Safety is not the issue here its the amount of perfectly good food that is thrown away. Our bodies are covered by trillions of bacteria on a daily basis and i'm sure those shelf's in the store are just as bad as the dumpster.
Check out my youtube site. I am a product of the Great Depression of the 1930s. When I started dragging "treasures" home from a dump one street behind our home place Hitler's legions were deep in the thousand day siege of Stallingrad! As I look around and and see all these "baby boomers" that have never known any thing but the gluttonous prosperity since WWII running our economy I realize how they will need this experience of a "Great Depression" to get it right. It will come.
Your movie helped encourage me and my friends, regular dumpster divers for random things, to dive for food. After watching the doc' I forced as many as I could to watch it and talked it over with my closest friends. We decided to go scope out a dumpster but there was so much beautiful produce sitting right on top to be wasted we did a last minute unplanned dive. I'm actually currently eating breakfast as I type this that consists of food we took in that dive. I thank you so much for your film.
@MrPhillyGG remember most food recalls apply to food that is in the store for sale, not what is thrown away. People get food poisoning all the time...you essentially risk getting sick every time you eat.
just watched this with my GF, I encourage EVERYONE to watch this at least once!, It'll open your eyes on the world truly is. Also PLZ! inform friends, family or even strangers to view.
I congratulate and support Jeremy Seifert and all others who spotlight this horrific practice of wasting perfectly good food when so many are going hungry. The video spotlighted something I never knew about that could help this cause a lot. The Good Samaritan Act which basically absolves the stores of liability for giving the food away. I think that would open the door to more stores releasing this good food to those who are destitute.
I stumbled upon Dive! on Netflix and I was excited. Years ago I went on regular dumpster diving excursions with a friend. Our families ate like kings. THEN, the various stores started replacing dumpsters with enclosed crusher/compacters where no one could dive any more. That was/is so stupid! Anyway, for a short time, my friend with the golden tongue was able to convince a couple of store managers to give us the food before it was destroyed. That lasted only for a short time...
As part of a documentary project, I watched Dive! as my first documentary film on Netflix. I think Jeremy and the people behind the film are doing something great. Did a short write-up about it at doctrip.tumblr.com
I don't know why they don't give it to the homeless shelters around. Give the food to people who really need it, that don't have money in their pockets.
@TheChristChris I mean the stores that are throwing away all of the perfectly edible food; not the people taking it from the dumpsters. Why don't the stores organise something with the local community to help the people that really need it.
Seems like an interesting film. I notice many videos publicizing this which could lead to a problem. The companies might continue to waste food but lock the dumpsters in order to cover it up. This would mean more food is wasted and this source is not accesible to people who get a lot out of it. I think it would be great if all of this led to better environmental ethics, this is just something to take into consideration.
You get arrested for trying to live outside the system for that reason...the 'system' does'nt want you living outside it having an easy ride..it wants your as a debt slave dependent on it and using all your energy so it can feed off you. This is why a girl who stole from a dumpster in England was charged with theft. This is the truth of the world we live in folks. Peace
@keiththegreatest my friend who was homeless at the time dumpster dove found a perfectly good winter coat and was arrested for it. For getting something vital to his survival....thanks system you sure are awesome.
i think this is great, that people are highlighting this, but my feeling is that these stores will do one thing in response: get compactors. the good thing about compactors is they break, one dollar store i go to has one that breaks all the time, so they have a back up dumpster, which gets full because they don't have a schedule, then when it fills up they spread boxes of trash on the ground which makes it really easy for me to pick through
In the Minneapolis area, we have a few local stores ("Mikes discount foods") that sells the stuff that grocery stores would normally throw out. It is greatly discounted. They have a special license to do so. I always stop there before going to the regular grocery store and am continually amazed at the things I find and the benefit to my bottom line. I can walk in with a 20 dollar bill and walk out with two full bags of groceries, including meat and fresh produce.
I could actually make a living off of the items I "find" in the local dumpsters in my area. If you can name it...I have found it. I just placed out in front of my house 15 Keurig coffee makers, 12 Sodastream soda machines & a bunch of other items I found in the Bed, Bath & Beyond dumpster. I have given almost everything to friends & donated the others to Habit for Humanity. These stores get a huge tax write off for the stuff they don't sell & it's a shame that it ends up in their trash.
@steverid - BBB and other stores throw away HUGE AMOUNTS of stuff. HUGE. Many of these stores have compactors now so there is no way of seeing how much they waste. I give away most of the stuff I find as well. There are so many hungry and hurting people out there, it's actually mean spirited to throw this stuff out.
@goddess92627 You are exactly right, the local runs I make on a daily basis will fill my van. There is a Michael's Craft store next to the BBB & the guys that work there will spit their tobacco juice on everything before they dump it in their dumpster. Some places cut the cords to any electrical items & will also pour shampoo as well as spraypaint on everything :( It's esy to fix the stuff they cut. Acetone will take off ay paint as well. I LOVE your response to TIMMORRIS2010 obviously a douche
alcohol will kill surface bacteria too, i have heard of peroxide spray and vinegar spray being used...i use alcohol pads because the medical building i work in throws away tons of them, so i get them out of the trash
tractor supply cuts, slashes, and sprays everything as well...
so true. my mom and i once found two dumpsters filled with little bit kat bars when we were about to throw something out. there was absolutely nothing wrong with them, so we took them home. haha. the neighborhood had an early halloween.
Its so easy to blame the companies for this waste, but the fact is our system in the US is designed to make this waste more economical (bottom line-wise) than doing anything else. If we encourage companies to make more money throwing away than they would giving it away, what do we expect them to do?
Besides, as far as food goes, as soon as a grocery chain starts giving out food that is near or out of date, they get sued for millions because someone gets sick.
@RoxWeb no they won't, there has been a good samaritan law on the books for years, they will not get sued, people who take it assume the risk.
there is no profit in it, and they don't want to bother with things that don't make money.the landfill operations are taxpayer funded, so it is WRONG for them to shunt their problem, garbage, onto the backs of taxpayers

