when i was a teenager i loved this painting on this album cover . does anyone know who painted it? I wanted and still would like to put it on the front of my bass drum thnx
@dopedealer12 Make a video of you smoking to this song just so all the propaganda about pot smokers being dumb and tasteless can get thrown in the garbage.
Looks like the cover of the album, i bought in the 60s. I took it with me in tour of Viet-Nam 1967-68. Great to listen and dream of San Fransico.............
I suggest my self-medical prescription: "so what" and "strange meadowlark" twice a week at least. No side effects after decades of assumption. thanks for posting.
best song ever from the brubeck quartet hands down. amazing composition. however, brubecks piano solo later in the song was a bit disappointing. overall one of the best pieces ive ever heard.
What I love about jazz is that it seems like most who listen to it are not only a listener but a music aficionado! I've yet to meet someone in real life who actually listens to jazz so it is nice to come here and see comments about how Desmond's entrance at 2:11 is so well accompanied by Wright's bass. Too many people inadvertently listen to music these days and miss out on the beauty of the composition. I'm not complaining but rather just praising jazz and the people who listen to it.
Like many others, I bought this album because of Take Five and Blue Rondo. When I heard this song, I was blown away and it still has a great effect on me every time I listen to it. This is on my short list of all time favorite songs of any genre.
i actually want this album not because of take five, but for blue rondo or this. In fact, I first wanted it after hearing about how good it was from a bbc documentry. how glad i am i watched it - this is amazing!
This has always been my favorite song by the Dave Brubeck Quartet and one of my favorite jazz songs ever. I bought this album because of Take Five, but after I heard this song for the first time it became my favorite from the entire album
same heer I bought the cd just for take five this song became my favorite. To relax I pack my pipe with some good baccy get in my truck and drive around listening to time out.
When I was 14, my father bought me this CD for Christmas. At the time I was mostly listening to Kurt Cobain, as teenagers were at the time. My father had always been playing jazz around the house - he played the trumpet himself - but the music never really spoke to me, as it was something belonging to him and not something of my own. That Christmas, when I had my first own jazz record, that is when I found out who I am.
Desmond's appearance at 2:11 IS dramatic (it's an alto sax, not a tenor), but credit Gene Wright's simultaneous entry on bass for setting the table. Without Gene, this piece would sound very thin indeed.
@clapady i agree, but it is also very smooth, which shows the talent of the musicians and their ability to work together and blend. absolutely amazing
@clapady oh do they ever, set the table with soft heat, they knew that part was dramatic, that it had to be handled right for the transition between instruments
Back in 1966 a violin major at Oberlin tried to explain complex time to a 16 year old 4/4 Beatle-brain. He reached into to the department store record browser, bought this album, handed it to me, told me to keep it and to study track 3 - "Take Five." I started the album on "Rondo" and then came track 2. Mercy. After that second glistening arpeggio I was hooked. Strange Meadow Lark - in the opinion of THIS strange meadowlark - is Bru's most beautiful composition. It's "timeless!" Thanks, David!
this reminds me of christmas

Nice but a small complaint..There are a couple of notes in the upper register that are badly out of tune.

Is this 4/4 time? I'm just asking, this one's timing isn't as obvious as, say, take five.
firemario876 5 months ago
@firemario876
the piano intro is so freely played, it IS hard to tell, but once you get to the sax you can tell it is in 2 (2/4)--that's how i hear it anyway.

Please don't call this a "song." It is a "piece," or "composition." A song is something that is SUNG.
Thanks.
