I love this book and I think the issue of this film adaptation is the score, its overpowering every scene, I wish I could tone down the music, its distracting. I know that is part of creating the gothic aura of the book but nothing in Jane Austen's writing requires such intensity.
I saw the 2007 version last night; I like the story but its not my fav. Catherine Morland is almost exactly like how I am/was. Anne Shirley/Blythe; the same. I say I more like Anne than Catherine; because of what Catherine read; I was more into Fantasy/Sci-Fi. I love her hairdo more in this one. WHAT a mole on that ladies face!! I prefer the NEW Mr. Tilney as far as looks!!
@hammertapping .. i never said the book was ridiculous... I mean by implication that THIS version; this movie adaptation is ridiculous. the book itself is a lovely book and contains my favourite of all of Jane Austens characters. However I beleive this movie adaption is a poor representation of Janes Austens wonderful book that is Northanger Abbey....

I guess you cannot understand sarcasm, wit, and imposed meaning.
if you don't get that book satirizes trashy gothic romance novels through a ridiculous plot and characters, you are one one who is not understanding it.
no adaptation can make it ridiculous bc it already is ridiculous , intentionally .
Though my evil angel Nietzsche will haunt me for confessing it: But I cannot help and like the books of Jane Austen and of course the well made movies based upon them; and this one is quite good: The solemn music and the continual change between dreams/fantasies and reality, the fancy costumes and the fitting scenery make this movie very entertaining; and the story of a young girl being charmed by romantic novels appeal to me, though not in person as I indulge much more in the ancient wars.

I love Jane Austen's work. The movie is Awesome, compared to most movie based on a Book. Acting is Outstanding!
