Is it true that Madame Caballe was still sick with salmonella poisoning when she did this performance? It's an incredible feat to know if she went on and then did that incredibly rare (for her) High D. I know she was booed (unjustly, I might add) during this performance, so it sounds as if she did it just to spite them for booing and whistling. In any case, brava a la diva!
I am not an expert, but keep going from one to the other of the great singers doing this piece, and The Caballe did something in here, that is just magic.
The critics and the papers lean heavily on her all during that week, and she was really pissed. Then she went ,that nigth, and produced her best performance ever ,risking everything. The thaeatter come down.
What a great story! I think this is possibly one of the best moments in all of opera. It's just so gorgeous, and incredible! In this recording, you can almost see the snarl on her face as she cuts off that D. Callas' recording of this, of course, is equally stunning. You can just hear the stress building up until she practically screams out the last note. And Sutherland's concert version: Wow! She pretty much obliterates all of her oponents with that one single note that completely silences all.
She brought down the house! The likes of Caballe, Sutherland and Sills- the 3 reigning bel canto sopranos of the 60's and 70's we'll never see again. Caballe always had an exciting voice in bel canto

I think, but you can disagree with me, that Callas keeps up the total line more powerfully. Caballé, as Callas did, portrays the shock, the protest and then suddenly the strange acceptation wonderfully, but the second giudici is a bit overdone for a queen, Callas keeps ik just somewhat less expressive, but more implosive, more in accordance with Bolena´s character and this makes her acceptance of her fate more likely afterwards
nonsense, Callas wished. There were better bel canto singers: Sutherland, Caballe, Sills, Gencer. Callas was a great Tosca and Butterfly, but so was Tebaldi.
Speaking of D´s, don´t forget her Arena di Verona Don Carlo;or her Pirata(EMI),sang with her wonderful husband Bernabé Martí, (who has stunning high notes & a most moving voice, w a touch of nostalgia, truly special);or at the live recording w Maggio Musicale Fiorentino(1967), etc, etc. She is a true force of nature, w a career unparalleled by any other singer in the whole history of music, (as the Dir. of the Viena Staats Oper says in the docufilm about her life, "Caballé Beyond Music").
No. Simply the best ever. By the way this is a high D and as far as I know Is the highest note ever recorded on Caballè singing. The second best Is the the D flat in the Mina's scene from Aroldo in Verdis' Rarities recorded at the very beginning of her career.
Caballe also interpolated high D flats in live performances of Lucrezia Borgia and Trovatore. Also in her recording of the aria from the zarzuela El Rey que Rabió by Chapí.
Lovely!!!

@gustopheles Indeed, isn't in the score
Onegin65 4 months ago
@Onegin65 Strange, I've never heard a version in which it was omitted. I'm glad Caballe took it - I had no idea she could do that live.

Bel Canto artists were always at conflict between the beauty of the line and the clarity of their phrasing and intonation.
Caballe doesn't always achieve a perfect balance, but her purity of tone is unmatched. Dramatic and effortlessly stunning.

Impressive D. But I wish she wouldn't leave out half the consonants.

Caballe was bothered by the Milanese until the unspeakable thing; I send a high D, to make that it was not question of high notes, clear she was ill

Also, Callas breath initially is shorter, when she says giudici ad Anna, this conveys more the shock and pride.

callas is more compact in vocal line, psychological more unified, without losing the expressive diversity.
