I give it a 8 or a 9. the genius lies in the simplicity of the story. The premise very original. the progression rather natural. The suspense was prime. The actor was good. The overall creepiness/mystery of the series was well achieved, leaving one wanting another episode. Witohut a budget this is a great achievement. Specially compared to the shit of today. Not knowing what his situation really was, is precisely the point of the series.
The outcome of this episode is kind of positive, whereas the end of Serling's original story on which it is based really packs a frightening wallop. While they carry the guy away he feels something in his breast pocket. He reaches in and takes out . . . the ticket he bought before going inside the theatre. I can't imagine why this bit was left out. Maybe someone found it too grim.

I think....since he's in the military, he's having some sort of experiment run on him. They've given him drugs or hypnotized him or something to that effect, which is why he feels that since this is too surreal to be real, he thinks he's in a dream and going to wake up at any time. I think he's hypnotized because his actions seem to be controlled to a certain extent, his memory has been selectively erased, and he's being made walk thru a scenario that a hypnotist would likely come up with.
You have to remember this is from the 50's, so when you say "it wasn't really special" I hope you're thinking about that. A lot of what you see today are story lines BUILT on what people did before; Twilight Zone is the root of many of the astounding films we see.Don't expect you to realise, you're a young person, but if you do, then I'm impressed.
Great review and great episode. As you asked, I paused at 8:18. The plot builds suspense well (and thank you for cutting out the slow parts--you probably improved the overall viewing.) I have no idea how it will end. I was thinking: H-bomb? can't be. Dream? never heard of an amnesia dream. Hypnotism? doesn't make sense. I have no idea.

But what I especially liked was the point that Rod Serling was making, namely, that one huge obstacle to space exploration will be man's need to overcome the isolation and loneliness that space travel will bring about. Which is why he must never travel alone to the stars. People need people. We are social animals and will go insane without a companion.
so awesome that for 95% of this episode, it's one single actor and it works well. If you enjoy this episode you should seriously watch this episode on the definitive edition dvd box set. there's a commentary that earl holliman (the main character) did in 2004 that is amazing.

Whoa, I was COMPLETELY off lol. I had thought he had died, then he had to face his greatest fear, obviously isolation, in this dimension after death. And if he hadn't battled it he had to stay in this dimension for eternity, something like limbo. That ending was not predictable at all for me. But there's so many missing links that I thought my theory was too impossible. I rate this 8/10. Somewhat original but a very good way to start the series to show the style of TZ. Loved the review!:)

I haven't seen much of the Twilight Zone, but l loved what I did. For me the greatest strength of the series is it's understanding of human psychology at the edge, at the limit of what we can take. This episode starts off that theme with a bang, but it doesn't live up to what comes later, so I definitely agree with your rating. I loved your review and found your commentary to be astute and intriguing. And the length is great. For the record, when you paused I thought he was in a coma.

It's brilliant that you're doing this, I commend you. I think you gave it a fair rating.
