Declawing is wrong and pro-declaw people disgust me. It isn't like a nail you cut off, you're AMPUTATING your cat's feet. Aside from the fact that your cat won't even be able to do a simple thing like playing with its toys, it won't be able to defend itself if necessary. How about grooming your cat's claws or buying scratching posts? Or if you're that worried about your furniture and belongings getting ruined, DON'T GET A CAT.
@erikafromamerika Naw, just get claw covers (soft paws/soft claws)... you cut the nails, than have a plastic cap with nontoxic glue applied over. No harm done, and furniture is safe.
Many years ago, I too de clawed my cats, 2 of them. I later learned that it is un necessary & cruel. I made carpeted scratching posts that simply hang on a door knob. I put em all over the house, sprayed a bit of cat nip on them in the beginning. We also put larger scratching posts in a few rooms. My cats love them & have not touched any furniture. They get so much pleasure from them. At night I'll hear a door making noise & then the tell tale scratching. It's a nice sound.
Also, the belief that cats can't defend themselves without their front claws is total bullshit. The front claws are designed for climbing vertical surfaces. For defense, cat's don't need the front claws because just the act of swatting at an intruder is used as a scare tactic. Cats use their back claws more so than their front ones to cause phsyical damage when the swatting isn't enough to scare an intruder away. Ever wonder why cats grab toys and kick with their back feet? That's why.
If you're considering getting your cats declawed, use the laser treatment and do it before they're a year old. Two of my cats (including the one I have currently, 5 years later and COMPLETELY HEALTHY) had them done that way. They took the day to recover and sprung back to their normal selves the day after.
The problems arise when declawing cats as adults. Obviously a 4 year old cat is going to have more complications than a 4 month old cat. Adults put pressure on their feet during recovery.
no matter how it is done or what you call it it actually cuts off the first knuckle of the poor cat and subjects it to a lifetime of pain and misery. If you dont want cats to do what comes naturally dont bloody get one, or use softpaws which is a better option. These vets who perform this should be struck off, no animal lover would subject an animal to this misery, soon (hopefully) it will be banned in USA,
I just got a kitten hree days back. Since he's going to e indoors I was thinking about declawing my cat. But after seeing what they go through in surgery, I minus will just clip his nails every week! I've been doing that to my dogs and guinea pig, so why not the poor cat?
