  • It doesn't hurt that Gillian's raw-boned look seems straight out of Walker Evan's photos taken in the South during the Great Depression. I don't think "affectation" applies in their music anymore, if it ever did. They've taken an existing style and expanded on it. I'm a helpless fan. They knock me out. Riley Stokes

  • White gold not white trash.....

  • People are constantly calling me Gillian pronounced with a hard G..... :( Someone even called me Gilligan. It was super embarrassing.

  • See it in the sky, written by and by,.... Sounds like God to me

  • Does the OP even know what "white trash" is? It refers to filthy style of living, nastiness, prejudice, extreme poverty, illiteracy and usually a lack of teeth. Rawlins is incredible, as is Gillian.

  • white trash lol shes got more talent than you will ever have

  • Fools! There is no such thing as white trash...

  • Gillian has more talent than most folks who yell and scream and think it's music!!! I had no idea she attended Berklee School of Music though----darn---I thought she was just mountain girl who made good with her music---dang sure talented for sure---and David can pick a mean guitar!!!

  • I suppose this is a great song. I sure would like to hear the words. Needs more volume on the microphone.

  • voir youtube ( tu repartiras a souffrir )

    merci

  • it makes me sad that the hacks on the radio get more recognition than folks like these two. damn, but they are amazing.

  • Thank God her mother decided to have her. What a beautiful song

  • She's got guts to give a Harp rack a go, it's not part of her usual motif.

  • They are two of the nicest, most talented people I have had the pleasure to meet in New York at a Paul Simon tribute concert.

  • Why is it that when someone embraces the root cultural music of this country they are viewed as uneducated or "hicks"? That is quite disturbing to me.

  • Same here in Norway... folk music is often looked upon as something boring and only a few actually embrace the old cultural stuff. But we have had a rennessance, much thanks to the Metal scene (wich often uses traditional folktales, myths in their lyrics, as well as melodies and instruments.) Traditional music has much interesting about it... but is often performed in a very boring way... but this generation is dusting off it ;)

  • @001Bigred Im the wizzard in Roswell , and I can explain, thier just ignorant cityfolk lol , . . . I love this culture of americana, its why we live, god , good music , what else is there?

  • @wizzard1956 hey, what's the real deal about those martians ya'll got hidden around there??? always like to hear talk shows and see tv programs about the Roswell Alien incident----ha!

  • @001Bigred I agree totally, . . if anyone has any doubts look this remarkable pair up on the yahoo search engine, thier highly educated in berklee, . . they have carefully calculated thier destiny , my comment your definately not unknown, here in Roswell NM

  • This one has touched me deep.

  • Her voice is very soothing.

  • Gillian playing banjo and harmonica together in this song was THE highlight of when I saw her gig in Nov 2004 at the Prince of Wales Hotel, St Kilda, Melbourne, Australia.

  • well, white trash is delicious I can't argue with that but you've got it wrong; this isn't white trash its blue grass.

  • Gillian is from a show biz family in LA and went to UC Santa Cruz. Both she and David went to Berklee School of Music. She is hardly "white trash", but rather a sophisticated officianado and interpreter of American roots music. Her hillbillyness is an affectation she has integrated into persona probably as an homage to that genre and from living in Nashville for some time.

  • thank you for explaining for those who don't understand...that was perfect and succinct...

  • @irelephant

A rather late entry into the fray here, but here it goes. Gillian Welch is an adopted child. She has experienced priviledge, but knowing how adopted kids think, never really felt fully accepted, but rather, apart.

Listen to the lyrics. She identifies with this song. She is always searching for her true voice, be that glam band or leftwing bluegrasser. Think before you dismiss.

  • guanaco's account is closed but his shit-headedness goes on...
