@PhillyDeane if you are really interested in learning about alchemy, i strongly recommend to read the books written by Samael Aun Weor. In these books you will discover the secret of the Alchemists, and the most imporant thing is that you will have the chance to become an Alchemist if you put into practice what you read. A book you can start with is Revolutionary psychology which is key to make the first steps in this science.