As for your comment Obiwan5832, they ARE doing it because they are simply too busy to donate... simple as that. Understaffed and underpaid and it's too much trouble... plus if they donate food, they might lose some sales to those same poor people! They do NOT do it for legal reasons. Google this to see for yourself " Emerson, Good Samaritan food donation act " Stores are protected under federal law unless they deliberately contaminate donated or dumpster food.
Don't make a stink to the stores ppl! DON"T! If you do they will all just install compactors! There are so few stores with accessable dumpsters as it is, please dont' add to their number!
Bottom line is this: It's just too much trouble for these stores to donate food. It's a lot faster and easier to just chuck it all in the dumpster... which is good for us gleaners!!!
Watched this on RT here in the UK yesterday. I already agreed with and practice everything preached in the film. But it serves as a great tool to teach others and I'm already telling friends to watch it.
More socialist propaganda yet again from commie hippy dirtbags who worship Mao Tse Tung & feel that America's free market enterprise system is evil. Give me a break,90% of America's homeless are there because they put themselves there. It's just Darwin's law going into effect, those that can't take care of themselves will die out,but instead we're supposed to support them...SCREW THAT!
@TIMMORRIS2010 - Well Tim, I'm no communist dirtbag, in fact I'm a libertarian. 90% of America's homeless because they put themselves out there? Really? How about the dismantling of our manufacturing base which shipped millions of jobs overseas plus the importation of cheap labor to unfairly compete with American workers. I'm a diver and I hurt no one. Your pious attitude is what is hurting us, not helping us. No one is asking for a handout, just a level playing field.
not only shipped them out but shipped them to mexico, closed them down there and shipped them out again to china, totally destroying their economy and contributing (alongside to america's lust for cocaine) to their country being taken over by drug gangs...
it kills me people would say someone was 'asking for a handout', no I am GETTING one, through my own labor, and the landfill this stuff goes to is paid for by TAXPAYERS...like me
Supermarkets are not doing this because they are wasteful. they do this for legal reasons. There are cases of homeless people getting sick from the food they where given and in turn they sued the company that gave them the food. You can't win. Sued for giving it away and condemned for throwing it away. I think buffet's are grosser though.
I worked at Bookstores and they throw away books!.. take the cover off and throw them in the dumpster.. while it is ILLEGAL to take these and resell them.. how many people can't read?... Our consumeristic throw away society HAS TO GO!!
Guys! The idea and the trailer is just right :) We've translated it into our native language and posted at the web-site of Informational Center on Climate Change 'ClimateInfo', Ukraine.
There is a failure to show how perishable foods recovered, helps african nationals eat: a claim as crazy and irrelevant as the claim by David de Rothschild (youtube) that 'turning off the tap' (nickelodeon - primarily non-african audience), saves water - for africa. Are these personalities expousing the same philosophies?
What world do you live in? Unions strengthen wages, benefits, and workers rights. The CEO's and the corrupt politicians ( Both Democrats and Republicans who are in bed with the corporations) make laws that attack unions and workers rights. I would suggest you read a few political books and legal writings before you make such distasteful comments about unions.
I've been a member of my fair share of unions, and in theory, they work well. But they create lazy employees. Political books and legal writings? Don't make me laugh. You make it sound like it's scientific fact that unions are superior. It's your opinion. My opinion differs.
Also, Trader Joe's is thriving in absence of a union. Their benefits put all other grocers to shame. How are they able to do this? Surely there must be some explanation that involves magic.
This is so upsetting. I don't understand why every industry/grocery store won't just suck up their pride and do the right freaking thing. Holy shit, man. Looking forward to seeing this film.

