I have the complete BBC programme where this clip has come from. Very very rare...Lynn and Susan Murphy are great people also. I was privileged to meet them some years ago.
Very sad the shape its in. I realize the people of Martha's Vineyard did not like hollywood taking over their island, but i just dont understand why they would not want to preserve a piece of movie history. The only 'Jaws' related thing i saw when i went there, besides the buildings, was a wooden 'movie poster' plaque in a coffee house in Edgartown.
@jt8131 I visited that beach and noticed the same. Best I can guess is the paint used was not the highest quality since it only needed to stick a few months. That top paint sluffed off over time and exposed the primer coat. I can assure you though, ORCA2 (or what little is eft of it) is the real deal.
R.I.P. Orca....you'll never be replaced...This should have been in the smithsonian. They'd make a fortune if they took care of it and used it as a tourist attraction...what a wast.
I walked the spot shown on the video this week. There is very little of ORCA II remaining. Some rusted metal framing, pneumatic hose and a bit of fiberglass hull is all that's left.
My son and I dug up a bit of the buried hull. I was able to recover a painted 12" square section that we took with us. Thinking about framing it with a description. Might look good in the home theater room along with a picture of ORCA II from the movie.
@pcniantic so sad that it was left to rot in the sun.
I found this footage rather upsetting, and quite baffling, as i'd have guessed after the sucess of the film, Universal would have gone back and claim what was left, for future investments, and the fact that they also allowed the sharks to waste away in a studio backlot is something else that leaves me dumbfounded.
Such a shame and real disrespect to the makers and craftsmen of the film who worked hard to produce the Orca and the sharks.
i have been a fan of JAWS since the day it was relwased,,it terrifieied me,,i love the movie, and to think there are bits of history lying on a beach on the vineyard ia terrible...i would give my arms for a piece of it to add to my memrobellia.but i don t think i could afford a trip there any time soon,,lol peace to all
I visited these remains this past monday. We had so many winter storms this past winter that it looks nothing like this video. Infact... you almost need a detective to find which pieces belonged to Orca. People have dumped all sorts of boats there over the past 35 years. Its a shame. The same people who clame the love the Vinyard just dump their garbage here. Oh well. I grabbed a piece of Orca for myself!
i live in massachusetts and go to cape cod every summer. i saw jaws this winter and at first i was scared to go to cape cod until the end of the movie when they killed it
@flamingcartman312 The Orca 1 used to be in the pond at Universal Studios Jaws ride in LA for a while. In the mid-late 80's it was destroyed when they tried to lift it out of the water and the thing broke apart. This was a horrible mistake on Universal's part. The Orca was a piece of movie history and should have been preserved, not left to decay. Still kills me when I think about this.
Having worked on the movie I can assure you none of the mock ups or breakaways were ever designed to last. They barely made it to the shooting sets. The sharks were deteriorating from day one and had to be epoxied back together almost daily. The movie ran over budget and time three times. They were in the business of getting it on film not making permanent movie history. I cringe even now remembering the stress and petty Hollywod politics!
My feelings exactly palindrome! I thought Universal studios would be more responsible and clean up after themselves!!1 Why is it all washed ashore???!!!
Ben gardners boat was scrapped years ago :-( devastating!!
And the Original Orca was sat in the backlot at Universal Hollywood as part of the jaws experience but when they brought in a big crane to lift it out of the water hole so they could empty the water and re-do the jaws ride the Orca snapped in two because the wood had rotted and was then scrapped! i was devasted to learn this, why didnt someone take it and have it in their garden or something?!
Visited it the other day and wow, i felt very emotional walking up to it, thinking that it is the exact ship they sank in the movie.
I too took a few pieces of the wood from it :-) Seem's very wierd to me that they leave it as a wreck, dont observe jaws on the island (Although apparantly they are proud it was filmed there) and sell no merchandise, i was really hoping for a "Amity Island" t-shirt but no, it's very odd.
They do a Jaws week in Martha Vineyard deadman but no, they don't pay the homage to it that they should on a daily basis and most of the merchandise that comes in for the festival is crap from China with no reference to the location, just the movie.
I actually saved a few pieces of the Orca. Strips of fiber-glass from the bow, painted a dull maroon color. Maybe I could sell them on Ebay some day! :)
This is neat! I visited that area with some brothers back in '96 and got to climb on the sinkable Orca! (I don't remember if this is the guy who took us over on his little mini-ferry) This is in a small village called "Menemsha" in the town of Chilmark and is very near where they filmed the Orca heading out to sea (Quint's cabin full of shark jaws) In fact, the exact location can be seen in the movie, while the Orca is passing all the other boats. Way in the background across from an inlet.
Its sad to see all of that - especially whats left of the Orca. To think what a huge impact this film made on our society/culture and to see it all abandoned and in ruins, to realize Shaw is gone that none of this will ever be used again...I dunno...it was just an overwhelmingly sad piece to me...
Let me ask you something. HOW THE HECK DID YOU GET THIS?!?!?!?!? I MIGHT BE THE BIGGEST JAWS FAN AND I HAVE SEEN ABOUT EVERY BEHIND THE SCENES VIDEO THERE WAS ABOUT THIS MOVIE BUT HAVEN'T SEEN THIS UNTIL NOW! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW RARE THIS IS?
Vidcat, do you know if the Orca 1 and 2 were both sets built from scratch for the film? Or were they real fishing boats that were purchased used? If purchased does anyone know what brand and year they were? Thanks, Bill
What kind of boat is the Orca?
