sweetnes!! Lovin my epi head too. They track(record) really well. Gonna be postin more clips with my '63 sg soon. Keep rockin, and great tone by the way.
Actually it sounds as good as any marshall ive heard under 2500 bucks. Im suprised. in an age of crappy overpriced garbage someone made something good and chraged what its worth. i think the Epi might be the "tweed" of our time.
Okay, should I go for a older epiphone Les paul junior with the P-90 style pickup, and an epi valve head slaving my fender twin(cause natural tube OD on that would break my house, foget the windows.), Or new epi SG junior, with a aftermarket humbucker sized P-90 pickup to the same amp?
Does seem a bit odd, but then if the guitar has a solid wood construction, and you replace the pickups, it will sound just as good as any highend stuff, it probably just wont have the same playability. You dont need gold inlays/abalone or highly figured woods to get a good sound.
You're missing the point, its like you've just not taken note of what i've said. Loads of cheaper guitars use solid wood bodys and construction, yes the density of a perticular wood can vary, but its not like you are going to get a bad peice of wood. And its not like people will listen to a guitar recording and say, "yea thats mahogany" theres too many other factors, if you have good playing technique, and a good amp, little else matters.
Dude, if you made a gibson sg out of hard maple with a koa neck it would sound a hell of a lot different to a standard one.
And the cheaper the guitar the more likely you are to get a bad piece, which will sound like crap. You may well get a squire strat and it kicks the crap out of a regular one, but your 99% likely to get a shit piece of wood which sounds awful (like 99% of squire guitars).
And don't take me for some top end only guitar twat. Because...
1) I won't touch even go near a fender; they're over priced and all pretty crap now a days.
2) All I own are epiphone's, a few washburn acoustic's and a tokai silverstar japanese strat copy (which kicks the fucking crap out of a real strat...honestly, USA or otherwise this thing will take it to the cleaners).
what ur forgetting is theres alot of expensive guitars that use these standard woods, probably becasue they do a pretty good job. And the price of wood does not dictate its suitability for guitar construction. If alder is such a bad sounding peice of wood, why do prs use it on their guitars, they make the most expensive guitars you can buy.
Yes woods will sound different, but it doesn't make it better or worse, thats like saying humbuckers are better than single coils, they are different.
Eugh, your missing the point in a fantastically hypocritical manner.
Im not saying alder is a bad wood. I'm saying that if you made an SG out of it it'd sound VERY different to a regular mahogany one.
And no you are correct, price of wood has nothing to do with it's suitability to being used in the construction of a guitar. How fantastically irrelevant of you.
Hey, im really considering this head amp. just wondering what cabinet and pedals you think I should get?
On a budget of £250 (for the head amp and everything). I see lots of people with Boss DS-1s, but im not really a fan. I would really like a Marshall cabinet just 'cause of the name. Maybe need atleast
60W. I'm not too bothered about clean sounds, I just need to turn it from that bluesy crunch to a managable mainstream/punk distortion. Thanks, , Im using an Epi custom lp with Dimarzios
if you can only spend 250 then get the valve junior head and cab. Don't worry about fx (distortion, etc.) if you don't have an amp yet then thats the least of your worries...
I tried a lot of NOS tubes (I have many in stock) but in the end, the stock 12AX7 was the best balanced one; the EL84 has to be replaced though, but a modern JJ EL84 was the perfect match to my ears.
Change the Transformers with the Mercury Magnetics mod, plus choke and put the diet Coke away and grab a beer. Things will come in to focus tonaly and technically. Good job.
Beautiful. I assume it's going through the Marshall cab. It looks like a basket weave, so you're using greenbacks? That would add a ton to a head like this. I'm officially on the prowl for one now.
@realdocloco thank you very much for the answer!

hi! what do you think of this cab (2061cx)?
i read many poor reviews on the internet (or at least not completely satisfied, many change the speakers...)...
i'm looking for a cab that would match with an AD30 for some good classic rock / blues and i didn't like the orange 2x12...
thanks!
jacoktm 2 months ago
@jacoktm : it's a great cab and the stock Celestion G12H30 are fine speakers - but maybe too bright for some amps or people

Wow! awesome. really nice vintage equipment

What do you reckon to this - This Epi valve jr head with a Marshall MG 4x12 speaker cab - would it be good enough for live performances?

you should quit guitar, or practice 8 hours a day because you suck
unseenbadass 3 years ago
Damn I'm already practicing 25 hours a day, do you think it's hopeless so? Well, I think I'm gonna commit suicide ... or have a laugh.
realdocloco 3 years ago
25 hours a day? How do you do that! I can only do 24 hours a day at the most!

Wood quality is a massive part of a guitar's quality though. And so is workmanship.

A really good upgrade for the valve junior amp is to change the tubes to the old makes such as RCA, GE, Mullard & Telefunken.
Just do an ebay search for 12AX7 & EL84, bin those Sovteks and
put in some 'new old stock' and you'll hear an instant improvement.

noeltheshemale 4 years ago
No, the amp is on 7, but there's a little boost provided by a Marshall Guvnor (volume 8, gain 1).

Mainly, only one pickup (evil P90), and a wraparound bridge. Makes a lot of difference though.

If i paired that head up with a marshall 1960 cab could i get a jcm 800ish tone? (guns rose/Aerosmith/Vanhalen type tones)
arcanis494 4 years ago
Rather a plexi tone - you'll need an overdrive to get into JCM800 territory.
realdocloco 4 years ago
yea i have a gibson fad Doublecutaway with p-90s arent they great and im thinkin about getting the valve jr.
thebeast134 4 years ago
that marhall head under your epiphone head can youget distortion out off that head i mean kinda angus young sound
robrechtmathues 4 years ago
Natuurlijk! But you will have to play it loud (there's no master volume) - at full tilt, it's perfect ACDC tone with an SG.
