Many things...besides range the main indicators of a voice type are its color, weight and tessitura. Range can be deceptive as the greatest voices usually can develop a wide range, such as Malena's...but the color of her voice is rich like contralto, and her tessitura is more mezzo-soprano, though she can sing high sometimes like a real soprano.
thanks for introducing me to this AMAZING artist! I am obsessed with her now! the first sfogato I hear singing Una Voce Poco Fa (in the original key) and the Der Holle Rache! it is incredible to think that it is the same voice! Plus, she can sing pop and sound good, gotta love that fusion and versatility! :)
thankyou for introducing me to this fantastic diva. contralto, coloratura soprano AND pop music and singing them all well? being the opera snob that I am, I never thought it was possible.
PS: the met should fire whoever they have lined up as their next Norma and cast her =P
I'm a little strapped for cash, but what I've heard of her on youtube is amazing (I listend to Tragedy like 10 times in a row, God I love that deep, sinister mezzo chest voice)
"Tragedy" is fabulous. During the coloratura in the bridge she goes up to high C, and in the low refrain of the chorus she goes down to low C, covering 3 octaves in a song.
She also covers 3 octaves in "La voix", doing a scale from D3 to G5 at the end of the bridge and then during the third chorus sings coloratura up to D6.
What a versatile singer! She hits the G3 & A3 in Non piu di fiori in such a dark and chesty manner, turns around and whips out some Rossini coloratura, and then does a perfectly placed Eb6 in the Doll Song!
how do you determine if someone mezo alto or soprano? same for men... besides range

it's not just the range that is amazing, is the ridiculous range of tessitura and vocal color (queen of the night down to deep contralto? ...wow)

Her album "La voix du Nord" is really good, if you like Sarah Brightman's more pop stuff, you would love it
Disc 1 is pop and Disc 2 is all (real) opera

I recommend her double CD album "la voix du nord" and her most recent opera album "opera di fiori".
Malena is a fabulous singer, she keeps a musical beauty across her whole 3+ octave range and has flexibility and versatility.

Yap she might be an assoluta indeed! She is clearly a mezzo soprano, but can sing in every register, she is amazing!

Wow I love that lower register!

She sings all these Rossini contralto roles and then turns around and sings the queen of the night :p

@primohomme The D3 to G5 scale, where's that from?
BZBlaner 4 months ago
@BZBlaner
it's from her song "La voix" in which she mixes pop-dance and opera :) and uses a 3 octave range (D3-D6)

I adore that high B at 2:47, and her staccati are just too much.