wouldn't trader joe's still be liable for the food they officially hand out? distributing food that is past its sell date could land the company in hot water.
That's crazy all the food they found is what I buy in the store, EXACTLY the same, cept they get it for free, where tihs at? lmao I needa do some diving.
@travistytube - I wouldn't be worried about companies or people watching this film. The ONLY people who would watch this would be freegans like myself. For a while these dumpsters may be locked, but the lazy retails employees eventually leave it unlocked. I guess it to our benefits that corporations and retail stores are run by stupid people.
@travistytube - Travis most people are way too good to dumpster dive.We have many princesses and wanna be famous who would never dirty themselves to do so.
Being resourceful and caring for the environment is no longer a " hippie " thing. It's a change thats inevitable no matter who you are or what you do. Constant growth on an ever depleting planet has implications that can not be solved with ignorance.
@CompellerFilms I actually had an idea of creating a local organization where I'd go to fruit markets and ask to give me any foods they'd throw away. The I'd take it to local shelters, soup kitchens, etc. I'm just trying to figure out how I can pay for any expenses (i.e. gas, etc). Just want to make sure I'm helping others as well as myself, I don't care to profit but with any idea there's are costs associated.
I am doing a grade 12 English Literary Non-fiction project about Canada's food waste from consumers, distributors and everyone along the chain. This opened up my eyes to the issue and now I am a more conscientous person. Your film is very creative! Keep up the good work :)
In a Resource Based Economy this will completely be eliminated. Check out thezeitgeistmovement and thevenusproject to participate in creating a better future for future generations.
this makes me sick to my stomach at the wastefulness of this society just saw this on Fox 11 also and i was like WHAT?????? let me research...this is crazy.....i need to dumpster dive lol i would never have the "balls" to do it but boy i wish i could...cudos to you all to be able to do this ...food is wayyy to expensive but we need it to survive so way to go finding a way to eat and deal with this wastefulness
We have the technology and the know how to provide all the necessities of life for all the worlds people several times over. The thing is, our current monetary paradigm gives no incentive to create an abundant world when scarcity is profitable.
Yeah, I recently scored a nice full set of golf clubs, and then gave my old partial set that was about 50 years older than those that somebody else discarded, to another dumpster. Not that I was ever that interested in golf, but next summer that might change.
This is both cool and weird but I have a practical question. Isn't meat that's been sitting out in a dumpster for hours at room temperature (or higher if it's hot out) going to be bad? Do people ever get sick from eating this way? Ideally the food should be DONATED instead of tossed in a disgusting dumpster!!! :/
the only reason the company dont give away the food cause jackass and greed people try to find a reason to sue a company cause one piece of hair was found on their salad
@thehexboy Actually in many places it is illegal to denature discarded food like that. And there's not great throngs of people out there willing to dumpster dive for food if they can afford to buy it wrapped, fresh, and not covered in dumpster slime
Beautiful. I hope DIVE! grows and becomes bigger and more well known, that politicians will see, understand and act to change this awful, failing system! *Thumbs up*
You can simply live off the spoils of a broken system, or you can attempt to effect change and seek justice. Secretively eating the waste while doing nothing to eradicate wastefulness cannot be the end goal. You're right. A film cannot, of itself, effect real change or transform society. That's up to us....all of us. And I hope that DIVE! continues to inspire people to act. Because of DIVE!, Trader Joe's is in conversation with Feeding America to donate all food....we hope they do.
i watched this not to long ago then our english teacher gave us a rhetorical analysis project on a chapter from a book called Travels with Lizbeth: three years on the road and on the streets. i thought you might like to know about it, if you don't all ready. it' s good and has a lot of helpful advice on dumpster diving. Mr. Eighner (the author) calls it "scavenging".
Dudes your really missing the real pay-dirt, have friends that work at distribution centers, wal-mart, k-marts, krugers, hole 18 wheelers of brand new everything dumped once a week, over inventory, they get tax credits, one load 50 inch plasma screen TVs But you need somebody that works there to alert you whats going, they put this into giant compactors.
@freepress666 That's way worse than wasting food. Notice all of this stuff happens thanks to government policies and interventions. Not likely to happen if it weren't for government regulations and interference in the markets.
@13darkjems I believe the rule is "never take more than you need".. because there should be some food left for whoever else is dumpster diving that bin after you're done.
Great trailer-- can't wait to see the film!! We've got a short chapter about dumpster diving in the YERT film, but you all have created the mother lode! Congrats! ~Mark from YERT
And not just food! I dumpster dive at an office supply store that tosses unsold, obsolete, or opened packages. Have made a bunch on eBay and at flea markets reselling found stuff. We live in such a wasteful society!
Send me the film Jeremy! The local wholesale produce center tosses 2 pallets of food every other day - that's an average of 4000 lbs a day. We have a buddy who's figuring out ways to get that food out to the people who need it. I passed on the trailer to him just now.
Excellent stuff ! Yes,it's criminal the amount of perfectly good food that's thrown away. The stores don't give a shit about anyone but themselves. What did the cops say to you ??
good doc'. i should go eat the rest of that pizza i just threw out.

