Doki Doki Panic Review aka Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan-Famicom Disc System

What trips me out is how Nintendo has since used the Doki Doki Panic music from Level 1 as an official Mario song ever since...even though this version of SMB 2 was not originally released in Japan.

My cousin's uncle owned a video store when I was a kid, he had a lot of NES games! I remember he had a bunch of famicom games with converters. Back then we didn't know that they where Japanese games. He gave all the games to my cousin when he sold his store in the early 90's. My cousin wasn't much of a gamer, so he gave me most of the games. I actually have the REAL Mario 2, and I remember back then being like what the fuck is this hard ass Mario game! 31 in1 was cool too!

funny thing is that the Japanese versions of games are supposed to be easier then the American versions because in Japan it was illegal to rent games so (idk if its still that way) idk what they were thinking with SMB2 being 2 hard for americans. Even tho i still prefer the doki doki mario over the real SMB2.

I'm glad we got our American version. It was a terrific game. I think more of the same, or from the first one, would have bored us or put us off. We are fickle consumers. I think this is what they were worried about.

The original Mario Bros 2. (Japan version)... Was no where near as hard as they made it sound. ..Yes, Super Mario Bros. 2 was harder than the first, but..in my opinion, the first one was way too easy. I'd rather have a game that actually takes effort to beat, than a game you can beat in 10 minutes.

@Gamester81 Gamester you made a mistake, the blue lady character is luigi because she can jump high. The pink princess is peach because she can float for awhile and it's kind of funny since they're both pink!

@SuperMarioAidan Doki Doki Panic is a game made only in japan. The game was later modified to add Mario characters, and released in america as Super Mario Bros. 2. Thus Doki Doki Panic was first(and they're both essentially the same game)... Shy Guys/Siffets/birdo/etc, were not original mario characters, but characters for the game Doki Doki Panic.

another awesome review as per usual...I had never noticed the different jingle in the heart rooms/secret door etc...for obvious reasons it wasn't the mario tune like in the US release as Mario Bros 2.

It was Nintendo of America, specifically the president at the time Howard Lincoln, that decided it was too difficult for us, as well as not being innovative enough compared to the first. Such a shame. Though, I really don't mind the localization of Doki Doki Panic. It introduced many staple characters and elements to the Mario series.

To be honest I prefer the Super Mario version to the Doki Doki version. Cause to be honest if it wasn't for this game being released we wouldn't have shy guy and birdo in other mario games so thank you Nintendo of America. Plus the music and gameplay rocks !!!

Thank you for the vid I've not seen that game for some time. I used to have a Famicom Disc but I sold it about 10 years ago on ebay. I never should have gotten rid of that.

They have this game for the gameboy sp and I think gameboy advance...Anyway, the cardridge title is called super mario advance. But the cardridge has 2 games. The first one is Super Mario Bros 2 and the other one is called Mario Brothers. I like this game even though I can't get pass the third level in the FIRST world! he he.

In Japan, Super Mario Bros 2 (know to us as "lost levels") was a direct sequel of the original SMB. They thought it was to difficult for Americans, so they just replaced the characters from a game called Doki Doki Panic, and released it in the US as SMB2 (know to them as SMB USA)

The game your talking about is just the GBA re-relase to the USA version of SMB 2. Nintendo released all of the original SMB games for GBA.
