refresh and cool down before shooting more in the heat of the flow

On Mt Etna in Italy there is no restriction palced on hikers exploring the lava feilds but in hawaii you have to base what you do and where you go by the attuidie of the state and park personal

considering if he stood there for longer(and we're talking maybe a second) then the lava could of either A:gone straight into him or B:the heat would've gotten so high that his clothes just burst into flames

This video was taken on the costal plain in Hawaiii Volcanoes national park close to the Ocean edge the wind was to my back so i was able to lay on the ground and film as it poured out of the hole in the rock towards my head very cool

the current flow is on county property controlled viewing , up to you if you wish to beark the rules and visit pele up close after dark