Give me a break,90% of America's homeless are there because they put themselves there. It's just Darwin's law going into effect, those that can't take care of themselves will die out,but instead we're supposed to support them...SCREW THAT!
TIMMORRIS2010 5 months ago
@TIMMORRIS2010 - Well Tim, I'm no communist dirtbag, in fact I'm a libertarian. 90% of America's homeless because they put themselves out there? Really? How about the dismantling of our manufacturing base which shipped millions of jobs overseas plus the importation of cheap labor to unfairly compete with American workers. I'm a diver and I hurt no one. Your pious attitude is what is hurting us, not helping us. No one is asking for a handout, just a level playing field.
goddess92627 3 weeks ago
@goddess92627
not only shipped them out but shipped them to mexico, closed them down there and shipped them out again to china, totally destroying their economy and contributing (alongside to america's lust for cocaine) to their country being taken over by drug gangs...
it kills me people would say someone was 'asking for a handout', no I am GETTING one, through my own labor, and the landfill this stuff goes to is paid for by TAXPAYERS...like me
llel11 3 weeks ago
Supermarkets are not doing this because they are wasteful. they do this for legal reasons. There are cases of homeless people getting sick from the food they where given and in turn they sued the company that gave them the food. You can't win. Sued for giving it away and condemned for throwing it away. I think buffet's are grosser though.

Trader Joes should not only help the poor....BUT THE WORKERS SHOULD JOIN THE UNTTED FOOD AND COMMERCIAL WORKERS UNION!
HughieGphiladelphia 7 months ago
@HughieGphiladelphia
SO the TJ's workers can receive less benefits and pay? Screw unions. Working pretty well out in California, right?
santaliqueur 5 months ago
@santaliqueur
HughieGphiladelphia 4 months ago
@HughieGphiladelphia
Surely there must be some explanation that involves magic.

wouldn't trader joe's still be liable for the food they officially hand out? distributing food that is past its sell date could land the company in hot water.

I AM NOT DISRESPECTING YOUR FILM.
I actually like you film and all the editing and stuff.
I am just very disappointed on where you presented it though.
All I am saying is its a smart idea to post it somewhere else.
Dumpster diving does not need any more media attention then it gets.
Hell, Oprah damn near made dumpster diving illegal here in Chicago.
I say this because she is a media super power who bring awareness to it.
Now we have competition on the street's more locked dumpster to deal with.
travistytube 8 months ago 2
@travistytube - I wouldn't be worried about companies or people watching this film. The ONLY people who would watch this would be freegans like myself. For a while these dumpsters may be locked, but the lazy retails employees eventually leave it unlocked. I guess it to our benefits that corporations and retail stores are run by stupid people.
goddess92627 3 weeks ago
Hi This is Travisty from the Dumpster Diving Group "The Salvage Army".
Dumpster diving NEEDS TO BE KEPT UNDER THE RADER!
Were you planing on marketing this film or just make it for Youtube?
Thing is you are bringing an underground practice to the mainstream.
I DO have a film out and plan on selling it UNDERGROUND ONLY.
If a video like this remains in the public's eye enjoy your bleached food.
America has enough compactor's and store's don't need you your help to make the decision to get one.
travistytube 8 months ago

*Thumbs up*
IrinaWylder 1 year ago

Put me in touch with someone! That sounds insane!
CompellerFilms 1 year ago 7
@freepress666 That's way worse than wasting food. Notice all of this stuff happens thanks to government policies and interventions. Not likely to happen if it weren't for government regulations and interference in the markets.
MrDanielTynan 7 months ago
never take more than you need? but if its just going to wast why not take it and give it to someone?
13darkjems 1 year ago 4
If you watch the film, you'll hear the rest of that rule: Never take more than you need unless you find it a good home
CompellerFilms 1 year ago 13
@13darkjems I believe the rule is "never take more than you need".. because there should be some food left for whoever else is dumpster diving that bin after you're done.

Send me the film Jeremy! The local wholesale produce center tosses 2 pallets of food every other day - that's an average of 4000 lbs a day. We have a buddy who's figuring out ways to get that food out to the people who need it. I passed on the trailer to him just now.
