@Spriavana: I don't think it's right to use such strong words, if you dislike the rendition. I basically agree with you, the piece is sung far too merrily. But no need to react in such an offensive way.
This is absolutely disgusting. They totally missed the character of the song. It is a COMPLAINTIVE song, longing, indulging in memories. You might as well play Lord Lovat's Lament as a Reel. Awful.
By the way, Burns' last verse is missing in bareed235's posts below:
And now a widow I must mourn
The pleasures that will ne'er return;
No comfort but a hearty can,
When I think on John Highlandman.
An aging, desperately poor widow (Burns' description: "outspak a raucle carlin ... to wail her braw John Highlandman")drowning her misery in cheep booze with other beggars. Is that the impression you get from the above rendition?
the lyrics: (part 1) (which obviously i did the (copy/paste) thing, otherwise i won't understand a word LOL) A Highland lad my love was born, The Lowland laws he held in scorn; But he still was faithfu' to his clan, My gallant braw John Highlandman. Sing hey my braw John Highlandman! Sing ho my braw John Highlandman! There's no a lad in a' the lan', Was match for my John Highlandman. -to be continued-

although the Scottish accent is difficult to understand, but what the hell, i loved this song the moment i heard it,plus the woman has a lovely voice.
i read about it, and it seems it's a military song, but still not sure what is it about exactly.
i really like this song i prefer it with a piano like judi dench did in mrs. brown

By the way, the last verse is:
And now a widow I must mourn
The pleasures that weill ne'er return;
No comofrt but a hearty can,
When I think on John Highlandman.
And Burns' descrition of the character singing: "outspak a raucle carlin ... to wail her braw John Highlandman" - in a pub full of boozing beggars.

the lyrics: (part 4)
But oh! they catch'd him in the last,
And bound him in a dungeon fast,
But curse upon them, every one,
They've hanged my braw John Highlandman
Sing hey my braw John Highlandman!
Sing ho my braw John Highlandman!
There's no a lad in a' the lan',
Was match for my John Highlandman.

the lyrics: (part 3)
They banished him beyond the sea,
But ere the bud was on the tree,
Adown my cheeks the pearls ran,
Embracing my John Highlandman.
Sing hey my braw John Highlandman!
Sing ho my braw John Highlandman!
There's no a lad in a' the lan',
Was match for my John Highlandman.

the lyrics: (part 2)
Wi' his philabeg my love was born,
An' gude claymore down by his side;
The ladies' hearts he did trepan,
My gallant braw John Highlandman.
Sing hey my braw John Highlandman!
Sing ho my braw John Highlandman!
There's no a lad in a' the lan',
Was match for my John Highlandman.
