Hi, I'd be really, really eternally grateful if you could tell me which show this clip is from? What city/venue/year was it? Is there a DVD of it? It's for a paper, and I really need to source this info (which is massively helpful to me! Thank you!)
Your comment is well taken. But this colorful word doesn't carry its intended meaning everywhere. Jeremy substituted a neutral word for "niggerballs" during the London run of his show "Wait a Minim" more than 40 years ago. So there is precedence. In the US, where we recorded this APD, it would have been impossible for general audiences to properly hear the charm of the song if that red-herring phrase had popped out in every chorus. Alas this was not posted solely in South Africa. --RLB
please take this off as nigger balls was in the original song and it is not racial the same as golly wog is not as well but it is only offensive to the goody two shoes of the world
Ahhhh - the childhood memories... even my 13yr. old still loves singing it now in Australia... an SA classic - thanks Jeremy Taylor (I even saved the VW version used in the ad)!.
Voetsek means Go Away, lol I can do, it can mean several things depending on the expression you use saying it lol His intonation means FO. lol. I wish he sang the entire song though. :-)
Wow. That's what it's come to. Jeremy had to censor his own song. The candy wasn't called "Sugar Balls", they were called "Nigger Balls" and as a kid it or an adult it never crossed my mind that those lyrics were racist or even mildly racially insensitive. Anyone who knew anything about JT knew he was no fan of the Apartheid system.
@shiteetah "as a kid it or an adult it never crossed my mind that those lyrics were racist or even mildly racially insensitive." < I think that was part of the PROBLEM wasn't it?
@shiteetah - Bro - very well said !! here in the U.K, can't say this, can't say that - really p**sses me off - you call a spade a spade - whoops !! you can't even say that here these days because a spade used to refer to black people. Conversley though, you can still use the term "whitewash" - what hypsocisy !!
Not by any means.! There are several wonderful verses..This was one of my dad's all time favorite songs..If you want to here the song performed live in London buy "Wait A Minim" A GREAT REOCRD! Tim
Yes, i remember Spike singing a slightly different chorus ***-balls., thanks for the memories as i havent heard this since i hear once on radio a long time ago.
I've not heard this since my childhood in Kenya. Though as I remember it, the chorus didn't include "sugar balls"... but the original couldn't be sung now without offence!
Vootzsak! i love that word, i use it on my dad all the time! (yes, we are from south africa, and my dad does not where the pants in the house so it does not offend him in any way. i wrestle with him, so why should he be offended anyway?). (yes i am a girl)
(PS. I LOVE ESKIMO PIE!!!!!!!) (its an icecream with chocolate coating with no stick) :D
Wonderful! Haven't heard this for years and years. Just a pity he didn't sing the whole song - 'Ag pleez Deddy, won't you take us down to Durban, it's only seven hours in the Chevrolet ...' - can't remember the rest!).
I have just remade it for you, see the video response. Not the man himself but the best I could do. I met him in the 70s and told him how much I liked it in person. He's a great bloke.
We had this on a 7 single and the flip side was "Jo'burg Talking Blues"; his best ever!

I had the pleasure of seeing JT and Spike Milligan in 1974 at the Odeon in Aberdeen. This tune went down very well IIRC.
Happy days!
