Anyone who would ever say anything nasty about Gracie obviously knows nothing about her during world war two Gracie raised millions of pounds for the war effort it was the press at the time that told lies about her but the British public loved her.
I agree... Jane Horrocks voice not as good, but, she did play her with humour and sensitivity, thus raising awareness of Gracie, (like listening to these real recordings). My nan loved (Our Gracie), but other people around me at that time planted negative views on her, me being too young to know the real truth about what she gave and donated for the war effort. Just read up a lot about her and was so sorry for my negative feelings about her all these years.
Thanks for putting this clip up - considering the age of the film and the equipment they had in those day's you can hear everyword !!!!! beats all the digital rubbish of today.
If ever a part had to be portrayed of Gracie Fields - why oh why, didn't they get Barbara Dickson to do it - she would have been superb.
@sleaponit21I think whoever decided that Jane Horrocks should have sang on this drama should have slept on it:-} ~Gracie wouldn't have been best pleased to see the programme on the BBC. She was a wonderful, warm and funny lady who did her best in the most difficult times of Britain. RIP Gracie.
Just watched jane Horrocks playing Gracie, sorry, her voice was terrible and they should have dubbed it. Young people would not understand why war time folk loved her with this portrayal.
I watched 'Gracie!', yes, Jane Horrocks' voice was not as good. Jane did say in an interview that there was no way that she could reach the notes that Gracie did! I think that the portrayal was very sensitive though. Although a little artistic licence was taken here and there, it was a very nice programme.
What I like about this is that it so British. Not imitation American. Gracie isn´t glamorous. She is a comedy actress. But she has a such a fine, powerful voice!
Our Gracie at her best, she captured the hearts of many by just being herself, a rare thing these days. and will always be remembered by many across the age range GO gracie GO. thanks for posting.
It's wonderful to see the recording of this song again. I remember first seeing this in 1989 and think Gracie sings with such simplicity and emotion. Gracie was a true star, and I think few people now realise just how much hugely popular she was.
Smoojah, thank you so much for posting this clip, it simply ammazes me how anyone could say anything nasty about Gracie she was such a down to earth lady and a true star
Thanks for your kind comments, I have had to remove a few very nasty ones and block some users. It is very nice to find that most people appreciate the film clips that I have posted.
Isn't the nastiness you stumble accross on here sad.We all have opinions and i dont like the majority of modern stuff, but would never leave a cruel comment. She brought cheer to millions in the depression and was a good kind lady.

I've treasured her Rex record of this song since I was a little boy. My first copy got broken, but I was lucky to find another in a junk shop!

A very over rated lady

You have to be of a certain age to appreciate the person, you are a bit too young to understand the affection in which Gracie is held.
smoojah 4 years ago
Well, I don't think you have to be a certain age - I'm eighteen and I simply adore Gracie.
